Dr. Quirante was wonderful with our kids so five stars for her, but when we went to pay for our daughters glasses they tacked on an extra $500 even though we have insurance for "professional" fees. It was not transparent pricing and we felt pressured to pay for this just because our child needed glasses. It felt dishonest and the front desk staff would not be specific about what we paid for. Been coming here for over 4 years and I love Dr. Q. She's very professional and really cares for her patients I have no complaints there. Her front staff on the other hand, depending who you speak to over the phone ( if they even answer the phone because they love to let it ring) aren't the best. I've had to confirm my insurance with them so many times they either don't keep notes, aren't organized, or don't care because I spoke to 3 different people and gave them the same information only for them to call me back with misinformation upon confirming my appointment. Also, not all of them are the friendliest. some of them you can tell by their tone on the phone they're new and fresh and willing to help or have been there a while and want to clock out. Either way, because of the back and forth and inconsistent delivery of service I've switched to another office. I'd rather not go through the trouble and inconvenience. read more

I love this place. I told them exactly what I wanted, and wanted to use my VSP insurance with little to no out of pocket costs. I can't believe I didn't write this review years ago! Rockaway Beach Optometry is simply an awesome health care provider in the optical field. I have relied upon Dr. Quirante exclusively for over 27 years now. I have recommended her to friends and family due to the excellence of her skills, wonderful service and dedication to optimal patient outcomes. I have a very complex eyeglasses prescription that often requires multiple trips to their office to work out. It is in fact so complex that getting eye surgery would be really experimental. Translating this prescription into glasses and contact lenses takes real skill and patience. I have always felt a heartfelt gratitude for the excellence @RBO. They are my lifeline to functioning in a world which my eyes are the connection to smartphones, safety while driving, computers, work, basically everything! I could function without a doctor, drugstore, maybe even a supermarket, no eye doctor equals nothing works for me. The reason I jumped online is to document years of gratitude and to acknowledge the excellence of the newest member of the staff, Dr. Jennifer Wong. Honestly I wasn't too happy when I found out Dr. Q. wasn't available. I didn't take it personally, it was just a big deal to have to wait monthsforan available slot. When a cancelation in Dr Wong's calendar came up, as you can guess I gave the new Doc a chance. She's super awesome. A real Vision nerd who is interested to work on a complex case and smart enough to really make a difference in providing excellent care. Going from a seasoned proven pr to a new doc is a big deal for me. I've only had 2 good eye doctors in all these years of glasses and contacts. Now I have a third. I'm glad I gave her as shot. Dr Quirante is extremely thoughtful and thorough. I came in for a routine eye exam. I had been experiencing eye irritation from many hours of surfing. Dr Quirante took time to answer all my questions and detailed the results of all the tests. She took time to examine my eyes inside and out. I've been coming here since they were at their old location in Linda mar. I love all the doctors here, I started off with Doctor Q., and now I've been going to Doctor Lee for the last couple years. Whatever doctor you chose to see, you'll have a great, personable and knowledgeable experience. They have a noticeable company culture going on that everyone follows. No matter who you talk to, it's all about the client. They have the latest technology in all their equipment, thank goodness they don't have that eye air blowing machine that I hated as a child! (That alone makes them a winner in my eyes, pun intended). Great glasses selection, the techs are very helpful and truthful when you ask their opinion on the frames! I got a pretty funky pair of ray bans this year I can't wait to pick up! Anytime I've needed my glasses readjusted, they've been more than happy to do so when I drop in. I have been coming to Rockaway Beach Optometry for a year now after having my Lasik done. Both Dr. Quirante and Dr. Scheer are great!!! Friendly, professional, helpful, and totally honest. It's always easy for me to schedule an appointment with them and I have never had an issue with any of the staff like other reviewers have mentioned. At the place I used to go to, all the optometrists always seemed like they were in such a hurry!! They would rush through my exams and appointments... and on top of that, I felt like they judged me because I wore eye makeup daily while none of them did. I didn't really appreciate the disapproving "eye makeup is not that great for you it can lead to various eye infections" lectures either.. But I digress. The first time I met Dr. Quirante, I felt very very at ease. She walked in and the very first thing I noticed (laugh if you want, I know this is silly) she wears eye makeup! I knew right then and there I would be comfortable coming to Rockaway. No disapproving lectures, zero zip zilch nada. Dr. Quirante and Dr. Scheer have seen me throughout after Lasik check ups, pink eye (gross I know) and regularly scheduled exams. Thanks everybody for all the great work and your professionalism. I was looking for optometrists that accept VSP insurance. Spoke with Jerome on the phone and he was very pleasant and very nice to answer the few questions I had as a potential new patient. The standard practice to get more income (not just this practice but others) is to charge a "fitting fee" of $40-60 for contact lens. This forces you to alternate either glasses or contacts credit every other year. I thought my current ophthalmologist in San Mateo was being disreputable, but after calling around to different places, I guess this is common. I still don't understand if I have the premium eye insurance, why I should end up paying an extra $60 charged to me directly. read more

Several years ago I got glasses here, when they came in it was like looking through the bottom of a coke bottle. There was no way I could wear them. Their assistants told me that I was wearing them incorrectly and said they were too far up my nose. I had been wearing glasses for over 10yrs, had many glasses/contacts and have NEVER had the problem. They were extremely rude and kept insisting I was the problem. I refused the glasses and went to Dr. Susan Hsu instead. I told her what happened and she asked if they were polycarbonate lenses and I said yes, she then asked me if I get motion sick and I said yes. She told me she has found that people who get motion sick cannot wear polycarbonate lenses and it wasn't the way I was wearing the glasses but rather the type of lens. read more

If your looking for a new friend, Dr. Q is the way to go. If you are looking for a FULL SERVICE eye care practice then I would look elsewhere. I think Dr. Q is an OK eye doctor but she also is the business owner and the positive experience ends after you leave the exam room. Buying glasses at a small shop is never going to be cost effective but the upside is getting the service. That did not hold true based on my experience. In my opinion, having been wearing glasses for 40 years, they pushed low quality lens solutions (high margins for them) and had very little knowledge of the available products. However, there is no shortage of attitude from the people who are selling the frames and lens to the people running the front desk. I chose to spend my money somewhere else. read more

Like many others before me I have nothing but positive things to say about Dr Q. I have been a customer/patient for many years when she first opened in Rockaway, over 20 years ago. My kids and I have been regular customers all that time because of her kindness and expertise. My most recent experience with RBO was outstanding. Over the years, I have run into the occasional front desk person there that was difficult, but the service I have received there this year has been the total opposite. The staff has been professional, friendly & helpful. My most recent visits there this this summer & fall involved switching from glasses to contacts and for me, the learning curve was steep. After many visits the staff of RBO helped me find a solution that included contacts and glasses that fit my life. Anna was especially patient when I had a hard time with lenses and Kari made sure that my glasses looked nice and were in my budget. Dr. Q spent well over 40 min with me- answering questions & making helpful suggestions. There may be cheaper places out there but there is no place that has more personal care which to me is the real value. read more

Here's my advice to the OWNERS on training their staff: 1. Always acknowledge people when they walk in the door, *especially when it's obvious you see them.* DON'T obviously see someone and then quickly look away so you don't have to deal with them. 2. If you're busy, tell them you'll help them as soon as possible and THEN ignore them. We all understand busy. Personally, as a customer, I have no problem waiting for up to half-an-hour or coming back another time when it might be less busy. Treat customers with consideration. Give them a heads up. Ignoring them in hopes they go away means they will go away. 3. When you finally do turn your attention to the person that's gotten tired of being ignored, gotten tired of politely pretending to browse, AND has by now decided to position themselves in front of your desk staring at you, your first reaction should be an apology. Treating them as if you are trying to get rid of them as soon as possible is probably the worst thing to do at that point. *** Older lady, I would have had better service if, while standing in front of your desk, I had used my cell phone to call your store number.*** 4. If you don't have enough staff to answer the phones and help the customers at the same time (and it's not just poor labor division/poor time management), please create a voice message that says, "We are busy with customers right now, but please leave us your name and number and we'll get back to you as soon as we can." Let the the fifteen calls a minute go to voice mail and help the customers standing in front of you. Return the voice mails promptly and apologize. Explain how busy your store is. Doing this will actually make you look good. 5. If you examine the goings on in your showroom and find things efficient and well-managed, consider that you might be understaffed. IF the attitude of your reception is scaring off customers, consider whether the attitude comes from job dissatisfaction or ignorance of repercussions (i.e., loss of business). ***Owners, you do not sell five dollar trinkets. You sell medical devices costing hundreds of dollars. Each customer represents several hundred dollars plus recommendations to friends. Your selection of glasses isn't great. If people walk in, it's likely to do business, not to browse. You will not get my business. If your front showroom is so ineptly managed, what's your back work room like? You will not get my recommendation to friends and strangers. Your front office staff are perhaps poorly chosen, perhaps poorly paid, perhaps poorly trained--who can say, but I blame you. read more

I really, really like Dr. Q and Dr. Scheer a lot. My whole family sees them for their eye care. I have never had a bad experience with them. My son has been seeing Dr. Scheer since he was 17 months old and she's fabulous with him - he is now nearly 3 1/2 years old. This week, I had my check-up and things were great. Dr. Q was amazing as usual and took her time, answered my questions, explained things. Whenever I go in there, they seem to know who I am. It's nice. However, when it came to pick out my new frames, the guy who was helping me really was no help at all and even said something that I took as an insult. I told him that I only wanted to see the frames that were covered by my insurance. I always tell them that. He looked at the amount and said, "There isn't anything in that range that will fit your face." Um. Huh? My face is no bigger than most people's faces. The shape is of a normal shape that faces come in. Usually they send me over to the walls of glasses and have me pick out what I like and then we try them on, etc. He picked for me and seemed a bit frustrated that I didn't like the styles he chose for me. He actually said, "These are the only ones that would work. Try these." Um. Yeah. NO. so I found a pair I liked and were only $17 over after the discount for overage. He had already filled out the paperwork for the more expensive lenses with extras and with the amount that I wear my glasses, just basic, completely covered were fine. But he talked me into it and I ended up paying more. I do like the frames I picked out - from what I could tell while being dilated and fuzzy. But I felt like he really didn't want to help me , was in a rush to be done with me and he just wanted me to spend more. There weren't any other patients in there at the time I was there. So, the stars are for Dr. Scheer and Dr. Q. They are great - I hope I never have to leave them. The stars are for the women at the front desk. They were great! The guy helping me pick out frames... Dr. Scheer is by far the best optometrist I've ever seen. She noticed two chronic conditions that were never observed by previous optometrists. She was also able to easily and thoroughly answer a couple of questions that stumped both an optometrist and an ophthalmologist. She is also very personable and professional. Dr Q and staff are top notch...never pressuring, very honest, good at working around vision plans and the like. Good with various age groups. Pretty location (did I just say that), but they are moving to Linda Mar... strip mall, but close to my house, so no worries. Regardless.. give them 4.75... maybe if they served fresh coffee or something I'd go with the full 5!!! Great office, took my son there and they were very helpful in getting him his glasses and through his first "official" eye exam. Can't beat the location since we're local! They had initially charged me for some features on my son's glasses but it turned out that the insurance actually covered them so they immediately refunded my money without me having to chase them to do so. read more

I used to really like Rockaway Beach Optometry before Dr. Lee joined the practice. She replaced my original optometrist (Dr. Sheer). She seems nice enough but I have been suffering with her last prescription for the last year and very unhappy with it. When I picked up my glasses, I explained to her that the new prescription was worse then my previous one. I could actually see *better* with my two-year old glasses than the new ones she prescribed. She had a very medical/academic answer which still did not help me understand why the new glasses sucked and the old ones worked. Since then I have even tried on my sisters glasses and can see better with someone else's glasses then my own! I think Dr. Lee is not a good doctor and/or not a good communicator. I am happy to have found another office for my future vision needs. read more

I've been going to Rockaway Beach Optometry for about 7 years now and my original optometrist was Dr. Sheer. When Dr Sheer left, she was replaced by Dr. Lee who I've seen several times at this point. Dr.Lee is patient, extremely thorough with her exam and takes her time answering all of the (many) questions I have. I wear contact lens and also wear glasses occasionally. Dr.Lee gave me lots of different options (as my vision is changing) and explained all of them. I would highly recommend any of the optometrists at this office (I've been seen by Dr. Quirante before). I also never have a problem making an appointment and in fact can usually get in within a week (or two at the most) from when I call. Staff is also equally helpful and always take the time to explain the breakdown of costs including what my insurance covers. read more

I discussed my family history of Macular Degeneration with Dr. Jennifer Quirante, and I was so impressed with the amount of time she spent reviewing my optic scans with me showing me all of the areas of the scans and how they related to Macular Degeneration. I felt like she was in no rush at all to move on to her next patient which I really appreciated. The care I received from Ana to help select my new eye glasses was phenomenal also. I've been going to Rockaway Beach Optometry for years, in their current and previous locations. Our whole family still makes the drive even after we moved to a different county. We keep returning because of the excellent care we get from Dr. Quirante and Dr. Scheer. They are both personable, caring, and thorough. In the past, I've been to other optometrists who rush through the exam and head out the exam room door as soon as they can. Not so with these eye docs! To me, the most important quality is that my eyes are receiving the care and analysis they need. Customer service is also very important to me and I've only had positive experiences with the staff. We've ordered eyeglasses and contact lenses and they've arrived on time and to specification. Also, a bonus to me is that they're in a shopping center with a million other stores, so it is a convenient place to get your errands done! read more

I was hoping that this was going to be a great place. It wasn't. We have had nothing but problems with our orders. We decided to give this place a try because of the good reviews and in particular their pediatric services--we have 3 kids. This may be more complaining about their customer service than a review of their services, but I thought I would share my experience and you can take away what you like. And yes, I joined yelp.com just for this review. Our first visit was over a year ago with kid #1. Great exam, and our 8y.o. was quite at ease with the doctor. We had quick service on the inexpensive pair of glasses (still $200) then horrible service on the the second pair of glasses--sport glasses with custom lenses. You'd think at $400 they'd try and get your order right. Not only did the wrong lenses arrive and get put in the glasses, but no one in-house verified the accuracy of the completed pair to our original order. How bad is the QA when you can't even tell the lenses aren't getting dark in the sun? Second visit, kid #2. Great exam. My 6 y.o. didn't have any problems with the exam and was made to feel comfortable. I'm now thankful we didn't need to get him a pair of glasses Third visit; kid #1 again. Great exam but perhaps the suggested Optomap was a bit much--it's still an unproven tool even though in some cases where retinal issues are a concern, it may prove to be an asset. The cynic in me thinks there's nothing like a new gizmo at the office to increase cash-flow. On this last visit, his prescription changed (as expected) and we wanted to replace all his lenses although only one set was going to be covered by insurance. His prescription changed enough in each eye that it was important. We paid for both pairs *before* they were made/ordered. We are told that pair #1 would be done on Saturday. We say we may not be back in time on Saturday but for sure we need them on Tuesday--they are closed Sun-Mon. We can't leave both pair as he's playing sports all that weekend. My wife walks in the door on Saturday late afternoon and of course the lenses and glasses aren't done. They actually told her since maybe we wouldn't be back on Saturday, that they didn't complete the work. Nice assumption. Oh, but at least they told us the second pair of lenses would be in on Tuesday when we come back and could be fit then. Fast forward to Tuesday. We're told that the wrong lenses were ordered and that they won't fit into the glasses. Really?? Did you check to see what type of lens you needed *before* ordering them?? We are told "Sorry, but your other glasses are done." I'm thinking didn't this happen last year?? Fast forward to today--another week later. But we were smart and called before we drove over. Guess what?? Wrong lenses AGAIN. They sat on *not* calling us for 2 days. We were told they can't call everyone and they are understaffed. Really?? How should that make a difference to me?? Aren't you a business?? Don't you think you should try to be good at it?? Listen, the doctors may be great and in our experience they were. Neither of my two kids who visited them had any trepidation or issues during the exam and i was quite happy about that. Kids get scared. If you do go here to have you eyes checked by the ophthalmologists, think twice about buying your glasses from them if you want some added "features" to your lenses. You may be in for a wait... we've got another week before we find out if they've ordered the correct items. I'm not holding my breath. Their optometry services are seriously lacking. My wife and I planned on using their services this month for our exams and glasses. We usually spend an additional $800 to $1000 out of pocket for things not covered by insurance. They won't be getting our business after this experience and in addition they will be losing any future business our three kids would have generated. They will not be getting any recommendations either. I'm a local to Pacifica and try to keep my business within the city when I can. It's unfortunate when I come across a business that doesn't seem to perform to at least my minimum standard. I don't mind spending extra money for customer service--in fact I will always spend more money (for similar items) if the customer service is exceptional. I got my husband a pair of expensive sunglasses. He took them to Rockaway Beach Optometry to have prescription lenses put into them. They lost our glasses, then said we never brought them , and refused to compensate us.
