Love this place! If I could buy stock in this place, I would. They have all of your camera needs. They are very knowledgeable and courteous. They have both a new camera section and a used camera section. You can trade in your old camera towards a new one! Their hours are a little wonky, in my opinion. Roberts kicks butt. There's no other way to say it. Being a photography enthusiast, I've been to several different types of camera stores in my day. Roberts wins best all-around shop in Indy for sure. While shopping last month for a new digital SLR camera, the folks at the downtown location were more than helpful--even steering me away from a camera that was more expensive than the Nikon D40 I ended up getting. Another great perk--aside from their honesty and knowledge about everything in the store: They offer free photography classes for anyone who purchased a camera at their store. I keep trying to like Roberts, but in the end I just can't. The store still smells weird and it's been open for a couple of years. The customer service is very hit and miss. I was in on Saturday trying to find a better zoom lens only to be shown lenses that were more than double what I was willing to pay. I'm an amateur photographer that shoots for fun. Are my pictures good enough for people to pay for them? Yes, I choose not to charge. After arriving home, I find that there were options in my price range and at Roberts, but they just didn't feel like showing them to me. The guy that helped us was very condescending. My daughter wanted to look at some lower end cameras. He acted like it was the worst thing he was going to have to do that day. So, we left without buying anything. After researching and finding a lens that would work and within my price range, I went back to Roberts to buy it. I want to support the local business. Same jerk was working at the Canon counter. I bought a Nikon digital camera from theses guy over EBay and I can not tell you the fast service they provided me. They guaranteed the camera fir 6 months and this is my third replacement camera. They don't fix it the replace it with a brand new camera. I sent them back my camera from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and with a week I had a new one in my hands. Kudos for a job well done. read more

I like this place! Went there earlier today, glad they have their own parking lot off to the side of the building, but anyways the people working here knows their stuff and are very helpful! I had a brief but excellent experience at Roberts. I bought a Holga over the summer (which I still haven't used) and came in to buy the appropriate film. I had no idea what I was doing, and couldn't make sense of most the questions the clerk asked me, but he was very patient and helpful. I bought some black and white film here, which I'm sure I'll put to use one day. Just being in the store was a fun experience, too--it's a lot bigger than it looks from the street, and full to the brim with photography paraphernalia. read more

Purchased a pre-owned camera in "very good" condition, paid a very fair competitive price (well over $1500) . I received the camera and checked the shutter count, it had a 719,000 count! I returned it (after they apologized profusely) and was offered a better camera in "excellent" condition for $150 more. I took the chance. Received the second camera and the hot shoe was completely crushed and inoperable, sent back for a full refund. Not sure who is rating their pre-owned products but I do not recommend purchasing ANYTHING from this company. How do they not see the obvious damage? It took me 30 seconds to notice. read more

Unless you're into digital, the employees at Roberts aren't interested in having you as a customer. I have (unfortunately) shopped with Roberts for the past 5 years, and each time that I have visited, I have sworn the place off forever...only to drag myself back because I need something right away, and cannot wait for a shipment from B&H, KEH, or literally any other place but Roberts. I've actually gone out of my way NOT to shop here. But it never fails that I find myself walking into their musty (seriously, this place smells awful), fake atmosphere. This journey through hell begins with the overly fake receptionist who may or may not greet you at the door, depending on if she's doing her nails that day. And if you make your way towards the photo lab area, you'll find the three half shelves that this places pathetically refers to as their technical film department. The film selection is minimal, with 3 of the 5 types of film out of stock at any one time. Additionally, this film is not priced, at all, in any way, shape or form, and the only way to figure it out is to flag down one of the lethargic, bored employees. Photo chemicals are hardly ever in stock, which is incredibly strange, because the Herron School of Art and Design is located fewer than 5 minutes from the store, and student's would LOVE to purchase chemicals from Roberts, if only they were ever in stock. It's impossible to ask an employee a question about film development outside of basic 35mm...doing so either causes the employee to grimace or simply walk away. On my most recent visit, a small boy was visiting the store with his father, and they were looking for a basic point and shoot 35mm camera. A salesman informed them that basic point and shoots aren't kept or sold because "there's really no money in them." How awful and sad for this child who wanted to learn about photography and film to be let down like this. This child was a potential life-long customer, and Roberts ended the relationship as soon as it started...pointing out that they are more concerned about profit than customer retention. On another visit, in search of slide film, a salesman told me that slide film development had been discontinued (at Roberts), so there was really no point in selling the film. Not only is this logic incredibly flawed and self-centered, but it completely disregards those of us who develop our own film. Roberts is (and has been) driving away traditional photographers, in favor of digital customers. It's a shame that, even at Roberts Camera, film is a dying art. There is an entire community of film photographers and photography students who would be overjoyed to utilize Roberts as their local go-to source for film and chemical supplies, but Roberts has made it evident that these customers should ditch their film canisters for SD cards. If you're interested in seeing if a product is in stock, you'd have better luck asking your magic 8 ball, because even a phone call to the store to check means nothing. At least three times, I have called to inquire about a product, and all three times these products have magically been sold or discontinued since I phoned. Finally, the check-out process is always awkward. Employees in the back pretend to be busy, and direct you to the designated checkout in the front of the store. Employees at the designated check out ask you if you need something, and when they finally realize that you're trying to give them money in exchange for a product, they sigh and remind you that you can always check out in the back of the store. No one in this store thinks that it's their job to take your money, and they'd rather pawn you off to someone else. Roberts has incredible opportunity to support the film community of Indianapolis, as well as the students at one of the only fine arts photography schools in Indiana...but they really don't seem to care. read more

As for the staff I have had mixed experiences, sometime very friendly and helpful at other times cold and indifferent. I really expected whoever answered the phone to be better versed in cameras, especially the currently "hot" items. I called asking if they had both the Sony A7R III and A7 III available to compare. Nope, only the r. Then the guy said the only difference was the resolution. To which I said no, the EVF and back display are much better on the R and the non-R has a better focusing system. I want to compare them to see which to buy. To which he replied, what's an EVF (electronic view finder if you don't know, but an integral part of all mirrorless cameras). After I explained he insisted that you couldn't see the difference, which is one of the reasons I wanted to physically see both cameras to judge for myself. Then he explained they only had 1 of the A7 III and they wouldn't take it out of the box, even for a potential buyer, until it was sold. So much for trying to get a customer into their store. Hope can find a buyer who will buy it then look at it. And hope they can figure out to get new customers into their store. It would be easier to just order it from 42nd St or B&H and then return it if you don't like it. read more

I have no business buying a camera and, yet, here I am trying to buy a (low end, used) camera to see if I can really pick this hobby up and play around with things I've only been reading about. I came to Roberts not knowing anything and with a lot of questions. Tim spent a fair amount of time answering my newbie questions, not rushing me, and seemed happy to show me things I wouldn't have even known to ask. I thought I knew what I wanted, but after getting my price point and goals, he made recommendations that I'm looking forward to getting & think I'll be much happier with. I cant say enough good things about my experience with Roberts! I ordered a lens on Black Friday from Roberts. The post office lost my package a few days later. I called their office and Nick went above and beyond to make sure that I was taken care of. He called the manager of the store closest to me so that I could come and pick one up and make sure a 2nd package wasn't lost. Their grading scale is very accurate and prices are generally lower than KEH. Can't comment on the physical store since i live in CA, but i'm happy to continue to purchase from them. read more

Tried to buy a Nikon Z50 online with my paypal prepaid card linked to my paypal acount, Ive had this card for almost 10 years and bought $thousands of dollars of equipment from B&H, Adorama, and countless other stores. Well this week those other big stores are closed for a jewish holiday and I came across Roberts Camera in a google search and also heard good things about them on Youtube, but better yet they were up and running and not on holiday. So I order the camera on Saturday through them, then a few hours later I get an email saying I was flagged and declined for fraud. But the temporary charge was still pending for a few days and Im not rich so I needed that money to clear before looking elsewhere. I called Roberts camera to try to find out why I was declined, and the lady on the phone said it was declined by the people that handle their finances and she didnt know why I was declined also. So to make a long story short, I have no reason why I was declined, I had to wait a couple days for the "pending" charge to fall off, and I eventually bought the camera at Best Buy with no hassles, even though I wanted to support a "camera store" and not the big stores. Im sure Roberts Camera is a great place but this was my first attempted purchase, and sadly my last. read more

I've shopped at Roberts many times in the past 3 years (the downtown store). I'm fairly knowledgeable, so I generally go in knowing about what I want. Like Nobuyuki S., I haven't had a "brand fanatic" problem either; when I have asked questions, their answers have been honest, and based on their experience. Where their experience doesn't agree with the reviews I've found, they say so, but they don't get cocky or try to upsell you or persuade you to a different brand. When you discover they were right (it's happened to me), they accept the returned lens graciously and will sell you their recommendation (a third party lens with which I have been very happy). They never rubbed my nose in it. I've gone in willing to spend hundreds on an expensive tripod, only to have them ask what I intended to use it for and suggest a less-expensive alternative. I've sold used equipment to them, and found them honest and willing to give reasonable value. They pay right away - I don't like to bundle up my equipment, send it off to some place, and hope they send a reasonable check in a reasonable time. Bricks and mortar are invaluable for that, and for hands-on testing & help in choosing new equipment. I've purchased point-and-shoot equipment from them. They've been friendly but often don't know much about it - they don't act like they think they're Alfred Stieglitz, just admit they don't use that equipment and move on. I've even purchased watches from them, at a reasonable price. I have never been dissatisfied by the service I've received. If they don't repair, it's generally because the manufacturer won't allow it under warranty or sell the necessary parts. To be fair to Matt F., though I'm not a professional, I've been shooting SLR/DSLR for more than a couple of decades and I'm kind of a techie person anyway, so I can't speak to the experience you'd have if you went in as an amateur. For a knowledgeable buyer looking for up-level equipment, though, it's great. If you want more space or better parking, try the Carmel store. Me, I'm happy there's a Roberts downtown, of any kind, and that it has any free parking available at all. read more

I was photographing a national championship in Indy when my camera had a major issue. A Roberts employee WALKED camera over to a professional repair place within minutes. The pro wasn't able to determine the problem. After a call to camera manufacturer, who also couldn't determine the problem, I resigned myself to purchase of new camera body. I called Roberts who agreed to split up a camera kit and sell me the camera body for $800. When I arrived at Roberts, an employee JJ, told me he owned the same camera. He asked if he could take a look at it. After considerable time and a lot of patience, he FIXED my camera, even though he could have sold me a new $800 camera body and I'd have been out of the store in 10 min, missing only my $800. I placed an order on the Roberts web site a week ago for a $780 Pentax lens, and have not heard a thing back from Roberts, even after I have emailed them about the status of my order. I see now the lens is out of stock and I doubt Roberts will restock the lens, because they do not show on their web site that they carry Pentax cameras. It would have been good business for Roberts to have emailed saying they had received my order, even if they could not fill it because they sold the lens before I ordered. Needless to say because of lack of contact from Roberts I will not be ordering from them again, and would still like to know if I am getting the lens or not, so I could order from someone else if Roberts cannot fill my order. read more

Roberts is THE camera store in town if you want to get camera equipment at the best prices. I get all of my camera gear there because first, their prices almost always match or beat online prices, second, I can try it out in the store before purchasing it, third, their staff is very knowledgeable (I'm a professional photographer and rely on their knowledge), and fourth, if there is a problem, Roberts is local and I can come back to return the item or exchange it. They are very accommodating. Being able to try it out and return it is a big deal as far as I'm concerned. I learned this lesson the hard way when I purchased a $2700 camera from a big camera store out east (starting with the letter A) and had a problem. It took me three weddings with the new camera to uncover the issue because it was intermittent. At that point, it was out of the 2 week return period (by three days) and the store out east wouldn't take it back. I ended up having to send it to Canon twice to get the issue fixed. I also noticed when I received the camera and unboxed it, that it looked like it had been opened before and the file number on the first image I took was over 9,000, meaning someone had likely taken that many images with the camera. When I called the camera store, they said that number started out randomly. I wanted to believe them and let it go until I spoke to Canon tech support when they were fixing the intermittent issue. They said image count did not start at a random number and it was an actual count of shutter actuations. It should have started at 0. So, basically the store out east sold me a returned item (it was a new camera model, just released, so could not have been a floor model). I've since purchased cameras from Roberts and they start out at 0 or very close to it. I followed that mistake by another when I purchased a $425 flash from a different store out east (starts with the letter B) and had to send it to Canon three times, also for an intermittent problem. Lesson learned after two mistakes. I also like the fact that Roberts has its own parking lot right next to the store. It's in an alley, so it's tight, but I have to walk no more than 100 feet. In the 5 years I've been going there (many times), I've only had to find parking elsewhere once. To put it in perspective, most businesses downtown do not have parking and it's either a meter or the mall garage. read more

I bought a Canon SD780 for a very good price on the spot. The sales help was very nice and knowledgeable. They gave me a good recommendation on a memory card and I was on my way. Went in to Roberts Meridian to purchase a new prosumer HD camcorder. I'm a recent graduate from Ball State, beginning to freelance, and had around $8,000 to spend. I wanted to buy locally, as I like supporting small camera shops (like Jack's in Muncie, AWESOME place). However, after standing at the pro video counter for around 10 minutes, I still couldn't coerce a salesman to come speak with me. I finally stopped a woman running past, asked her to find me some help, and after another five minutes, was greeted by a very passive salesman. Long story short, the camera that I was looking to purchase (Panasonic AG-HMC150) wasn't in stock, but the salesman said he could check on price for me. Never received a call back, and calls to the store left me on hold long enough to hang up and forget about it. Bought all my gear from B&H, and couldn't be happier. Awesome people, my salesman even emailed me a few weeks after shipment to check up. Roberts could learn a thing or two from other retailers. Awful service, unfriendly, downright rude staff....never again will this store see a dime of my money, even if it means driving 45 minutes to Muncie to visit Jack's. read more

I have shopped here a couple of times with questions and let me say....asking these people questions was like asking why wont there mother get a sex change or something on that point. they get bent out of shape for my questions. one time I brought in a Sony Alfa serious with 3 different lenses and said I was interested in a trade in upgrade understanding I may have to pay more. Salesman rolled his eyes blindly reached in the case grabbed the first camera his hand touched without looking and said "here" I asked about a lens he said its extra. I replied "im really sorry that I bothered you with my questions and willing to buy, have a nice day" his response was "whatever" and rolled his eyes. I returned a couple months later and asked about lenses and said 500 was my budget what does he do......shows me a 2500 dollar lens, I asked about used and he pointed to the used section and didnt say a word.....how rude I decided to buy a part from him besides to buy online yesterday, when I said I wanted to look around he refused to give me the part thinking I was going to steal it! I cannot remember when I first became a customer of Robert's - it has been over 20 years. Since then, I have purchased one film camera, 6 digital cameras, 11 lenses, 2 flash units, and several filters and other accessories there. Pricing available from Robert's equals that available from any internet supplier I have seen. When I add to that the advice I have received from the very knowledgeable staff, I have become a "smart" shopper. Their photo lab does a great job on regular-sized prints and enlargements. Since they have added Used Photo Pro (a physical store with a solid internet presence), Robert's can fulfill the needs of a wide range of photographers. I still research equipment on the internet, but I only purchase at Robert's. I am also actively involved in the classes and semonars they offer. read more
