When I was there, they had a DJ playing, and it added energy without being too loud or overwhelming. The Service was very good, the waiter answered and helped with all our questions. The food was absolutely amazing really flavorful and well done. Just be a little prepared that most dishes come in smaller portions. But the quality definitely makes up for it. I ordered the paella, and it's easily enough for two or even three people and it was well worth it. Really delicious. The drinks were also definitely worth trying while you're there. The only thing I wasn't big on was the desserts they didn't quite live up to the rest of the meal. But overall, great atmosphere, excellent food, and a fun experience. I'd definitely come back.

This is going to be a longgggggg one :…read more I called and asked if a reservation was needed and I was told NO . I also explained it was my boyfriend's birthday and I wanted everything to go smooth . We go in and at first we were going to sit outside since they have a beautiful back space with a koi fish pond and real nice decor . But there were mosquitoes, so we decided to sit inside . So once inside I asked to sit at a table with 4 chairs even tho there were only 2 of us and I was told NO ( he than Goes on to explain that they don't have anymore space etc) . Just keep in mind the room was pretty big and more than half of the tables were EMPTY . And let me highlight THEY STAYED EMPTY FOR THE ENTIRE 2 hours we were there . Also I ordered the grilled scallops and was told it came with 3 sides . However once my boyfriend placed his order ( just 2 appetizers I was then told that my dinner only came with 1 side instead of 3 ). Honestly that makes no sense to me , you either get 3 sides or you don't . You mean to tell me that unless the other person orders a whole dinner I can't have the sides I need ? That's ridiculous because I would have paid for them individually, however I wasn't even given that choice , since I only ordered one dinner I could only have one side . ( I would have paid for the extra sides but then again I wasn't given that option) = UNACCEPTABLE. So I can't sit at a table that has been empty and remained empty the entire time I was there . And I can't have extra sides even if I pay for them . Makes no sense to me . The food was well seasoned , however I felt like it absolutely lacked presentation . It's like they just threw the stuff in your plate and that was it :( The place is beautiful , specially the outdoor seating . Aside from all the bugs ( that's not really their fault ) . But the fact I was denied a table in an entire room that basically had NO ONE IN IT for the whole time I was there and the fact I couldn't even order what I wanted ( even if I paid for side dishes ) because I didn't order two dinners is absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!! Such a shame because I would have gone back for the food even tho there wasn't any presentation . But the service is honestly by far the worst service I ever had at a place in a long time . So sad , disappointing and it makes no sense . Go to other places in town , this is really not worth your time , service is really BAD !!!!

Amazing! Came here for a lovely anniversary dinner :)…read more This place has that old school Bayonne charm. Plus the outside porch area is cute and nautical, has a water feature with koi fish. The inside is rustic, and coastal themed. The servers were very nice and attentive. The portions huge and the prices right. We split the combo for 2 that was $54 and came with a huge lobster tail, filet mignon, chicken and grilled shrimp. Plus three sides which are rice, green beans and broccoli and home made potato chips. Also per person include soup or salad! And they bring over warm rolls, which were excellent and crunchy on outside and fluffy on inside. The potato chips tasted so fresh, lightly seasoned and delicious. The fish and meat were cooked perfectly. The steak had a nice char and sear on the outside. We got the tartufo for dessert and it was delicious, super creamy ice cream and decadent chocolate shell. Definitely want to come back! Great value, service and quality of food. 5/5.

Then the appetizer- we had the shrimp with garlic sauce, the chorizo and the grilled octopus. All 3 as if we were in Spain. Entree's all were accompanied by vegetables rice and chips. We had the cod, red snapper and halibut. Then we split a chicken Piaya - the house specialty. Having had piaya in the past it seems to be overwhelming rice but this was not. Great balance of ingredients sauce flavor and rice. We tried a couple of the sauces on the side for the fish and while excellent- they were not necessary as the fish was excellent on its own. We also enjoyed a flan for dessert and cafe and cappuccino. Considering the amount of food we had and leftovers I thought the price was quite reasonable. All servers and matre di were dressed in formal black and white and the room was a formal dining area. Truly enjoyable. We'll be back!

It was a large salad. Very tasty. Could have been more chilled. It was cool at best. I ordered the Paella Marinera. It was huge. Definitely shareable. Came with a half lobster, muscles, clams, and squid. It was really tasty. I usually have a pretty big appetite, but I could not finish it. After dinner, we order the flan and the pumpkin cheesecake. Both were good. Service was excellent. Multiple people handling the table and very attended. I highly recommend. Well visit next time I'm in the area

After nearly 40 years, I finally returned to Spanish Tavern in Newark, and I am happy to say it is…read moreevery bit as wonderful as I remembered. From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and ensure everything was perfect throughout our meal. My wife ordered the salmon topped with crab, and it was outstanding--tender, perfectly cooked, and a very generous portion. I had shrimp with pepper sauce was equally impressive, packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The sides of fresh vegetables, yellow rice, and the homemade potato chips complemented the meal beautifully. Dessert was the perfect ending to a fantastic evening. The flan was simply incredible--smooth, rich, and full of flavor. The chocolate cake was absolutely decadent and worth every bite. Spanish Tavern offers plenty of convenient parking and a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes it ideal for a date night, family dinner, or special occasion. What impressed me most is that after four decades, this restaurant continues to deliver outstanding food, exceptional service, and a memorable dining experience. Some places come and go. Spanish Tavern has stood the test of time, and for good reason. It remains a truly special place to enjoy great food and even better company. Highly recommended! I'd rate it 5 stars without hesitation.

They had a decent amount of servers and one or two parties at the bar when we sat down, but no one else came in to get seated which was interesting given how many tables they had and how nicely everything was set. The vibe of this restaurant felt a little more upscale than we expected so staff were in black tie dress, but since no one else was there, we didn't feel too out of place. Menu had a good selection of dishes and we shared a few for the entire meal. Taste was fine, solid and decently priced. I enjoyed the paella. Overall, not a bad experience, just felt a little eerie due to the lack of patrons. We enjoyed it nonetheless and wish Spanish Tavern more success!
