Relatively clean for the price point and an adequate breakfast with good coffee. The first day they failed to service the room at all. I don't mind reusing the towels but the room was so damp they did not dry. So off to the desk where a flustered desk clerk scrounged clean towels from the laundry room. The second day they serviced the room (we specifically requested it), but we arrived back in the room at 10 pm to find they had taken away the dirty towels but not left clean bath towels. The front desk clerk, nearly in tears, explained she only had one clean towel and gave it to us. I went to the laundry room myself and scrounged some clean bath mats to use at towels. Indeed at ten am the third day when we left the hotel, we asked and were told that the towels "were still in the dryer." In what world is it acceptable for even a budget hotel to leave guests with NO bath towels? This was a failure on the part of the housekeeping manager to have appropriate systems in place and be sure they are followed. And someone should have stayed late to finish the load of towels. And the hotel should always have 50-100 spare towels. Terrible customer service. Worst of all, when we arrived, we found a pair of men's underwear that did not belong to us in the floor of the closet. And the hotel had some unsightliness. A second floor room that was storage for spare furniture had no window covering and the light was left on, so it looked like a junked up mess visible to all at night. Also the curtains in the laundry room were tied off in a knit and similarly visible to anyone outside the hotel. And dehumidifiers in the first floor hallways. All this implies a hotel badly in need of maintenance and an overhaul in management. Not what we expect of IHG properties. We come to this area regularly to visit family, but we will never stay here again.

For myself, I don't need a B&B with the pricey high-end amenities. When I'm on vacation or traveling, I'm either trying to get away from it all, or can drive to a shop specializing in those things if I really must. Gilbert's was perfect for me. An old family farm, converted to a B&B, was quiet and comfortable. I appreciate the classic, not-so-modern, character of an old home. The interior was tastefully and simply decorated with antique period pieces supplemented with modern decor. The yellow pine hardwood floors throughout the house were gorgeous and were what caught my eye immediately. The old barn and paddock were hiding places for the three outdoor cats. The wild turkeys occasionally perched in the tall trees. The proprietor, an adorable woman, showed me through the house with all the nooks and crannies and hidden rooms that made me realize the house was a lot bigger than it appears from the outside. I couldn't have gone wrong with any room I picked. What made it feel like home, were the interactions with the owners, who greeted me, and the other guests, both upon arrival and at the end of the day when we returned from our adventures. At end end of my visit, I didn't want to leave. I already felt like I was home. And the good-bye hug went a long way to making me wish I could stay and and the same time start planning the next visit. Just like a visit to mom 's or grandma's.

We learned the true story and history of Lizzie Borden for 90 minutes. He did not rush our group, he answered questions, and added some extra fun into the experience. The gift shop is truly unique and everyone we encountered there was welcoming and interesting. But that is an option for you if you'd like to stay in a haunted house. Our tour was fabulous. Larry spent over an hour walking us through the various rooms of the property, explaining the events leading up to and after the murders, explaining the family dynamic, the comings and goings of neighbors and then the trial itself. Beyond that, the life she lived after her acquittal. Details and side stories and lots of drama. Just a tremendous time and I can't recommend it highly enough. This is a fabulous time in American history. And yes, they have a complete gift shop in the back. Book ahead for the tour, or you can just show up at the gift shop any time. As to "Is it haunted?" I will say that we did not see or encounter anything on the tour but it does seem strange that every cup of coffee we had since then has been flavorless. No correlation but... strange.
