After years of driving by almost every day and hearing how AMAZING it is in almost every season, I decided to finally check it out. Picked the PERFECT fall day, while the leaves were still PEAK, and first drove then got out and wandered through some of the most gorgeous NATURE the "Field of Springs" has to offer. Jagged cliffs and rock formations, an amazing variety of trees, birds a plenty, and a lovely hidden waterfall are only the most "obvious" gems to be discovered here. The final resting place of generations of Springfielders (?) is surprisingly TEEMING with LIFE and WELL worth a visit if you're in the area. I believe they offer tours, which I might just have to investigate, so I'm able to see more than what I saw on my quick, only SLIGHTLY creeeeped out recent visit... Both funerals were with "funeral honors" consisting of the playing of TAPS by a ceremonial bugle, folding of the American Flag, and the presentation of the flag to the next of kin. Dayton National Cemetery has their own Honor Squad available to augment the Department of Defense personnel performing military funeral honors, by firing a 3-round rifle volley. Which was included in both funerals. I especially like the peaceful, rhythmic layout of the cemetery. Attributed to Chaplain (and Capt.) William B. Earnshaw, the cemetery construction is the lofty Soldiers' Monument around which faceted, concentric rows of graves are arranged. Two features found here are common to many older national cemeteries. There are two ornamental 19th-century cannons located at the base of the Soldiers' Monument, and seven "Bivouac of the Dead" verse tablets. [This information is from their website.] I also found it interesting the cemetery was connected to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (NHDVS) [which served many uses including a hospital] by a tunnel in 1870 aka as the "tunnel of death." The arched tunnel connecting the cemetery and the hospital featured rustic stone and a metal gate. I didn't know they offered this: "Avenue of Flags program: A deceased Veteran's flag may be donated to the cemetery at any time to be flown along the "Avenue of Honor." The full complement of flags is flown on Memorial Day throughout the entire cemetery. On Veterans Day and the Fourth of July holidays, the flags will line the main entrance of the cemetery along Wisconsin Avenue. Flag donors will receive a letter and Certificate of Appreciation for their donation." This is a well-organized, well-laid out cemetery that is very honoring of our Veterans.

Even tho the crowd was large, Cemetery staff quickly moved the line of cars along so everyone was able to find parking. The ceremony itself was beautiful. Veterans, their military spouses, POW's who didn't come back from the war and members of each branch of the armed forces were recognized and honored. Following the wreath ceremony spectators where invited to help laying wreath onto the graves.

I could describe it, but did not realize finding a funeral home knowledgeable of the process would be such a task especially at 2 am. The social worker and I Googled a few places and waited for call backs. One location called back and were very derogatory about the cemetery that my mother had chosen, which quickly left an extremely sour taste in my mouth. However, though they were negative and answered very few of my questions, the funeral director did mention there is a Green Burial Council that certifies funeral homes in green burial and their website has a list of certified funeral homes across the country. As we scrolled, we found Routsong. The social worker called as I being the nerd I am looked for online reviews. They were a funeral home I wasn't familiar with nor had anyone in the family used and at 2am I definitely couldn't make a Facebook post for intel as mom needed a place to go ASAP. From the initial conversation to handling the final payment, Routsong has been a godsend. Through the process of planning my mother's celebration of life, I worked closely with Sam Routsong. I found him to be extremely helpful, personable, and knowledgeable. He also helped with working with the insurance companies and cemetery on my behalf, which took a lot off my plate! Planning a memorial is akin to planning a wedding there are so many minute details that can easily be overlooked, but Sam made sure nothing was overlooked and communication was flowing. This was especially helpful as I can be a little OCD when it comes to planning things. He made sure I was able to visit the florist and gave the final ok on the flowers for the memorial. He "officiated" mom's grave side service and he was tremendously attentive to myself and the guest at mom's actual memorial... even to the point where people were like "do I smell cookies baking?" And they did and were served warm cookies and other refreshments as the visitation progressed. Even everyone who attended the memorial were impressed by the service and venue. I cannot speak highly enough of all that Sam and the Routsong family did for me during this difficult time. And I know you want to know the answer to the million dollar question!!! COST... Though I've never paid for a funeral nor memorial before, I found them to be extremely reasonable and accommodating. Whether you have a set budget or the sky's the limit they want to ensure your "vision" is executed without "burying" you in debt. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Routsong family when it comes time for your loved one to transition!

My family has been part of the fabric of New Carlisle for over 100 years. Generations have used this funeral home. The service provided for my mother failed in nearly every way. Trostle's mismanagement ruined her graveside service. Nobody was scheduled to assist for the urn to be buried at the cemetery. We had to come back a week later to bury her. It's been over two years now with multiple phone calls and her death date is still not engraved on the tombstone! As I am writing this, it's Memorial Day weekend... When we needed things explained several times, because it is hard to focus when you are grief stricken, he was always very patient and understanding. Walter was extremely professional. His experience and knowledge of what needed to be done every step of the way was a relief and weight off of our shoulders. Once all the arrangements had been made, we felt at ease in knowing everything would be taken care of. They spent time getting to know us and learning about our Father so they could help us in honoring his life. The Funeral Associate, Sheri, helped us write the Obituary and she took care of getting it published in the paper and on their online Obituaries page. A beautiful Memorial video was made from our pictures of our Dad, it was thoughtfully made and was very touching. They took extra care and consideration to make sure our wishes were met and that everything went smoothly. I highly recommend Adkins Funeral Home because the compassionate care and professional services help the family through an extremely sorrowful process in a way that gives peace and closure.
