One of my favorite short little hikes in the area. And if you seek a longer hike, this hike connects to other routes. If you want a hike that goes straight up gradually with great views along the way then this is your hike. At sunset it offers great views of Simi valley and at sunrise you can see great views of LA county. Plus you get see cool rock formations and some caves a long the way. The hike does get busy on the weekends. It is a well traveled hike. The parking lot at trailhead is small but across the highway there is a larger parking lot. Just be very careful crossing the roads to the trailhead: the crossing are very dangerous with fast traffic. read more

Great set of trails for hiking and mountain biking. My boys and I were a little caught off guard by the varied trail system on our way down and got off track a few times. One of which was met by a very close encounter with a mature super thick and patient rattlesnake. It was coiled and ready to strike within a foot of our legs as we rode by before realizing it was there. That said in all my years hiking and biking these local mountains and hundreds of snake encounters not one has tried to strike. Rattlesnakes are of course dangerous but of all the poisonous snakes out there I'll take a rattler any day. read more

I love this entire park! There are plenty of different trails and hiking spots for miles. If you take the route that heads down, you will arrive at a beautiful park with benches and ports potty's. I hiked here for a trail clean up and there was quite a bit of trash, although a lot of it was tucked away into the nooks and crannies of the greenery and trees and rocks. I loved the picture perfect spots that popped up every now and then. The cave that you can climb up into to get to an overhead view was awesome. read more

Great trail to train for elevation! It starts off with a steep incline but the views of the valleys are worth it. There's lots of crevices to take breaks on and rocks to climb for better views. This is also a popular mountain bike trail so you will see and hear a lot of bikes with bells coming downhill quickly or uphill. So, stay alert and share the trail. Also, dogs are allowed but must be leashed. There's not much shade on the trail and it gets really windy when it's Santa Ana winds time of the year. And when it's warm, there's snakes around so watch out for the rattlers! In terms of wild life, I've seen lots of different birds, including turkey vultures and a couple of deer a few times. There are no trash cans along the trail so pack it in and pack it out. There's no rest room either. There's a tiny parking lot in front of the entrance but plenty of street parking over the freeway ramp. read more

Mountains or the beach is the best place for me to get a quick workout in -since COVID closed all the local gyms too. I decided to head out to Rocky Peak Park, since I checked the weather and knew conditions were going to be perfect for a quick hike. I'm glad I did :) 85F degrees (it's been 90F-100F out here) some fresh air and bit of sunshine ...perfect hiking conditions right now ~enjoy it all, it's beautiful right now. I'm pissed!!! Pissed off that I didn't find this jewel of a hike sooner! We've been in Simi Valley for almost 2 years and the Rocky Peak Hiking trail is basically in our back yard! I think what I love most about it is all the side trails along the main one that lead you to various rock formations and small caves to explore. There's definitely something for every level of hiker. It's pretty steep in the beginning and the end, so people who have difficulty walking might choose a different trail. During my hike I saw older people and younger people all with varying degrees of fitness! Make sure to BRING WATER, especially if you're going any time during the hours of sunlight, there is little to no shade and the sun is unforgiving. Sun protection is a must and for you sensitive skin types, you might want to wear breathable long sleeves and hats. Dogs welcome, I saw a few on the trail, although make sure to keep them on leash for their safety... it's a looooooong way down! There are a couple of "rest stops" with strategically placed benches (quitters bench)... for a rest and soaking up the view. Tons of photo opportunities to take photos that make you look like you're on top of the world. I'm excited to make this "my hike"!! Highly recommend! read more

Free parking at the entrance for around 14 cars or south of the 118 freeway. The popular fire road is all uphill with little to no shade. It was windy in some parts and the view were excellent in many directions. Bicycles and dogs are allowed on this rocky with large boulders trail. read more

Great hike near Chatsworth/Simi Valley area! I am not from the area and a friend wanted to take me on a hike and brought me here. It was awesome! Parking: can only fit like 6 cars at trailhead, but you can park across the bridge and walk over. We got there around 6:15AM Saturday morning and the trailhead was already full! Miles hiked: 5.8 miles Elevation gain: less than 1400 ft The hike itself is pretty easy to follow until the end. We got to the true summit, and it was a lil bit of a rocky scramble. Also so windy the day we went! Winds were 30-40 mph. Felt like I was going to get blown off at times! So worth it. Great sunrise or sunset hike! read more

It's a very beautiful area and provides some nice hiking opportunities with the main trail being about 5-miles, but you can stretch that out easily if you desire. Rocky Peak is a panoramic 2,715-foot summit on the border between Los Angeles and Ventura counties in the Santa Susana Mountains. The county line-straddling peak stands at the center of the 4,800 acre park and a unique summit marker is at the top, representing the boundary between Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Ambling over boulders to the eastern (Los Angeles County) side of Rocky Peak, you will spot another fun feature on the mountain, an impressive summit register in a metal box standing on a short pole. Rocky Peak is one of the highest points in the range, delivering panoramic 360-degree views. You won't get an easier off ramp/parking experience anywhere, but the parking is limited. If the spaces by the trailhead are full, additional parking can be found at the south end of the bridge over Route 118. read more

Need to get away? Leave the hustle behind and absorb the peace & fresh air of Rocky Peak. Nestled between Los Angeles county and Ventura County is this beautiful & serene place to reflect on life. Getting to the top will challenge both your stamina and endurance. It takes about an hour to get there since the path is very long and includes a variety of inclines. Awesome hike! It was definitely an intense 2.5 mile up the mountain; especially the last mile that was an intense incline. There's no shade on the trail, so go early to avoid the heat on a warm day. We hiked a little over 5 miles out and back and it took us about 1.5 hours since we jogged most of the way down. The trail is not completely flat and pretty rocky, so make sure you have good traction on your shoes. My cousin twisted her ankle and fell and scraped her knee on two separate occasions. The view isn't that impressive, but it's a great hike to check out if you're in the area. read more

The hiking trail here is on an incline and it keeps going miles into the park... We only hiked 1.5-2 miles up and it was already super tiring and HOT. Be sure to wear sunblock, there is no shade. Found a cave along the way though, that was fun. Pet friendly, as long as your pal is on a leash. :) read more

So beautiful! Giant rocks, lizards, birds and nice off trails through the rocks. Such a pretty hike, you can see the freeway from most of the higher peaks (just in case you get lost lol). It's pretty convenient: right off the exit with a small parking lot right by the gate and additional parking across the street where there looks looe other trails too. I really enjoy this place. So peaceful up between the big rocks. It's also big eniugh to take the trail for an easy hike or go off trail for a more intense one like I prefer. This trail is nice during the winter time. Just come prepare if you hike during summer as there is no shade from the sun. So bring plenty of water and sun screen to protect yourself. The parking lot is small but free, there is another lot across the bridge. But try to start early if you want a parking spot. It's roughly 5 mile round trip, but you can explore further and hop onto the Chumash or Hummingbird trails. It's definitely a nice change from the radio tower hikes at Glendale area. As always pack accordingly to the weather and have fun. read more

Great hike a little incline right at first but nothing impossible just if you don't walk a lot you'll get winded at first and think the trail is awful but it levels out now and then with a gradual continuous climb. There's a small rock mini cave looks more like mini rock kids house all rock walls which amongst all that sand stone in the area is odd but there's things to find still out there so go check it out -these are the hills the mansons roamed around in and the native Americans lived in them- the Chinese were here building the railroad and draining the marshy land you can find pottery chips etc Bring water. Bring protection if alone it's quite sparsely populated and you could come across mountain lion. The rock house is a ways up the trail. But it has to want you to find it so have a good heart on your hike and it will appear. read more

But not just a typical crew hike, this hike is not about exploring untreked trails, bushwhacking, poison oak, puddle dog brush, or rattlesnake avoidance, rock climbing, scree scrambling, or even water crossings, etc...it was about spending some quiet time eating, socializing, and watching the sun set and the moon rise. STATS: Distance:3 miles Time: 1.5-2 hours Trek: Car Shuttle Trail: Fire Road, singletrack, rocky Rating: Advanced Beginner I've chosen Rocky Peak to by my 500th review, 50th for the year 2016, for a couple reasons. Although it's a milestone for me, a PHEW! I made it this far, it is overshadowed by the day Don was born. We all know hiking is a dangerous activity, no one knows what is on Mother Nature's agenda for the day, but we hike because it's what we love to do and fearing Mother Nature is not something we do, we can only respect her. Me and The Crew holds our Rocky Peak sunset potlucks near and dear to our hearts. It is a hike Don would post every couple of months. Even though his hiking trails are not on this earth, we continue to gather here for family time and he is with us in spirit. OUR ROUTE: As mentioned in the stats, this is a car shuttle hike, for us anyway. However, it can be an up and back, of course. After consolidating cars on Kuehner we drive over to the Rocky Peak Road trailhead. Once parked, we ascend on a fire road for about 0.8 miles and over 500ft. of elevation. Those who can't compute those numbers, it's like having a defibrillator used on your chest. Well, not really, but the numbers do mean that your heart gets a jump start. At the first fork with a grant view of the city in the background, a dirty, dusty, rocky singletrack catawampus trail in the foreground, it's all downhill from here. Once to our "outdoor patio," we set out our potluck contributions and grub. Dessert is usually served with a large side of the most magnificent sunsets. Cleaning up and packing out, headlamps on, the trail back to the cars can be a bit sketchy. Rocks and ditches can be hard to see, so should you decide to do this at sunset, take extra care with each step. EPIC DAY! This hike takes you up and over some very interesting rock features including giant boulders, unusual caves, and various huge rock outcroppings. The scenes are quite nice, and on a clear day, you can see to the ocean. The only down side to the hike is that it is adjacent to a major freeway. So don't expect wilderness solitude. There are a freakton of trails all over this mountain, just watch out for rattlesnakes, and dirt bike riders. DISCLAIMER: Hiking is not something that can be taken lightly. It can be life-threatening as you see and hear on the news, people die or get lost all time. Please, if you are going to hike, never go alone and prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Remember when going for a hike, no matter how short you think it may be, always be prepared. Carry at least two liters of water for every five miles (more if the weather is warm), protein bar, nuts, and electrolytes. Wear sturdy lug sole shoes and protective clothing. Some areas the weather can change quicker than a firefighter can put on his gear. It is also very important, always always always let a family member or friend know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Lastly, have fun when you hike it up. read more

In 1990 this 4,369-acre park opened for public use. Parts of it includes Runkle Ranch which was owned by the entertainer Bob Hope. The trail offers great views of Simi Valley and Santa Susana Pass. The pass was used by Chumash Indians who traded and hunted in the area. It was later used as a stagecoach route. In some areas of the trail you can see grooves that were created by the covered-wagon wheels carving into the soft sandstone paths. The area is also a wildlife corridor for coyotes, bobcats and mountain lions that travel from the Santa Susana Mountains to the Santa Monica Mountains, using a tunnel under the freeway. I entered trail from Corriganville Park using that same wildlife tunnel. Most of the large animals hide out during the day so there is a slim chance that you will encounter any of them. I did see some fresh coyote tracks though. During the hike you'll encounter a number of sandstone rock formations and some boulders that appear as if the slightest nudge will cause them to fall over. Some of the areas appear as if they are right out of the Flintsones. Towards the summit you'll come across a stone house that fun to hang out in. There is also a man-made cave that is rumored to be built for the "The Lone Ranger" filming. Other nearby notable locations that are worth visiting are the Spahn Ranch which was used as a filming location. It was also the former home of the notorious Manson Family. Corriganville Park was also a filming location and a western-based theme park. Old Santa Susana Stage Road is a historic-cultural monument. It was part of the main route for travel by stagecoaches between Los Angeles and San Francisco. There's a section called the Devil's Slide that has s tiled plaque marking the route of the stagecoach. read more

This is a great place for any hiking or nature enthusiast! The main trail itself starts off a bit tough and then gets easier as you go. Although, depending on how far you go it can get quite challenging again. For being in between Simi and the SFV it is remarkably isolated and off the beaten path. You will see a great variety of plant and animal life. There are interesting rock formation if you happen to like geology and even a neat cave you can explore (it's pretty small actually and you can see light from the opening on the other end). During the summer I would advise that you watch out for rattle snakes. They are EVERYWHERE! Be especially cautious of the baby snakes as they can't control their venom and may be more prone to attack if agitated. Last time I was there some genius called me over and asked if I wanted to see a snake. I was about to knock his teeth out when I realized he was talking about a rattle snake (lol). He was getting a little too close and was trying to touch it with a stick. Snakes can actually strike the length of their bodies so this guy was well within that range. Aside from not wanting to get bitten just use some some common sense and don't be a dick to the wildlife. We are visitors there and should leave everything as we find it. I can't speak to the mountain biking as I only hike, but plenty of people do it. And boy does it look challenging! Also, another nice thing about this hike is the views. You'll see more the further you hike up and anywhere you look is going to be breathtaking. Another word of caution would be to mind the heat during the summer and bring plenty of water. The sun can be brutal when it's beating down on that rocky path and you need water to keep hydrated. Bring more than you think you'll need because it's easy to forget how far you've hiked when you're gazing at those gorgeous surroundings. I wear a hat and rub on a ton of sun block as well. The only thing I wish they would do is fix the parking lot. There is a huge dip from where the pavement ends and the dirt begins. I know that parks may not have a ton of funding right now but shoveling some dirt shouldn't cost too much. The lot also isn't very big and has space for about 6 or 7 cars. I wish they could expand it but there is plenty of parking across the bridge. If you've decided to hike here then you've made a fine choice. Just be safe and you'll thoroughly enjoy this beautiful trail. read more

Rocky Peak Park - This is the cave I mentioned in my review. Pretty sweet. - Hiking Near Me - Simi Valley, California

This is a great hike if you live in the area and aren't in the mood to drive out to Malibu or Wildwood, or if you're just craving something different (and a lot more arid). Getting here is a piece of cake: Exit the 118 at Rocky Peak Road and boom, you're there. The trail head is on the north side of the freeway, but it has a small parking lot which is generally packed. Fortunately, there is additional parking on the other side of the 118, so finding a spot for your ride should never be an issue. This is your basic "out and back" hike; A round trip to the peak is ~6mi and will take you under 3 hours. The terrain is dry and rocky, with some decent inclines that will bomb your quads and calves into submission. Nothing too advanced though; I'd give it an easy to intermediate rating. In return for the pain you'll be rewarded with some nice sweeping vistas of Simi and the SF Valley, and a few interesting rock formations scattered here and there. Nothing awe inspiring, but you come here for exercise/punishment more than the views. Being the nice guy that I am, I just posted some pics of those views, along with a trail/elevation map of my last hike for your reference (you're welcome). In terms of wildlife, it's basically lizards and snakes, with a few stink bugs tossed in to keep things interesting. The snakes seem to enjoy sun bathing on the trails; I almost stepped on a lounging baby rattler the last time I was here, so keep an eye on your feet. There's absolutely zero shade (welcome to the desert), so bring your hats and sunscreen, as well as plenty of water. I'd suggest avoiding this trail in the mid-afternoon, especially in summer when it can get extremely hot. And be sure to wear your hiking shoes, as it can get pretty rocky in places; It's very easy to loose traction if you run into a sandy patch on an incline. Note that other than a couple of benches and a sign or two, there's absolutely no facilities here so be sure and pee before you leave and bring a plastic bag for your trash. All in all, not a bad hike. I personally prefer Wildwood over Rocky Peak, but if you live in Simi this spot can't be beat for a quick workout. Certainly a nice alternative to the treadmills at the gym. Recommended. read more

Awesome hike with great views of the valley! On clear days you can see downtown L.A. peaking over the mountains to the South and even the Ocean! Its a great hike for the sights and is just a great workout. While it is mostly steep uphills throughout, there are a few good spots to rest and take in the views. The one complaint I have with this trail is just how much it has been eroded the past two years. The ditches created by water runoff at the beginnings of the trail have gotten big enough to hide in, and the rocks and loose gravel make it very easy to slip with the incline. I highly recommend wearing a proper pair of hiking boots or being extremely careful near the beginning as a few people have gotten hurt! read more

Ever wanted to get away, yet still be close? Here is the best trail to do so... Depending on where you live you can literally walk, or do a short drive to reach the parking for Rocky Peak. PARKING: The main lot at the top of the Rocky Peak exit typically has plenty of parking on either side of the bridge, but if it doesn't you can always use these alternatives - - There is more parking at Corriganville Park off of Smith Road, just on the South end of Kuehner in a large dirt lot. If you park here you can carpool up to the main trailhead or you can hike East a little ways until you run into an MTB trail (typically called "G-Spot") and you can hike up that until you hit the main trail (~15-20min), or at the North end of Kuehner (North of the 118 freeway) there is parking available and then you can hike beyond the chain-link fence up Hummingbird Trail until you reach the main trail. Either way gets you to the same place, yes these alternate route hikes may be a little more rigorous than heading up from the trail head. TRAIL: It's not publicly maintained so if you're looking for a "walk in the park", then you should find a park to walk in... The trail isn't difficult but I wouldn't suggest wearing your favorite stilettos, or any of those goofy looking shape-ups as your odds of coming down the hill with your heels still attached are slim to none. The trail is kept clean, and is very obvious if you stay on the main fire road, which you can take back as far as you like... It loops all the way around to Reseda Blvd... not my first choice. Typically I'll start at Rocky Peak and walk back to Chumash Trail and then down into the houses (~7 miles), but be sure to have transportation on both ends if you don't want to loop back. The views on the trails aren't the greatest (hense the 4 star), but there are some pretty nice and scenic views throughout. There isn't a whole lot of shade, and there is no water or restrooms, so be sure to bring some supplies - and remember... pack it in, pack it out! Safety first my fellow nature seekers. You may run into a few other hikers depending on the day and time, and the farther you go back the more it's just you and nature, however I believe there is a homeless person living near the Johnson Mountain Way fork, so stay left and just keep on trucking. They have never bothered me, but I've heard them playing a sweet tune on their harmonica. MAP: I don't know of a specific map that designates the trail, but Google Maps does a pretty good job of showing the main trail and some of the smaller trails (i.e., Hummingbird). I'm going to try to update the maps with a few side trails to the County Line marker, "G-Spot", and Chumash & hopefully I'll be posting a link to those maps here shortly. read more

From Rocky peak exit it's 6 miles(Round trip) & the elevation gain is 1200 which puts you at around 2,700 feet at the top. (please note the trail doesn't end at the top!) I wouldn't recommend this hike if it's your first time & out of shape. The last mile or so is probably the hardest because of the incline. A trekking pole isn't needed, but I saw a few older people using them. There are a few spots where the trail will need your attention as it is not flat, and sure footing is needed. This trail keeps going to La Quinta. I did 9 miles on 12-2-10 I did it in 4hrs (RT) with my dog, and a 20lb pack. I took several breaks to take pictures...I even packed a lunch. On the way up there are several spots that have a view worth taking a look at which is why it took me so long! I thought it would be a bit boring being that everything was dried up, but the Rock formation kept me entertained as well as the view of the surrounding mountains that I've never seen before. Make sure you bring a hat & jacket because there is no shade, and it does get windy at times in the winter. The trail isn't very busy, but you'll run into a few bikers, and even joggers! Even tho the trail head is by a hwy you'll soon forget its there, and only hear nature. read more

Came here with my girlfriend to hike to the "nets" . Someone had either stolen or cut the cables you need to climb down to them. It's also not said anywhere you'd have to do such an insane thing to get to the swing. The hike stops having signs after .2 miles and it's easy to get lost and go off the path. It's beyond difficult for the average person, I'm pretty athletic and a 21 year old guy and I eventually got exhausted. If you do the loop it's like 6+ miles. Bikes almost run you over constantly. The 'arrows' supposedly taking you to the right place are wrong as a 'prank' I suppose. It has a beautiful view but you don't need to go far up to see it. Coming down is the hard part and will absolutely destroy your feet, and other things depending how many times you fall which will be a lot. The entire hike is covered with plants that have stickers that stab you beyond painfully. They'll get in your socks and shoes and even underwear if you fall and are beyond hard to get out. They hurt. Needless to say, I won't be coming back. read more

Not the best hike, but close to where I live, and a damn good workout. We hike to the very top, which is 2.7 miles, and back down comes out to be 5 miles and some change. The floor is very uneven. Very easy to sprain your ankle (hence the name 'Rocky'). We have only seen one big rattle snake since I've started going, which has been about 10 times. The snake ran away. The other little snake in my photo did not move. Also saw a tarantula. read more

So I had planned to do a hike out in Azusa but because of the rain over night I decided against it. When I woke up I still had the urge to hike so a friend and I decided to check out Rocky Peak since its so close to home. This was our first time to Rocky Peak and it did not disappoint. We started from the Santa Susana Pass and took the Rocky Peak trail up. The weather was so awesome for this hike. The area is very dry and exposed so the cool overcast day was perfect. The threat of rain was very exciting for me. I would only hike this in the cooler months due to the exposure, incline, and length. On the way up the views are incredible. The rock formations are so amazing. I can't believe that this was here all along and I just discovered it after living 2 years in the area. We found this awesome cave to explore and we stopped for a photo shoot. We took our time making it up to Rocky Peak, the last part up is pretty steep we stopped to catch our breath a few times. Once at the top it was amazing we took a rest at the top with views of Simi Valley and the San Fernando Valley on the other side. And even though it was cloudy and overcast we were able to make out the Hollywood Hills with the towering skyscrapers of downtown LA peeking from behind, soo amazing. We continued on in hopes of taking the Chumash Trail down where we had arranged for my bf to pick us up. The trails at times are not clearly marked esp the Chumash from Rocky Peak. We got a bit confused as to which way to go but eventually we went with our gut feeling and ended up on a narrow trail that we decided was Chumash. After a mile down the narrow secluded trail we finally spotted people and we confirmed we in fact were on Chumash. This hike was exciting and very beautiful. We started at 10am and made it to Flanagan to be picked up at 2:30pm this included lots of breaks, photo shoots and rock climbing and exploring. I estimated we did about 8 miles. Rocky Peak Park - Hiking Near Me - Simi Valley, California

The rounded rocks make this a more interesting hike. Not just to look at, but a different type of ground to walk. These boulders are not that unique in the global sense, but they are in the Southland where the trails in the Santa Monica Mountains or the Angeles National Forest all start to look the same after a while. It also helps that this isn't another hike to a peak with a communications tower. The 6-mile roundtrip hike to the key overlook is found on a narrow side trail from the wide Rocky Peak Road. After a steep stretch that is along the Simi Valley side and a view of layers of uplifted ground at an angle, the trail cuts to the right. If Rocky Peak Road becomes fairly flat, then you've missed the side trail. Both the San Fernando and Simi Valleys can be seen from the perch. The parking area at the trailhead is small so most people park on the south side of the 118 freeway. The hike has nothing relating to Rocky Balboa.
