Small gem, home style cooking. Traditonal plates and lunch specials. Great offer Monday-Friday. Large soup, entree and drink. $9. Cons, tight location, parking availability and bathroom space.

Serious cravings for tostones (fried plantains) led me to this hole-in the wall Latin American restaurant.I was not disappointed!Along with the tostones,I also decided to try their lunch special(which comes with a soup and an entree). The beef soup was a highly satisfying broth in generous quantity. It had all the right spices along with plantains and yuca and whatnot. The chicken entree served with rice and salad had fall-off-the bone tender chicken in gravy(though I didnt really care much for the gravy itself). The salad was crunchy and the veggies seemed really fresh. But the star of the meal was the hot(REALLY HOT) green sauce on the table of which I added copious amounts to my soup and rice.It just made everything even better.I am not entirely sure what its made of(green chillies is my best guess) but its really delish(if you are into spicy things). The seating is pretty cramped and this really does not seem to be much of a sit-down place but getting take-out is certainly worth the effort of getting here.I think they deliver too(but havent done that yet).

"Yay! I'm a fan." ok... for several reasons: 1st * -This is only my second Yelp review... but I'm the FIRST to review Rocio's. 2nd * -It's walking distance from my place... 3rd * -It's affordable... 4th * -It's tasty! ...oh! ...and I can bring-in a six-pack from the liquor store across the street! --but the star for that gets cancelled out due to their TINY restroom. Here's the scoop: This little Ecuadorean restaurant is a small (they have 6 tables), hole-in-the-wall, mom-n-pop type place... the kind of place you really only go to if you live nearby. ...but that's only because it's hard-to-find and easy-to-miss (even tho it's on one of the busiest streets in JC... thousands of cars whizz by every day). You almost only know about it if you live in the area. I usually make it into this place 2 or 3 times a month on Sundays to have some soothing comfort food... trying to self-medicate the hangover from an all-night dance party in the city! ...but that's a whooole other story. They have an $8 daily (almuerzo) special that changes... well... daily. Last time I was there, the special consisted of two parts... First they brought me a large bowl of "Sopa de Menestron" (a latin take on minestrone soup). Next...was my plate with a small portion of grilled chicken breast, spanish style rice, and salad. (I posted pics). They have mostly seafood dishes on their simple one-page menu. --ceviches --seafood soups --fish fillets --shrimp dishes --churrasco I've tried several different things and all have had great authentic Ecuadorean flavors and spices. The JSQ area is slowly changing... several new condo buildings and the new Journal Square Towers! ...it's places like ROCIO'S that give a gentrified area FLAVOR and charm, tho... let's keep 'em around. ...sometimes we just need to get off our high-horses (and air-conditioned SUV's --seriously, 'cus you're gonna have to walk here) and try out a place that might be out of our usual taste palate. GIVE 'EM A SHOT!!! -- and put some of that spicey green stuff they have on the tables on your rice!

The Ricotta Gnocchi came after about 15 minutes and was deliciously creamy, and cooked perfectly where it was both tender and provided a chewy texture which we found enjoyable. The portion was on the smaller side which we were informed by our server. It also looked very pretty as well! The duck breast and the faroe island salmon both came after another 20 minutes, which took quite a while since they weren't really that busy at the time. The duck breast was tender with a crispy skin that was paired deliciously with its cherry jus, so I highly recommend getting that! However, the salmon was overcooked and quite bland compared to the other two, which was quite disappointing and left us feeling hungry despite spending over 100 for 3 dishes. Although we enjoyed some of their selections, the high price tag did not really justify both the ricotta gnocchi appetizer-like portion, and the underwhelming and bland faroe island salmon. The Roxy has potential of being amazing, so I hope they take into consideration this review to continue to improve and change up their menu. Their menu is ever evolving, so they're definitely worth a visit if their updated menu appeals to you! Thank you for reading and best of luck! (:

My order was entirely different than last time and I think I got the perfect spread, if I do say so myself. We started with the Mixto Aguachiles Verde. It's a large portion great for sharing, with a generous amount of seafood, and super bright and moderately spicy. It's quite refreshing and such a good bite on a hot day. You eat it with the crispy tostada shells they provide. The Tostada La Consentida might have been my favorite bite. The tuna was super thin, clean, and fresh, the avocado was soft and creamy, and the macha salsa was actually spicy and had some crunchy bits. It was the perfect combination of good flavor, good texture, and uniqueness. You have to get Camarones Zarandeados A La Parilla while you're here. I inhaled these! The shrimp were grilled to perfection. The smokiness mixed with a squeeze of lime were to die for! The Craken Taco was also a good try and very satisfying with the chihuahua cheese. I was so surprised that the Costra Taco was might favorite of the three considering it's a seafood spot but don't sleep on the ribeye! All in all, this meal actually hit the spot and I left happy & satisfied.

And as a bonus, it has not yet been "discovered" by the Yelp Elite / food influencer crowd (besides yours truly). The Alexandrian Style Shrimp was huge and delicious, but the Grilled Branzino (and really, any whole grilled fish) is the big, belting diva of the menu and one you should not miss. Whole, ground spices are packed into every bite care of lovely marinade, and your teeth will rejoice at how tender the meat is. Entrees all come with generous, complimentary portions of salad, tahini and pita, as well as lots of fluffy rice, so you can't walk away hungry. The prices are on the higher side, sadly--it seems nowhere is immune to inflation these days--but at least you'll get a ton of bang for your buck.

The space is small, about 8 tables, with dated, seventies decor, complete with plastic on the tables. Only one woman in the kitchen. We had the grilled Orata, which came with rice, salad, babaganoush and tahini sauce, side of eggplants with peppers in tomato sauce and the Alexandria style shrimp. Everything was fresh, the fish grilled to perfection and the shrimp well-seasoned. There is also a sandwich menu, but it was not available that day. This place as all of the elements I love in small businesses; no pretention, no gimmicks and no "fusion"...just authentic, simple, home made food, from kitchen straight to my stomach with no orchestra and fireworks. My only gripe is that the prices are high but given that food costs have risen so quickly in the last few years, I completely understand.

At the best part, selection and offerings do not disappoint. A bright and welcoming space, the store is stocked with various prepackaged goods, including unique items, such as black cuttlefish gnocchi. We didn't have a reservation, and walked in. Luckily we were able to grab a table. But the issue was that it was extremely hot and humid inside. it was like their AC was broken or simply wasn't turned on. The service was also pretty bad, the waiters forgot orders and or took a while to stop by our table. The biggest reason i gave it 2.5 out of 5 stars is the price of food, vs the quality and or quantity.... again, i didn't pay, but i ended up getting a lobster roll with some chips for $35 bucks, and the lobster roll was severely lacking. It was small, and i didn't get a lot of lobster meat on the roll. If i had to pay for it, i'd be pissed. i will have to say, the views are nice, if you are able to sit outside.

The last time we came, the young man serving us was extremely attentive and professional, which is exactly why we decided to return. Unfortunately, this second visit was very disappointing. The steak frites was excellent, but the service was lacking. The young lady serving our table seemed far more focused on her cellular phone than attending guests. It took quite a while for our order to be taken, forgot half our order, and we repeatedly had to ask for empty plates to be cleared as additional courses were brought to the table. A restaurant can have great food, but attentive service and proper management matter just as much. We hope management takes this feedback seriously because this place has a lovely atmosphere and we would genuinely like to keep supporting a local neighborhood restaurant.
