Our trip to Wild Bear Tubing was definitely one of the highlights of our Smoky Mountains visit. We…read morearrived just a few minutes prior to our scheduled departure and checked in. The shop has a lot to offer in regard to things that you may want/need for your trip such as necklaces to attach your shades to, dry bags, sunglasses, etc. They employ a lot of young people/teenagers, and those individuals helped us to get our life jackets, tubes, safety training and launching us into the river. It's a self-guided tour. No staff members accompany you, but they tell you to stay left at the fork and if you go under the overpass, you've gone too far. With this being our first tubing experience, we were a bit nervous. We ordered the XL tubes (unnecessary) as well as the cooler tube (also unnecessary). The majority of the route is shaded from the sun, and I believe I would've been okay taking one full reusable water bottle. We rarely accessed our cooler and after floating in the river, we didn't really want to snack...even with the use of hand sanitizer. We saw horses, a beaver and a turtle during our float. The water level seemed to be a bit low, with us needing to lift our bottoms to avoid contact with rocks. It was slow-moving and relaxing, but I'd love to return and experience it when the water level is a bit higher. At the end, we loaded onto a waiting shuttle bus and went back to base. Their changing rooms and bathrooms were clean and very convenient. The only thing that could've made them better were showers! We changed out of our wet swimsuits/trunks and freshened up as best as we could. We spoke with the owner briefly, who told us how her sons (the best in the world, she says) built that place for her. Upstairs are 3 apartment units. She was really nice. I also overheard her praising her team for the good work they'd been doing this season, and her hopes that the weather and crowds continues as they have for the remainder (I was in the restroom). I would definitely suggest this as a reprieve from the Summer heat if visiting the area any time soon!

The only disappointment was that they tell you to get there 45 minutes early for no reason and they got there late so we were standing around with nothing to do.

I hate to leave a lukewarm review of an experience that should have been one of the highlights of…read moreour summer vacation. However, our guide Caleb (who is probably a perfectly nice guy under different circumstances) does not have a clue how to interact with kids. His irritation that we had children in our party (and non-athletic kids who needed guidance on how to paddle at that) was quite apparent for the entire duration of our voyage. It put me on edge, feeling like I had to be apologetic for not having raised big strapping boys who'd spent their summers on the water, and I ended up spending the time barking orders at my kids because I was nicer about it than he was, and wanted him to lay off. At one point he started shouting at us all to paddle, then immediately realized we were paddling straight into a cluster of rocks and told us to stop - but it was too late. My eldest son and I went flying over the side of the raft. He was plucked from the water immediately, but I wasn't so lucky. My husband held out his oar for me to grab onto, but by then the raft was already too far away. I followed the instructions I had been given for such an event, floating and bobbing along until another raft pulled upside of me and was able to pull me aboard. Mind you, this experience didn't upset me: I didn't get hurt, I never felt I was in any real danger, and now I had a story to tell. But when my rescue raft dropped me off in the raft with my family, Caleb proceeded to chew me out for "letting go of the raft" (huh? I was never holding onto the raft?) Later on, my kids told me that after I'd fallen over, when no one knew how to proceed (try to save mom or keep moving?) he actually screamed at them to "Paddle, damnit!" The views were absolutely gorgeous. And we got to see a bald eagle.

Zip- a-dee-do-da!…read more Ok, couldn't help myself with that one. Here we go! This was our first Zip lining experience, but we are outdoor folks with an adventure streak in us. We wanted to surprise our 11 year-old with something other than white water rafting. Don't get me wrong we love our white water, but we just wanted something new and the rivers here can be pretty tame. So after finding a few outfitters we went with this operation mainly based on how helpful the girl on the phone was. It was an easy drive from Asheville, NC (about 1 hour) and their directions were spot on. The guides Steve-O and Joe showed us how to gear up quickly and safely and out the door we went. We went on a couple of practice zips each a little further up than the last until away we went. The guides did not inspire fear at all and actually encouraged us to go faster and brake later. They even bounced the more adventurous of the group around while on the line. The view was beautiful and the last two Zips alone made the 2 hour round trip worth it. If you go you can ask for Joe and Steve, but really it seemed like everyone working there was great!. Around back of the building is the dog house with some pretty satisfying Chili Dogs so you can grab a bite for the road. Don't forget to sign the wall. Look for us "3 of 6 Pearson People Were Here" on the bottom center.
