Staff was not the most personable and it took a while to get their attention, but overall the experience was very positive. The game was on, so I was happy to have a pint while watching football. Lovely views of the Grand Union and when the weather is balmy (or at least not raining) there is ample space (tables, chairs) outside right on the canal-side. We even had the chance to spot three canal boats docked up right by the pub so this makes a great spot to bring kids too. Inside, the pub had lovely beams and felt quite airy. We were there in the evening and each table had a candle, giving the pub quite a cozy feel. Though there were lots of families and it was busy, we were able to secure a comfy window table. The service was very helpful and the food tasty. We enjoyed lamb shank (beautifully cooked but could have come with more than the sliver of potatoes Dauphinoise) and a fish pie (which was loaded with fish). We barely had room for dessert but admirably made space for a fresh bread and butter pudding, a gorgeous and ever so chocolaty brownie with ice cream and a toffee pudding. All lovely. We could even wash it all down with a double espresso. Highly recommended for families and groups as there's lots of space but we did see some couples there too. Overall, a very pleasant experience with lovely views.

The rooftop was a full and a little tight, so we took a very nice seat in a corner (with 2 wide windows) a floor below. Service was friendly, albeit a little slow in spots. Gayle's drink was a Hugo Spritz, while mine was a pint of Youngs Special (Extra Strong Bitter). We shared a Garden Board (Wild garlic hummus, Davidstow Cheddar, Bath soft cheese, Long Clawson Stilton, cherry tomatoes, radishes, celery, pear, garden chutney, foccaccia bread) which was just the right amount of food for both of us. We really enjoyed the ambiance and comfort that this place offered. It also gave us a lot of time to discuss various scenes in the play, the Richard Hawley soundtrack, and the beauty of the theatre itself.

First of all "the rules" aren't clear, for example is the same menu available on every floor? Second of all the welsh rarebit was a bad kind of surprise and not at all what welsh rarebit is supposed to be (I am a tourist so I am basing this on an internet search). Third our server was near-mass shooting/suicide level of stress when we arrived. She absolutely did her job but I could tell that the slightest mistake would send her over the edge. Not sure why, the pub didn't seem to be the high-stress kind of place. Fourth, the sign outside clearly indicated a Young's pub and we were not offered a cask ale option of any sort, which I didn't understand, was this a rule? No cask ales above the first floor?

Surprisingly it's not just full of city types and there's a smart, yet informal atmosphere inside that is definitely preferable to some of the bars along here. We usually pop in as a last minute decision, often to wait for people in the group who are late meeting us before we all head off to somewhere more our style along Brick Lane. It's a pretty traditional pub (all dark brown wood and studded seats) so has a fair list of beers and ales and the bar staff have always been welcoming and quick to serve us. Upstairs is the eating area where I once had fairly good sausages and mash for only £5.95. If you're standing outside, look along the side of the wooden frames where you can find little buttons that activate the mini heaters overhead.

For my meal, I ordered the vegetable/sweet potato pie with a side of steamed veggies. I had a side off grilled chicken as well and it was bland and dry. My mom ordered the fish and chips and loved her meal. I snagged a bite and will say it was delicious. If you want to eat upstairs, make a reservation a few days in advance. The seating area up there is small and fills up fast. Otherwise, you can sit downstairs in the pub area. Perfect Yorkshire pudding and the classic mashed potatoes. Ordered a side of chips too because you can never have enough potatoes! They were true Brit style! Thick and crispy. Now that I got that bit out of the way, the pub is a charming one located off of Oxford Street in Mayfair. There are two floors of tables and booths to enjoy pints and cocktails. Like many pubs over here, you order and pay from the bar as you go and then enjoy at one of the tables if there is space available. Their Aperol spritz was solid and I enjoyed that immensely. My missus enjoyed her gin and tonic as we relaxed with tennis playing on the flat screens. The toilets are upstairs if you need to use, which is smart for the pub since if you are trying to ensure no one is just using them without paying for a drink, that is good placement.
