What is green burial? That is the first thing the Hospice social worker asked as she offered to…read moreassist in finding a funeral home to take mom's body. I could describe it, but did not realize finding a funeral home knowledgeable of the process would be such a task especially at 2 am. The social worker and I Googled a few places and waited for call backs. One location called back and were very derogatory about the cemetery that my mother had chosen, which quickly left an extremely sour taste in my mouth. However, though they were negative and answered very few of my questions, the funeral director did mention there is a Green Burial Council that certifies funeral homes in green burial and their website has a list of certified funeral homes across the country. As we scrolled, we found Routsong. The social worker called as I being the nerd I am looked for online reviews. They were a funeral home I wasn't familiar with nor had anyone in the family used and at 2am I definitely couldn't make a Facebook post for intel as mom needed a place to go ASAP. From the initial conversation to handling the final payment, Routsong has been a godsend. Through the process of planning my mother's celebration of life, I worked closely with Sam Routsong. I found him to be extremely helpful, personable, and knowledgeable. He also helped with working with the insurance companies and cemetery on my behalf, which took a lot off my plate! Planning a memorial is akin to planning a wedding there are so many minute details that can easily be overlooked, but Sam made sure nothing was overlooked and communication was flowing. This was especially helpful as I can be a little OCD when it comes to planning things. He made sure I was able to visit the florist and gave the final ok on the flowers for the memorial. He "officiated" mom's grave side service and he was tremendously attentive to myself and the guest at mom's actual memorial... even to the point where people were like "do I smell cookies baking?" And they did and were served warm cookies and other refreshments as the visitation progressed. Even everyone who attended the memorial were impressed by the service and venue. I cannot speak highly enough of all that Sam and the Routsong family did for me during this difficult time. And I know you want to know the answer to the million dollar question!!! COST... Though I've never paid for a funeral nor memorial before, I found them to be extremely reasonable and accommodating. Whether you have a set budget or the sky's the limit they want to ensure your "vision" is executed without "burying" you in debt. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Routsong family when it comes time for your loved one to transition!

Among others, I found the final resting places of the Wright Brothers with their family, and first Lieutenant Patterson, after whom the Wright-Patterson Air Force base are named, along with Charles Kettering (as in the Dayton suburb Kettering), and humor writer Erma Bombeck. The grounds are immaculate, the markers are thoughtfully maintained and the whole place feels like a quiet blend of history and reflection that rewards anyone who takes the time to wander. Climbing towards the upper ridge gives you one of the best surprises here, a clear view of the Dayton skyline rising in the distance through the trees, which adds a nice sense of place to the visit. Woodland Cemetery is large enough to explore without feeling overwhelming, and the mix of shade, rolling hills, and historic figures makes it a genuinely enjoyable stop whether you're here for local history or just a peaceful walk. I would highly recommend them if you really hated a family members and want to make sure they get the worst treatment in death. The goal is just do the bare bones of cremation to get the worst service possible. They will refer to your loved (or hated one) by the wrong pronoun even after several corrections to the fact. They will let you watch your loved one being literally shoved quickly into an incinerator like garbage. The assistants will wear fun holiday masks to their funeral. They will completely ignore you and not let you know where the remains of your loved one is for weeks. I would say this is the perfect funeral home for those you hate but if you have someone you loved and cared about go somewhere else.

We met with Melanie who was compassionate, caring, and explained everything thoroughly. We felt as though we were a part of her family. Dad's service was very nice, and the funeral home is spacious and beautiful. We were able to bring in donuts for the visitation, and coffee and water were provided. Even after the service, the funeral home went above and beyond. A woman posted horrible words and death wishes to my mother (who also nearly lost her life in the house fire). We contacted the funeral home who promptly removed the terrible comments. Unfortunately, the woman and her mother continue to harass this wonderful business, posting negative reviews and demanding that they post their disgusting comments on my father's memorial wall. We never imagined that we'd have to deal with such tasteless behavior, and we're mortified that Melanie and Sara have to deal with this. Overall, this is a very caring and compassionate company that genuinely cares about the family and their loved one's final wishes.

I was skeptical at first because of horror stories you hear about some funeral homes price gouging and taking advantage of people during their time of grieving. I quickly realized, after meeting the owners and staff here, they care about meeting my family's needs. They care about keeping expenses reasonable and fair. They care about allowing my family to properly grieve. The visitation and funeral service went smoothly and Morris Sons made my family feel as comfortable as possible during this time. The loss of a loved one is always a difficult time for the family, but if I'm faced with another funeral planning, I will definitely choose Morris Sons again.

Each flag represents one life lost in service at Old Greencastle Cemetery. Nearly 200 years later, this community remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. Old Greencastle Cemetery is considered one of the oldest cemeteries in Dayton. For Memorial Day, Sons of the Union and Veterans of the Civil War honored some of their ancestors who fought for the Union during the Civil War. This annual tradition goes back more than 15 decades and has been held at Old Greencastle Cemetery for the last 10 years. State Rep. Phil Plummer (OH-40) says it's about honoring the sacrifice made by those buried at Greencastle. Sons of the Union and Veterans of the Civil War say this tradition will continue as well as the efforts to clean up and preserve the cemetery property.
