It has everything that I could possibly want for my house. For real! I love everything in there…read more They have amazing stuff from tableware to woodenware, textiles and enamelware, from glassware to tea pots, jugs and mugs on a shop with such a nice decoration and pleasant staff that makes a shopping experience being so good. The shop is really cool, on a building with a lovely colour and all the wonderful things are organized in a neatly and tidy way that makes it even harder to resist. Ok, I couldn't decide on what to buy (luggage restrictions - but good for my wallet, otherwise I would just bought everything!!) so I had to go one second time to check again and buy as much as I could! Thus, two times on the same day and they already knew me! Oh well, is just the way it is, but they were friendly, chatty and their product knowledge is amazing. So, feel free to go around, buy all you need (and what you don't need but there are so many awesome things that is just impossible not to) and try not spending all your money! Totally worth it.

Utility is a fun little shop selling all those household items you didn't realise you needed until…read moreyou walked through the doors. Their philosophy is supplying goods that are both attractive and hard waring, the name of the shop and the idea being drawn from WWII rationing. They have a large range of bakeware, storage pots, utensils, dining ware, aprons and tea towels. Some items even come with explanations in case their use isn't obvious. I came away with a couple of old fashioned preservation bottles and a nifty little device to stop teapots dripping - a highly original Christmas present and lots of fun while the recipient tries to guess the function of said gift! The shop owner is really friendly and loves a chat as you browse. They also have an on-line shop if you're not local but still want to check out what they have to offer.

They stock a high quality range of paint which is cheaper than what you get at most decorating or DIY stores and they have great discounts too. Due to space restrictions they may not stock highly specialized items or tools (I personally would like to be able to get power tools from a friendly local shop but can understand the difficulties in stocking them) but they do have nearly all items which the average DIY enthusiast might need and they have a good selections of household electrics too. Also, the staff will always be happy to advise you on where to get what you are looking for if they don't stock the item. I definitely prefer shopping there rather than in a large anonymous DIY chain and would advise anyone to give them a try.

I'd give them 4 stars, but there's one gripe: It's the middle-aged guy who I assume is the owner. He always seems a bit irritated to answer any questions and is completely cold towards customers. If you're lucky, you'll get one of the other staff who are much nicer and able to interact with humans. It was unfortunate to see them downsize to smaller premises, but I wonder had the owner not treated customers like they were bothering him, then maybe they would've done better. In contrast, Dockrills in the center of Brighton has really friendly, helpful staff and I'd recommend them over Bedford.

I found it much easier to wander through the aisles here and appreciate the variety of home and garden items available. There's pretty much every kitchen appliance you could imagine: sandwich makers, mini hotdog grillers, cappacino machines and even the allusive filter coffee maker, crock pots, kettles, toasters and a cotton candy machine! Wowy. That one's even on offer. Kitchen stuff also includes dishware, utensils, and a few kitschy items like Sergeant Pepper and Corporal Salt. Homewear then moves into tools, paint and hardware as well as an aisle of household cleaners and a few electronics: telephones, keyboards, USB drives and a small selection of printers (like, two.) For gardeners, Robert Dyas has tools in a variety of styles, plus a huge display of seeds. The prices of everything are really reasonable, and I'll definitely be back to pick things up when I move off-campus.
