All the trails were lovely. We really enjoyed Rainbow falls with its 80 foot drop. The Alum Cave Bluff Trail was so cool at the top as you rested under a huge rock overhang. The views from Kuwohi were stunning. I would suggest taking the trail rather than the paved path. It's a little bit longer but it's shady. The paved path is so steep. We were not a fan of Cade's Cove. Apparently, there are often bear sightings there but all we saw were a few turkeys. The traffic was atrocious. We did do Abrams trail at the middle of the loop. Parking for that trail was the easiest of all trails we did. A national park pass is not required but you do need a parking pass. Ours was $10 for the week. You are allowed to drive through the park for free but if you park longer than 15 min you need a pass. I did see rangers ticketing cars.

If you are parking for more than 15 minutes anywhere, you must buy a daily parking pass though ($5 per day). These can be purchased at any information center. The mountains and nature are breathtaking. We even saw so many elk and wild turkeys early in the morning while we drove through!! We also saw a black bear. Many hikes and nature trails to choose from, including ones that are completely drivable. Kuwohi Observation Tower: Easy paved uphill walk. Do not go in the early morning when the fog is thick because you will not be able to see anything. Alum Cave Trail: Pretty easy trail. Beautiful nature and cool rocks to look at. Took about 3 hours roundtrip to reach inspiration point. Cades Cove: A drivable scenic loop road. 11 miles one way. Took about an hour or so driving very slowly enjoying the scenery. Saw a black bear that held up traffic. It is closed to cars on Wednesdays to open it up to walkers and bicycles.

We decided to stop in Dandrige overnight and catch some zzzs before making the final leg the following day. It was the 4th of July and we came across the Dandridge dock while searching for some dinner. We got out to take a look and wow, the view of Douglas Lake was so beautiful that evening. It has a long walkway and at the end of it, there are Adirondack chairs for people to sit on. There were several people taking their boats out or coming in, families fishing, and other people like ourselves taking in the view. Definitely worth taking a few minutes to take a peek when staying in or around Dandridge or simply passing through. Stay safe, Friends!

In the end I walked out with a nice rod and reel combo, a few extra leads and tippets and a big smile on my face. We complied and saw a young lady sitting on the porch across the street. She smiled big and waved! We pulled down the gravel road to what appeared to be an empty lot...However the owner, Alex, rounded the corner, stood on the bridge with a tattered hat, dark glasses and long white beard. I questioned if we were in the right place.......so I walked up to him and immediately he made my family and I feel right at home with engaging conversation, anecdotes, and explanations. Instead of explaining things directly to me, he sat down and took the time to explain things to my 8 year old son and held his attentional phenomenally.....while still explaining the process to all of us. Poles and bait were provided!!!!! Alex has an amazing way with kids and LOVES explaining things! My son caught 3 trout in under 15 minutes!!! A fish was on the line as soon as it hit the water!!! This really boosted my son's confidence in fishing! Alex took us into the cleaning trailer and gave my son a biology lesson while gutting the fish, talking about the heart, gills, spleen, liver, ect. My son is still talking about how amazing it was! We purchased the trout and tipped Alex for cleaning them for us! Needless to say, my 8 year old is walking tall knowing that he caught our dinner tonight. Hahaha! The owner gave the kids directions on how to fish and provides all of the equipment. He is super friendly and got excited when the kids caught something. You pay for what you catch so keep that in mind especially if you go with a large group. The price is super reasonable especially since this is the freshest trout. He also has a few animals and sells local honey too. The owner will clean your fish for an additional tip. DO IT!!! Also, BRING a COOLER with ICE Between our 4 kids and 1.5 hours, we left with over 27 lbs of trout. We had all but 4 filet. The other 4 were cleaned, but left intact with heads so we can bring them home to smoke. We cooked some the same night we caught it. 2 filet in a brown sugar butter sauce and the other two in a fresh garlic, salt, and pepper blend. All cookies on foil over a charcoal grill. Booked a guided sunset fishing trip for myself and my 13-year-old daughter while we were visiting…read moreNorth Carolina for the first time. I placed the reservation around 6 p.m. and immediately received an email indicating that the trip had been booked, so I reasonably assumed everything was confirmed. The following day, we had activities planned all day and had no cell phone reception while we were in the mountains. We returned to our lodge around 4 p.m., and since our fishing trip was scheduled for 6 p.m., I checked my email to find out where we needed to meet. That was when I discovered an email sent at 3:48 a.m. stating that my booking had been declined. Nowhere on the website did I see anything clearly explaining that the reservation still needed to be approved by the owner after booking. The site also instructed me to purchase a North Carolina fishing license, which I did based on the expectation that our trip was confirmed. I texted the number listed on the website and was told that I should have received an email and a text shortly after making the reservation letting me know whether it had actually been confirmed. I received neither. Since the initial email appeared to confirm the booking, I went to bed believing we were all set. By the time I discovered the cancellation, it was only two hours before the scheduled trip, making it virtually impossible to arrange another activity for the evening. I'm also now out approximately $34 for fishing licenses that we purchased specifically for this trip. Very disappointing experience, especially because this was supposed to be something special for my daughter during our first visit to North Carolina. The lack of clear communication regarding the approval process turned what we thought was a confirmed reservation into a major letdown.
