We weren't sure if we were going to make it for lunch or dinner due to jet lag so we hadn't booked a table but took a chance and walked in anyway. We were lucky to get a spot on a busy Sunday, we don't recommend you take a chance and book ahead. Tons of people were having the Sunday roast and it looked incredible, but I wasn't that hungry so I had a beef and mushroom pie instead. It was delicious and super filling. Instead of a pint I had an espresso martini to try to wake me up, it didn't disappoint. Definitely worth a visit on a Sunday or anyway. Great pub with outstanding food.

Third, the staff- from the time we entered to the time we left- were all friendly. We ate in the upstairs dining room, which has lovely high ceilings and a large room with dark wood tables and typical pub seating. The kitchen is upstairs and we got a table next to it but surprisingly and pleasantly discovered later we didn't smell like food. Now the drink. My husband and I split two bottles of a bottle cider, a peach flavour I think, and it was quite good. Lots of drinking options including cocktails. Now the food: As a veghead, I was happy at the variety of pizza, main and tapas options. The food prices are a bit high, especially for the tapas, so I ordered the least expensive veg main, the broad bean purée and broccoli rabe flatbread. My husband got a spicy pizza with nduja sausage. My dish arrived fairly quickly and I was confused at first; I thought it was the wrong order. It comes as a soup with stewed rabe and two pieces of crispy bread like pappadam. This is not how I envisioned flatbread: food atop a slice of dough like pizza. The waiter was so concerned and offered to take it back but I hate food waste so I plowed in. It was actually good- not fantastic- with a very thick purée and the sautéed rabe blending well. There is a lot of rabe and the constant chewing can get a bit tiresome but overall I liked the dish although I think it's better on a cold night as it's served piping hot. The flatbread pieces are bland. My husband said his pizza was good but much spicier than he expected. I nibbled on the pizza crusts and liked the chewy dough. One of the best experiences of the night was the waiter TBH. His attention to customer service- asking how our food was, if we wanted anything else, etc- was as if we were back in the US. I felt I had entered a country warp! SO rare in London to have that good service!

"After feeling rather peckish after a six mile circular walk, we found this delightful place. The building had been there for 200 years but after being closed for six years had just been re-opened. The menu was varied. My wife and I chose whitebait followed by crab risotto and coffee. Our friends had fish and chips, topped with a local beer from Tring. The staff, who were mostly South African, were most welcoming and the setting was lovely rounding off a quintessentially English summer's day." Thanks dad, time to cultivate my love for trekking the bucolic pastures our great nation!

Only stopped in for a few pints, have not tried the food yet - but what I saw of it it looked pretty tasty - not gastro pub but not your brake bros frozen crap either. Also they are opening a deli on the premises, selling locally produced sausages, meat etc. So 4 stars for now on the basis it looks very promising - this may increase to 5 once I have sampled the food! p.s. Peroni on draught - always a good sign.

Highlights are definitely the Marvel wall and don't even get me started on the Elvis toilet and the female icon wall in the toilet (yey). Sadly, we didn't have a full meal but we did try the chips and cheese and the apple crumble which we're both good. Shout out to their creamy homemade mayonnaise, seriously give it a try! I will be back to try their roast and spend another merry Sunday afternoon here.

Even from the…read moreoutside it is easy to appreciate the atmosphere the owners have cleverly created as large round windows are filled with candles and framed by purple velvet drapes. Inside this great style is continued as The Alma makes a use of its cavernous structure to create several distinct seating areas littered with sofa's and old wooden tables. A walled patio area outside offers even more seating as well as a bit of comfort for smokers. The Alma also fancies itself a bit 'gastro' and has a great food menu which changes regularly. Though I found it a bit expensive for breakfast, my Eggs Benedict were lovely. With food like this and such a buzzing atmosphere The Alma is a must try for everyone!

Although it was quiet (probably being a weekday lunchtime) my friend and I were greeted promptly and in a friendly manner and taken to a table meant for four, which actually made a nice change to being crammed onto a table for two as it meant we had some elbow room. She took our drink order and talked us through that days specials and the dishes which were unavailable. Our drinks arrived a couple of minutes later where she asked if we were ready to order, we asked for more time, which she did. When we were ready, she was engaging and upbeat and took our orders and highly recommend the sweet potato chips. When our food arrived, it was well presented and was surprisingly more chips than I was expecting (cannot complain about that) with my veggie burger. It wasn't a 'traditional' veggie burger (more layered ingredients in a bun) but it was probably the best burger I have had at any restaurant. My friend had the pork belly and she enjoyed it greatly. The waitress was prompt with any needs but did not hover over us which was good as we didn't feel rushed. Once we had finished, we declined a pudding as we were full from the main course, a good sign of good sized portions. I would highly recommend this restaurant for those having a day out at the museum. Going from previous reviews, they really have improved themselves and hope to have the opportunity to visit again soon.

I also find it to be overpriced for what it is. The bar area is really comfortable and nicely decorated. The drinks selection is good, and even though it is cheap compared to London it is pricey for the area. My main issue is that I find The Akeman to be quite stuffy and pretentious. They have quite a strict dress code policy at weekends, and we have been turned away a couple of times because someone in our group was wearing trainers or flip flops. On a Friday & Saturday night you would think you were in a bar in the middle of the City with the amount people dress up. I find it all a bit too much for little old Tring.
