I grew up in Charleston SC, lived almost 20 yrs in Kansas City and recently moved from Austin TX, which means my BBQ knowledge is fairly extensive. I inevitably get the question "who has the best BBQ?" to which my response is always any state can have great or poor BBQ these days. That leads me to writing a review of Robert's. Located in a fairly easy location to access in North Charleston, with plenty of parking Robert's has an extremely modest exterior a little listless but I'm not judging paint schemes! As for the drive through, I found the ladies were extremely friendly and quick to fulfill the order. I'd say my wait time was roughly 5 minutes or so which isn't bad. Let's mosey onto the food, the real star shall we? I'll start off with the onion rings. I've been craving REAL onion rings for some time. I've had it with the prefrozen, fast food garbage and wanted the real deal. Robert's rings are a step above but I admit, they had way too much breading to onion ratio. A lot of mustard Q sauce made me forget that indiscretion. Still this scratched my itch and I was happy. Another item I've been craving for years is hash. My experience was an above average effort with a decent amount of meat in it and a nice zing of mustard as a background flavor. What I thought brought the experience down was the rice. It was so bland and overcooked; bordering on mush. That said the flavor and texture almost made up for it; almost. As for the pulled pork sandwich - pure bliss. The pork was moist and flavorful while having the perfect amount of meat piled high on a soft bun. That and I love the BBQ sauce. This sandwich is worth its weight in gold! In summary, I went to another Roberts growing up. Once a month my dad and I would stop in and get a BBQ sandwich and onion rings on the way to the lake. These memories have stuck with me and while the onion rings and rice were a tad off, the sandwich is exactly what I remember which brought a smile to my face. I have a feeling my nitpicking might have caught them on an off day so I'll be hitting the restaurant again. The sandwich is good enough for the sins of the masses. read more

The "pulled pork" is not an appropriate name for the meat they serve, it looks and tastes like it was processed in a blender with mainly the "mustard called" sauce drowning it. You should just drink it with a straw, because it falls through a fork!! The coleslaw is also drinkable because it contains ALOT of liquid (not sure, maybe watered down mayo??) The instant rice with a "touch" of hash was barely edible. Oh, and the grocery store rolls that were to come with butter, were cold and missing any "butter". After hearing about this place from my son in law, I had to try it, but I deeply regret it and do not recommend anyone looking for Southern BBQ to be mistaken with this stuff. I gotta say their salads to-go are incredibly tasty! I'm impressed by the cleanliness of their lettuce..y'know how some salads have that stained, wilted, spotty kind of greens? Not Robert's! I get the salad where it includes ham, onions, tomatoes, some red cabbage, egg, tomatoes, and iceberg lettuce with a generous side cup of ranch. This place has a great Carolina sauce. A hash and rice came with my plate and I had no idea what that was. Still not completely sure but it's a pork or beef sweet sauce served over rice. Very delicious! Coleslaw was also very tasty. The Carolina sauce comes on the food already so if you do not want it let them know when you order. The seasonal dessert was banana pudding and it had coconut flakes in it. I did not care for it but several others in my party loved it. Very friendly staff and the restaurant tables were clean. This is absolutely the best barbecue place there is on earth the only fault they have is updating their yelp information they close early during the week and Friday is the only day we can get anything I just spent an hour going there and back because they decided to close at 5 o'clock oh excuse me 4 o'clock I'm disgusted with the whole program they have going on over there. Robert's has been a staple for my family for years. We frequently visited the location on River's Ave back in the day. Every time my family comes into town, they want Robert's. They have good burgers & their onion rings are delicious. Their menu is on the smaller size, but they have a decent assortment of options. The biggest issue for this place is that is severely needs a makeover! It's doesn't look the cleanest & the decor is straight out of the 1980s. I know they probably cannot afford a renovation, but I guarantee that it would improve business. Overall, it isn't bad. I will continue to eat here on occasion. read more

Basic. Nothing special or over the top about it, just basic BBQ. That gets Roberts 2 stars. That and very nice Christmas decorations. However, the younger girls working the front Monday lunch were just short of me calling them rude. Not welcoming like you'd expect from a family restaurant. More the 'What do you want?' attitude. Perhaps Robert's should change their name and drop the BBQ. I actually enjoy their burgers and milkshakes, but if you are going to claim to be a BBQ restaurant, you best have darn good pork. I've tried the pulled pork a few times and it's just not up to SC BBQ standards. I am not a huge fan of mustard based sauce, which is one of the reason I'm not a fan of their pork, but their are many others. I know pulled pork is suppose to be a tad fatty but Roberts takes it to an extreme with the amount of fat in their pork. I've also had a few chunks of something inedible (whether it was bone or gristle). Again, if their claim to fame was being a burger joint that happened to have BBQ, my opinion would be higher of Roberts. But if you are looking for good, SC pork, it's probably not the best place to stop. read more

I have been a fan of Roberts since I was a high schooler cruisin' Rivers Ave and hitting their drive in down at Remount. Oh the memories. For those they'll always be a 5 star. As for food, I love, love, love, addicted to (did I mention love?) their onion rings. I never have anything but their club (which is HUMONGOUS) with fries and always a double ring. I'm not entirely sure why I order that much food because it usually takes me 3 meals to finish it off but hey, it's Roberts. It's getting eaten! My family however all love the BBQ and hash/rice. They swear by it. Yes, the restaurant is sometimes hot, sometimes the crew isn't the friendliest ever but who cares. They have THE best onion rings ever. I did mention that, didn't I? I too have been eating Robert's barbecue food since back in the day when it was a drive in off Rivers Avenue, but what I received today is just... sad, for lack of a better descriptive word. We no longer eat pork but I LOVE barbecue so I ordered a barbecue chicken basket. I received a small sad grilled chicken filet with mayo lettuce and tomato that in no way resembled a barbecue chicken sandwich. They no longer offer beef barbecue either. The order taker either wasn't listening to my order or thought that any old chicken sandwich would do. The bread was smushed and soggy as well - I didn't eat it. Roberts BBQ recon report. Food: Double Chili Cheese Burger, Fries. The Burger is good, the chili has a nice flavor. The fries were over done and hard. Most times they are cooked properly. I was never impressed with the BBQ at this BBQ place but enjoy the burgers and dogs. Service: I eat here often and always hear people in the back yelling at each other about what is not done and why nobody is watching the front. They are always hiring and the people seem to come and go frequently. Just my observation. Food comes fast consistently. Location and decor: Old and worn. Place needs some TLC and a makeover to appeal to most. Cost: Reasonable and about what I pay at most burger joints. Just don't bother. The food isn't great, almost *resembles* Bessenger's BBQ in west ashley, but it's not fresh, and nowhere near as good. Obviously the owners and employees really don't care about this place. The food is overpriced and the inside is just like the other customer posted- it's a dump. The employees have never been friendly to me either. I've been there 4 times in the past 10 years, because I live nearby. I guess I kept hoping it would get better, but that hasn't been the case. Me and Husband come here all the time at least 2-4 times a month. Well today we ordered our food. My Husband wanted the Chicken Salad sandwich with Lettuce. The waitress came up to me and said that if he really wants lettuce on his sandwich she has to charge me .55 cents. I said to her that my son's burger comes with Lettuce and he didn't want lettuce tomato or mayo. She said do you want me to argue the point with her. I said no and just paid the .55 cents. But thinking maybe if they want to do that we should ask for a refund on the items we have them remove from our order or tell them to put those items on the side to either use or throw out.I don't care about the extra charge but next time I will ask for the items on the side and do with them what I want since I am paying for them. Lived in Charleston for 27 years and never been to this place until today ...and I'm kicking myself for it! Had a great first experience - got the food fast, hot and delicious! Don't understand the lack of love of the other reviewers. I've been eating Roberts since the 70's when it was a drive-in at Rivers and Remount. It moved to Rivers and Otranto area in the 80's, expanding to to Dorchester Road current location but closing Otranto store when DOT cut off their main ingress and egress 10+ years ago. Food is exactly the same it has always been from the mustard based sauce to the house made onion rings. If you want a mustard sauce bbq sandwich then you can't get much better IMHO. Lots more competition in the bbq market these days, and if you want to compare Roberts to Hometeam or Rodney Scott or Lewis, well, they just ain't doing the same thing. They do what they do extremely well but this is more like fast food that serves a decent burger but mainly a really fine bbq sandwich with no frills. My basket sandwich with soda was $11 and change. Ok....trying to do the low carb thing and my bud wanted a burger, so here we go....when I entered, I was greeted accordingly with a smug look. Now I won't explain why because it will be understood by some unsavory types but never the less, I was greeted. I walked up to the counter with my compadres and proceeded to attempt to make the counter lady laugh to no avail...she wasn't having it! I ordered a confusing lot of pulled pork with no bun and hash with no rice...and 1 bad for my new endeavor onion ring! I prayed and then dug in...after taking a couple bites, I figured that I would mix some meat into my hash...bad idea....doing so unearthed a long black hair with chunks of meat stuck to it! I was supposed to meet my boyfriend here for lunch but he got stuck at work so I ended up going by myself. I didn't notice they have a drive thru until after I parked the truck or else I may have just gotten my meal to go. I ordered the chopped bbq sandwich with fries and a drink. I love to support local businesses but unfortunately their mustard based sauce didn't appeal to me (very few mustard sauces do). However, the meat was nice and moist and since my boyfriend and everyone else he knows loves this place so I'm sure I'll be back. Yessss!! Whenever I'm in charleston, I become a Roberts regular!! I absolutely love their bbq. They def have someone's grandmother in that kitchen putting her foot in the sauce. When i entered the establishment I was immediately placed into the 90s, the decor is a bit dated ,but that's part of Roberts charm ! I tasted about everything on the menu. But what stands out most is the bbq sauce it's amazing it's tangy sweet perfection !!! The presentation of the chopped bbq is a little messy but the taste makes up for everything ! I wish this restaurant nothing but success! May Roberts remain opened forever. Can't wait to go back !! read more
