One shop seems to concentrate more on 'classic' hardware items - paints, nails, sandpaper and the like. The next door shop is more oriented towards general homewares - pet foods, haberdashery, toasters.....it is difficult to see how such a wide range of goods is available in two very small shops, but they manage it. The friendly staff will help advise you with anything you need, and although I'm not sure how long it has been there, I get the impression this has been a local institution for some time.

Ok, I couldn't decide on what to buy (luggage restrictions - but good for my wallet, otherwise I would just bought everything!!) so I had to go one second time to check again and buy as much as I could! Thus, two times on the same day and they already knew me! Oh well, is just the way it is, but they were friendly, chatty and their product knowledge is amazing. I came away with a couple of old fashioned preservation bottles and a nifty little device to stop teapots dripping - a highly original Christmas present and lots of fun while the recipient tries to guess the function of said gift! They stock a high quality range of paint which is cheaper than what you get at most decorating or DIY stores and they have great discounts too. Due to space restrictions they may not stock highly specialized items or tools (I personally would like to be able to get power tools from a friendly local shop but can understand the difficulties in stocking them) but they do have nearly all items which the average DIY enthusiast might need and they have a good selections of household electrics too. Also, the staff will always be happy to advise you on where to get what you are looking for if they don't stock the item. I definitely prefer shopping there rather than in a large anonymous DIY chain and would advise anyone to give them a try.

Another bonus is that this store is open seven days a week (things always tend to go wrong when you least expect!). They'd get another star from me if their service was better: the staff are generally friendly and try to be helpful, but it always seems a bit chaotic, especially at the till. You walk past loads of cake making gadgets, knives and cutlery and then all of a sudden you're surrounded by cleaning products and reduced items. The staff never seem to know where anything is either, although they are friendly enough. If there was a Wilkinsons in Brighton, I think most people would go there instead. It's pretty pricey here!
