Thom Shenk is the reason I am standing today. I've had chronic back pain for years and tried everything: massage, chiropractors, heat pads, etc which only ever gave me temporary relief.
Then I heard about rolfing.
I went for a session or two in 2014 or 2015 to try it out, but I was poor and had a tough time continuing the sessions (they are a little pricey). But last year I was at the end of my rope with the pain in my mid-back, and I would do whatever it took to get some relief.
I starting seeing Thom on a regular basis. He was friendly and knowledgeable. His studio is inside "Restore Motion" on the third floor. He has weekend appointments! The parking is also free on the weekend. If you're female you should bring a sports bra and a pair of cotton / bike shorts to the appointment.
Rolfing seems like both an art and a science. Thom's attitude is really well-suited to this profession. I don't think it's horribly painful during the session, but my back has been in a lot of pain for years and years. YMMV.
I've had at least 15 sessions. Sometimes I would feel amazing afterwards, and sometimes I left in pain. Your body is working through the muscle changes, so don't feel discouraged. Working with Thom and going through this process has been a total life-changer. I have been pain-free for months, although it took some time to get here.
As a side note, I did have a week or two where I experienced extreme pain after my session. I wondered if the rolfing was working. This was probably around week 6 or 7. But after that week, something released in me, and THAT's when my pain started to disappear. So stay with it if you can.
I'm thankful to have found this place. Thom seems to book up kind of quickly and scheduling can be iffy, so try to book in advance. Weekend appointments are always the toughest to get. Thom is not a texter or emailer so calling seems to be the best way to go.
I would highly recommend. read more
