The view from the third floor window is amazing and the neighborhood is pretty safe too. There's a lot of local businesses where we can buy food and interact with each other such as the corner store and the library or the park that's right behind the school. However, even though most of the teachers are relatively nice, like everything in this world, it's not perfect. There was one teacher who insulted a kid to another degree and sometimes the food can be slightly inedible. There's also a lot of violence, but that's really the students fault. Many kids are also constantly breaking the rules and always getting into fights. That's an honest review from a student that attends this school.

I…read morecame here for work and wanted to give my observations on the campus layout and the area in regards to safety. First off, Roanoke Virginia is a very historic town and the people here are super friendly very inviting and quick to lend a hand when it's needed! The campus is spread out but the buildings are easy to find and labeled well. There are campus maps periodically spread out through the walking paths at the campus itself. There's lots of student interaction on campus I myself got lost looking for the building I was heading to for a conference and stopped someone who quickly pointed me in the right direction. The buildings are clean and updated when it comes to the historic buildings, and lots of new construction buildings on campus as well! As a town, Roanoke is easy to navigate the streets are well maintained and the area is well lit at night. I had zero concern for walking downtown out of my hotel and the quaintness of the entire city is extraordinary.

I'm amazed sometimes by the amount of knowledge one person can accumulate in a lifetime about one…read moreparticular subject. That's what I was thinking during my guided tour of Historic Smithfield, a plantation house turned museum and farm. Our tour guide knew so much about the American Revolution, George Washington, the Civil War and Virginia in general. Plus so much more! He knew everything about the families and enslaved individuals who lived in that house. It was a very informative visit. I'm not even sure you can visit the inside of Smithfield without a guided tour. I should say, though, that although the guided tour was informative, I would suggest it only for adults who might have an interest in history, or people who don't have a short attention span. They cover a lot of information here, and even I was feeling like I was melting down at the end of the tour, because it was just so many facts and we went at a slow pace. So, would I recommend a guided tour for kids? Absolutely not. At least, not my kids or any kids I know. But I would suggest you let kids explore the grounds outside, and say hello to the livestock roaming the fields, and run around the garden. There's a small gift shop with a few snacks and water. The gift shop is also where you purchase admission. There's lots of parking in the gravel parking lot.

No longer owned by the APVA, it's a private foundation now I believe, the house has been painstakingly restored and features many pieces owned by the original family. Take the tour! The on-site historian who gives them is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the history of not only the plantation and Home, but the area as well. I could have listened to her for hours! This is reasonably priced ($8 for adults, but we found a groupon!) and the gift shop has some nice and locally made choices.

A lovely, renovated railroad depot (end of a line), with a variety of rooms, including a caboose…read moreyou can stay in. It is tastefully furnished, with comfortable beds and a great common room. It's garden is beautiful, and well worth a wander around (and along Potts Creek). The general store opposite has a great restaurant (the ribs were excellent) and we caught a live band the night we were there which was great fun. The roads around are a blast to drive too. What more could you want from a road trip stop!

The common room in the main building was full of area lore and photographs. There is a comfortable sitting area, and well stocked snack area with fresh fruits, muffins, cold cereals, cookies, and various drinks including sodas, juices, milk and coffee. The only thing I would recommend is taking a cooler with ice if you like to have cold drinks and the like in your room. There wasn't a small dorm fridge in the caboose when we stayed. For what the stay costs, I would expect one, rooms that cost a third as much almost always have one, and a microwave. The staff were very pleasant, and very easy to get ahold of when needed. The main building and caboose are within walking distance of the Paint Bank General Store, Swinging Bridge Restaurant and Tingler's Mill. Just a little note for those not familiar with a caboose, they are small. Room is limited and quarters are tight. I expected this and planned for it, so it wasn't an unexpected issue for me.

It would have been helpful if they told us to go downstairs. All I saw was a staircase so that wasn't ideal. The staff in the donation site was helpful and super quick. It's ab open bay setting and no televisions or entertainment. I would come back. I just wish they had an easier way to answer questions. The tablet is tiny and seeing it is tough. Also if there was a sign ro tell you where to go when you come in would be helpful as would an elevator sign upstairs.
