After all these years of going to Gloucester, finally was able to make it out to the art colony. It's basically a tiny little bohemian neighborhood that used to play host to people even art illiterate people like me have heard of - Hopper, Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam - and still is home to a group of artists.
GIven its location on a small peninsula, it feels like a world unto itself. There is free parking right at the entrance to the peninsula, and a little park with benches. Once you enter the peninsula, you can just walk around and poke around in the galleries, a lot of which are basically the first floors of the artist's house. One gallery, the Goeteman gallery, I got to alittle past usual closing hours. I turned the knob to check if it was open. It wasn't open, but the nice lady sitting on the bench right outside reading a book, was like, "Oh, would you like me to let you in?" and she opened it up and gave me the tour, turned it out she was the artist, living upstairs haha. And then another gallery down the street I walked in and through the door, another woman calls from a room adjoining the gallery space - it was the kitchen, and she was making dinner hah. And then her neighbor's gallery, I walked in, it was empty, and then when I walked out, some guy sitting on a deck the house over chilling out with a group of friends called down to me and was like hey mister if you need any help I'm up here. I bet nobody locks their doors, it's like this hippie norman rockwell by the sea art utopia. Warm fuzzies!
