So it's kind of a dump, but not terrible and I booked it for $30 on Hotwire. For that price, it's fine, maybe even deserves an extra star. But if you pay more than $30 deduct a star. Then slap yourself in the face for not using Hotwire. read more

The room was in poor condition with dirty walls and floors clearly present. Probably the worst shower I've ever experienced with a small weak stream of water exiting the shower head. The head is simply poorly constructed & ancient. Frankly, I would have happily paid 35. more to stay up the street if I had any idea how bad this place would be. The breakfast was ok and the bed was ok even though it was older and on the hard side. There is no way I'd ever visit this place again. The product is the brainchild of an obvious skinflint who with their short sightedness has created a wholly cheap motel with a poor future ahead.

Scrapes and scratches all over the walls, ceilings and furniture, with an overall tacky look. I will rave about the bed though, it was VERY comfortable and one of the few good things about this place. In our bathroom, we were missing a shower knob, therefore we could not take showers..once we left the room for a bit and came back, there was a wrench on where the shower knob should have been, so we could just turn the shower on with the wrench??? lol. The funny thing was that we had not even told them about this issue yet, it was as if they has already knew and were a little too late on fixing it. I felt pretty unsafe here. There were a lot of sketchy characters hanging around the outside and I refused to walk around at night. The staff that we encountered were a bit odd as well. While we were in our room, a lady knocked on our door to give us some new towels. She was very sweet, but I had a hard time figuring out that she was an employee since she showed up at our door in a tank top, jeans and flip flops. This hotel seems to be a big destination for hikers since the Appalachian Trail is right outside from here, which then I could understand that this place would be a good fit. While it is a bit far away from Salem/Roanoke (where the rest of our party was staying) the savings were worth the extra 10 minutes on I-81. It is located right off of the interstate but far enough away that we hadn't heard any of the traffic coming from the highway. We arrived in town around noon to find the front desk clerk unfortunately having to turn away someone who had not made a reservation because the hotel was completely full. (Guess it isn't too far from Tech for some folks, after all!) We couldn't check in until 3PM, but by that time we would be at the game and wouldn't be back until late that night. I was apprehensive but everything worked out well: we came back close to midnight and there was still a perky front desk clerk there who processed our reservation in no time. The hallways seemed nice but nothing spectacular, a typical chain motel off of the highway. But the rooms themselves were gorgeous: clean, ordered, and homey, our room on the second floor had wooden beams running along the ceiling and attractive, modern furniture/bed dressings, definitely feeling more upscale than you expect from a Super 8. The bathroom was clean and inviting, with complimentary toiletries, and while we didn't use them, there was a fully stocked coffee maker and an iron in the room as well. There was an unexpected amount of comfort and style at this hotel, especially for being one of the "lower" national hotel chains. It's more than perfect for the Hokies fan booking a room in a pinch.

Upon arrival the building does NOT look like the photos as they are currently under construction. I was told the room we booked was not even available and was given a queen room. After 2 room switches we were given an accessible king room. Got into the room and was a bit wary due to the smell. The window appeared to be missing drapes to darken the room completely. We began to unpack and I pulled out my baby's food to heat it for him and as I went to grab his bib my husband saw a cockroach. We immediately knew we could not stay as my toddler was going to be sleeping on a blow up toddler mattress on the floor. We spoke with the attendant at the front and they were unaware of the cockroaches. We let them know we were packing back up and finding a new hotel. My daughter needed to potty and we saw the water was brown, definitely not from rust either. The water from the faucet was also brown so we used the hand sanitizer I brought. Upon leaving the bathroom we saw a second cockroach (my husband got a photo of it when he tried to get a picture of the toilet water). Comfort Inn down the road is where the person at the front desk recommended and it is MUCH better and FREE FROM cockroaches. We are currently mid complaint process via the BBB. I've shared the photo we have with them and am now sharing it here.

This Quality Inn was in the middle of renovations, but the work did not disturb me personally. It also allowed me to choose an end room with an adjacent room closed for upgrades. The room I stayed in was completed. The shower and bathroom upgrades were fabulous. My only issue would be with the new style mirror lighting provided. It could have been slightly brighter. The room furniture was only average as well. The seating provided in the room wasn't the most comfortable. Otherwise, the room was spotless clean and roomy. The staff was likewise efficient and courteous. Adora checked me in punctually and allowed me to select my preferred location in the motel. She was extremely informative and charming. The breakfast facility was spacious. The food was magnificent, and the lobby, like the room, was exceptionally clean. When combined with the Quality Inn cost-per-night, this motel is an excellent choice for value. If you want clean and modern features at a price that won't crimp your budget, the Quality Inn Salem, Virginia, is a wise choice.

We were put on the first floor near the elevators, which usually wouldn't bother me, but we have 2 small children and heard literally every noise until people went to bed at 2am. The room was nice inside-- 2 queen sized beds, clean sheets, a small kitchen stocked with some dishes, a fridge, stove, and small appliances. The bathroom was clean and stocked with fresh towels. The heat was bumping, so we turned it off and the room was warm the entire night. The water cooler in gym was broken and wipes were dry, but they did offer towels in both gym and pool areas, which was nice. Our kids loved the pool and were able to swim in it for about an hour before bed. Signs on the wall are conflicting about times though-- the pool opens at 10am, but one sign said it closed at 10pm and another said 11pm. There was a restaurant and bar in the lobby, which made it very convenient to grab dinner when we got in. There must have been a company Christmas party in the coference center and people kept coming out to get drinks at the bar. My husband and I ordered hot wings, mozzarella sticks, and a burger and paid close to $50 including tip, which, I'd say, is fairly average. Food came quickly and was hot. We ate in the room with our kids and used the kitchen to prepare their food. The bummer was that breakfast wasn't included in our stay. I guess you have to be Diamond status or something to eat for free. Kids eat free, but it's $10 for breakfast otherwise. The people serving breakfast and maintaining the area we extremely nice and very friendly, but I'd say the food wasn't worth the price. My daughter said the cereal was stale and probably had been sitting in the container a bit. The cooler for the yogurts was either broken or not turned on because each individual yogurt I picked up wasn't super cold. However, there were plenty of "eggs," turkey sausage, and bacon. I believe hash browns and oatmeal were also options. My daughter got some thick sliced toast, which she enjoyed, but I honestly think you can get a better breakfast for less 2 miles down the road at Waffle House. Being a dog friendly hotel and the cleanliness makes me okay with coming back. I'll probably just make sure to pack more groceries next time.

First time rolling into Roanoke Virginia on an Amtrak train into Roanoke station. Like ever. Quite…read morefun and it was an interesting and quiet time. It was cheaper to fly into Washington DC and taking the Amtrak to Roanoke than flying directly in and out of Roanoke regional airport. And so, I took the Amtrak line direct from Washington DC Union station to Roanoke Virginia. It was nice and nonstop. It was a nice and warm March 2026 day in Roanoke, when I arrived. Upon arrival, we disembarked the train and onto the train platform. The Roanoke Amtrak station was nothing more than a stretch of concrete for travelers to walk on after they arrived and signage that welcomed the train and its passengers to the train station. There was no actual building or other facilities that told you what train was departing or arriving. It was just a train station stop in Roanoke, Virginia. Even though Roanoke was a sizable city with its own airport, it felt like it was a small town in the middle of Southwest Virginia. It was a gateway to rural southeast West Virginia and the surrounding areas, but it was the last station where the Southwest Chief train terminated. No train officials to direct you to anywhere, because it wasn't a place where you can transfer to another train. It wasn't the end of the line here in Roanoke. It was a little bit disappointing to see where nobody really cared, since you were on your own. Unless you were traveling with friends or family, you were on your own. The only thing about riding Amtrak is that it can be a very nice experience, especially with the prices. For a 5 hour morning train ride, I spent only $25.00. Quite nice actually. A bit disappointing that only the basic signage that you were in Roanoke and the railroad train tracks ended here. It was nice traveling on a train but the end result was a bit uneventful for sure. The overall experience here on the Amtrak train Southwest Chief from Washington Union station to Roanoke Virginia was very nice and quiet. The Roanoke train station was very basic and very quiet when we arrived on a basic March 2026 afternoon, especially for it being in a downtown area. Once I departed the train with my luggage, I looked around and saw the Roanoke train station signage and was happy that I made it to Roanoke, safe and sound. I looked around for anyone that could point me in the right direction, but only thing I had was my phone and GPS. No security or persons to escort me out of the area, no nothing. It was almost like a public bus terminal but without benches for people to sit and wait. It was like that. Kind of interesting but not really. No restroom facilities or even WiFi or anything. Just a simple space where Amtrak trains can safely park and let their passengers depart. The ambiance was nice and quiet that Wednesday afternoon. I ended up finding my way to the local area bus stop exchange 1/2 mile away, which I walked it with my luggage. After debating not to wait 1 hour for the bus to take me to grab lunch, I walked 2 miles towards my Airbnb for the evening and grabbed a late lunch and dinner around there. The Roanoke Amtrak station is located physically at 55 Norfolk Ave NE in downtown Roanoke. The Museum of Transportation History and the 3rd Street local Roanoke Valley Transit station is nearby. Bookings are typically made online for Amtrak, so best to do that. My time at the Roanoke Amtrak station was brief, knowing that any way out possible was either by walking or calling an Uber for fast service. I decided to walk it because I wanted to save money at the time. For the most part though, it was an interesting experience to arrive at an Amtrak station that did not have a building to house Amtrak station operations, even in a small city town like Roanoke. Just got off the train and walked out of the area and simply into downtown Roanoke. Just like that. It was cool though. No need to pass thru any security or anything to be able to get on or off the train. If you want to, you can use the local bus service to get you to the 3rd street station and walk 0.5 miles to here to wait for your Amtrak train out of Roanoke. If you prefer, there's always walking, Uber, and Lyft at your disposal. Roanoke is a walkable city but usually it's more comfortable if you took the local bus service or ride the local bus for pure enjoyment and convenience. The Amtrak train itself was comfortable and easy enough to sleep upright if you are sitting. They have outlets to charge your devices while traveling on the rails. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Cheap and reliable transportation. Definitely worth considering versus flying.
