I recently had the privilege of training at Rocklin Judo while in the Rocklin area for an extended period of time. I was a bit apprehensive as the last time I had trained Judo was in college, almost 30 years prior. I was concerned about my age, my ability to stay healthy, and whether or not I would be the only "old guy" in the dojo. Needless to say, my concerns were quickly alleviated after my first week of training. Coach Shane has created a unique environment that is conducive to learning the arts of Judo and Jiu-jitsu for all ages and all athletic abilities. He has truly created a family of practitioners of all different ranks, athletic abilities, backgrounds, and ages. The centerpiece of Shane's dojo is a high performance club for youths. The professionalism, guidance, and care that Coach Shane provides kids of all ages is astounding. Integrated around this circle is a mixture of adult students from a multitude of backgrounds; active professionals in law enforcement, fire service leadership, doctors, teachers, counselors, tradesman, entrepreneurs, pilots, military contractors, office managers, canine trainers, corporate executives, dojo owners, and college students, to name a few. Rocklin Judo is truly a wonderful family. Coach Shane has also assembled an impeccable staff of black belts that add additional context and attention to the curriculum. At any one time, there would be at least three black belts in attendance - providing focused and personalized instruction during each and every class. I have never practiced at a dojo before where there was this high a number of expert to student ratio. If you are a parent looking to build a strong, confident, and independent child - get them involved with Rocklin Judo. We consider ourselves incredily lucky to have Rocklin Judo available for our 15y/o son. He has been a student at Rocklin Judo for 2 years now, and we could not be happier with his progress, the training provided, and the guidance from his teachers. The intructors are truly invested, not only in the martial training of their students, but also in their growth, maturity, and their health & safety. The Senseis, starting with Coach Shane, truly excel as teachers and mentors. There are so many schools that just hand out belts for monetary fees in the area, but at Rocklin Judo, those belts are earned. I was looking specifically for a judo gym in the Sacramento area when I stumbled across this place, and I'm glad I did. This school teaches the traditional practices of judo which is something I both admire and respect. The sensei are passionate about the sport and have immense knowledge of every technique they go over. They share meticulous details of the techniques, which make all the difference when executing a throw or finishing a take down. They teach the "why" behind the "how". The sensei are also very considerate of each individual student and the needs that he or she may have. For instance, if someone is injured, they allow the person to practice something within their capabilities, while still letting the healthier students practice something more complicated. Also, they are aware of how advanced or novice each person is and works at the level that is right for them. If you're new, you aren't expected to do more than you can. If you're more experienced, then the sensei will help you achieve a deeper understanding of skills. They work with the class as a group, then break it down to the personal needs of each student. My son loves it. He comes home and practices what he's learned and I'm amazed at how much detail he remembers. His dad is deployed and I'm glad he has something to help distract him from that. He's excited to keep learning so that when his dad returns he can show him everything. As for me, I'm thrilled to have found a great judo gym. I specifically sought judo because to me, it's very practical and it's "gentle". It's also a nonstriking sport. I had a typical gym membership that was collecting dust and I wanted something that made me excited to leave the house to exercise, and this certainly does. When I started I was honestly the physically weakest I've ever been. I'd let my strength escape me and had become stagnant. Now that I have judo, I feel myself gaining back my strength and building cardio endurance, once again. I have to say that judo is definitely for everyone- young and old, male and female. I was seeking a judo gym for my son, who's about to be 8. He's one of the youngest in his class. His kids class is probably 2/3 boys and 1/3 girls- a larger amount of girls than other places. Besides the kids class, there's an adult class ages 14+, if I'm not mistaken. I decided to sign up and I'm in my 30's, a mother of three, and yet I'm hardly the oldest person there. There's a group of men, older than myself and there's also another mother of three, who attends. I've seen up to about a dozen adults attend one class. AND I want to point out that I commute from Natomas which can be anywhere from 40-45mins depending on traffic, but it's so worth the drive. There's even a family that comes all the way from Elk Grove just for this specific gym. This is a great place. I really like that they offer hour and a half long classes, 3 days a week, in the early evenings. Evenings are perfect, because I have enough time to head over from my location and my kids still have time to do homework and eat dinner, ahead of class. The fact that it is 3 days a week instead of two is nice, because it's an extra opportunity to practice and lets us have our money's worth. The price is admittedly a tad higher than I'd like to pay, but you're paying for quality, reliability and professionalism. They do offer family and military discounts as well. I definitely recommend this gym for judo. The sensei hold a vast knowledge of the art and are dedicated to teaching. It's a great environment with excellent, yet humble instruction. There's no young teachers peacocking around trying to flaunt their stuff, rather it's a group of sensei that work together for the best interests of the students. They are reliable and I truly believe that if you stick with them, they will help you achieve whatever your goals are. read more

Wonderful - Kind, smart, organized - teaching respect, strength, and personal growth! So, my teen son was invited to join a friend at Rocklin Judo on an open night. Okay, so I forced him to go, and he isn't planning on going back, but I was SO impressed by what I saw there, I wanted to share. First a big thank you to Sensei Ted for taking so much time with my son. What I saw while I watched were coaches who were organized and thoughtful in their teaching, this is obviously a labor of love for them. I saw them teaching their students how to be strong, successful in their sport, respectful, and kind and helpful. My son was helped by numerous of the less experienced students, and we all know that you learn by teaching back. The whole experience is calm and quiet, the students are given one on one time with the sensei, and are also given time with each other to practice and help each other. It is a wonderful gift that these coaches are giving to the next generation. read more
