Maridor - The Bar of the Restaurant, painted a beautiful blue color.

And The Maridor is the perfect example. This historic mansion, built in 1916 and restored many years later, received its name from its its third owner, Marion Augustus Smyth, President of National Business College who re-named the home "Maridor" after his two children, Marion and Dorothy. Maridor. It is located in the highly regarded area of the historic Grandin Village, in Roanoke, Virginia. Established in 1993, The Maridor offers a versatile event space for weddings, corporate functions, and social gatherings. And also has a very unique restaurant that currently is open Wednesdays through Fridays from 4:00 to 9pm. One can book a reservation through their website to dine in either the Restaurant, the Bar, the Dining Room, or the Patio, and enjoy some excellent cuisine from Director and Executive Chef Seth who offers southern-style cooking with International comfort food flavors. What he has created is a place with a diverse menu, where one can go and dine in, enjoying the history of the house with some nice food and drinks at a reasonable price. With Seth's background in Asian cuisine from his Food Truck days, he created a menu with two sides: A West Side and an East Side, providing in it something for everyone's tastes. But his ultimate vision is to create unforgettable dining experiences that inspire and delight his guests. With this amazing background information, I was tempted to go try it out, and thought of all the other restaurants I had discovered in this same way. By driving by them several times until I decided it was time to go experience what's inside. I made a reservation for a Friday at 6:30 pm. When I arrived the house was so big I couldn't find thr entrance at first, but I phoned them and they told me I was at the right place and how to reach the front door. I was warmly greeted by a charming lady with a great personality and taking to the dining room of the house. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review for a better sense of the feel of this restaurant. I was seated at the table of my choice. My server Sharon had the bartender make me a Mocktail to start off with and I had a treat ordering from the menu. For appetizer some Crab Rangoons, followed by a Classic Shrimp Cocktail, and Rockefeller Oysters. As the main course, the Beef Brisket Bao Buns, and for dessert, I later order their Maple Pecan Bourbon Bread Pudding. My server came to check on my at the right times and to fill me in with the History of this house and restaurant and I had a one of a kind dining experience. I highly recommend this place for a couple's night out, or to dine with family and friends. The place provides a comfortable yet distinguish environment in which to enjoy quality time with your loved ones.

Also yes. Do I meet some really interesting people in line and appreciate that as well as the cleanliness of the bathrooms once I finally get to use one? Absolutely yes.

That part was annoying. Also plan to be squished like sardines when watching a show if you haven't paid for seating. Of course some clutz/drunk guy spilled his drink on my shoes while standing towards the back watching the show. Definitely buy a seat upstairs if you want your personal space and don't want to constantly be in other people's way. General admission style on the ground floor. It also got super hot with crowded capacity of people they allow in. Downstairs bathroom and basement area was nice and cool. Outside the front area for smokers and fresh air. There was also a food truck parked outside the front of you get hungry. The building itself was really cool, old but maintained and remodeled to keep the antique architecture preserved.

Cocktail sauce was particularly tasty. We also had Devils on Horseback and they were soooo good. I love dates any way but wrap them in bacon and stuff with goat cheese???? Yes, please. We finished up with crab dipped stuffed mushrooms. Again, just outstanding. Oh...and my Smore's Old Fashioned was really good too. The toasted marshmallow and the caramel coconut rim were perfect. Service was top notch from start to finish. We are fans.

There are a handful of two top tables, a couple lounging areas, and then there are some high tops but not too much seating. They adieu have the bar seats as well. We had a server in training and both our servers were very attentive and friendly. I can't recall what cocktail we ordered but it was delicious. For dinner, we ordered the Khachapuri and the Japanese Tsukene Meatballs. They only had 2 main entrees but everything else was more small plates. The Meatballs were delicious. They were full of flavor and moist. The Khachapuri was also good but the bread was stuck to the parchment paper it was baked on pretty hard. In my opinion, it needed a touch of garlic but still good. It was nice to drop by for a little to have some cocktails but wish there was more on the menu.

I have stayed at lots of all inclusive resorts and this room was by far the prettiest and most comfortable. The attention to detail starting from the restaurant to the furniture boutique and upstairs to the hotel is amazing! We dined in the restaurant and had outstanding service from Caroline and the food was equally as outstanding. The menu is chock full of creative and interesting flavors and food combinations. We ordered 5 appetizers to share and loved every single one of them. Again, be open minded because this menu truly is creative. The furniture boutique has stunning pieces of Scandinavian/MCM style furniture all locally made in Roanoke with some serious attention to craftsmanship. These same items can be found upstairs in the boutique hotel. It was fun that you are allowed to have a glass of wine and chill in the lobby area next to the restaurant which is oh-so-comfortably decorated in their gorgeous furniture. I cannot begin to tell you how beautiful my room was. It was decorated so stylishly with absolutely not a touch of elegance overlooked. Stunning lighting fixtures, gorgeous textures, a comfortable sitting area, and lovely pieces of wooden furniture. The hardwood floors are simply to die for. They were my favorite part of the room. The bed was the single most comfortable bed I have ever stayed on in a hotel setting. It was like sleeping on a cloud surrounded in a hug from fairy wings. There is a communal area with snacks, couches and other places to gather or entertain a group. I really really really hope all future guests do their part to keep this place beautiful so that it remains a luxurious place to stay in the heart of downtown Roanoke. What an absolute gem. It feels like a betrayal to the amazing people who put their heart and soul into this hotel and restaurant to have a complaint. However, if I had one tiny suggestion to make, please put a table or a shelf or something in the bathroom. There is literally zero place to spread out toiletries and makeup. I used a towel on the floor to spread out my makeup in the morning. Not really a deal-breaker, but it's just a suggestion. And also to patrons, bring a hair dryer if you are going to use one. I did not find one in the room, but perhaps it was in a drawer or tucked away someplace I did not happen to see. Also, bring a sleep mask. This was definitely more on the light and bright side of hotel rooms, so morning came a bit earlier than I was expecting.

All the history and nostalgia in the building is palpable as soon as you walk in and take the beautiful wood spiral staircase to the second floor. There is an elevator also. The historic brass fire poles are still in existence, along with the creaky hardwood floors and georgous exposed brick. We stayed in room 6. Beautiful room with all the furniture from the Nordic furniture shop downstairs. Very tempting to buy a couch from the showroom downstairs! We ate at the restaurant, Stock downstairs. It was amazing, but keep in mind it is directly below room 6 and they don't close until around 11pm on the weekends and they stay about an hour after that to clean up. So you still may hear music and them moving chairs around while they clean up. We also stayed on a Friday night and some skateboarders decided to practice in the parking garage next door around 11:30 at night, but you are staying in the city so you have to expect things like that. Bathroom is beautiful with great water pressure in the shower. There is also a huge area to hang out in on the second floor if you need more space. If you like non-traditional hotel experiences, then add this one to your bucket list. 10-4!

I expect that the conference rooms would be solid options to host meetings, if you work remotely or simply want a change in venue from your office, but the main atrium/front room provides a welcoming environment for a mix-and-mingle cocktail reception. We were able to arrange some tables for food, a self-serve bar, photo "booth" area, and both low chairs and high top tables for a variety of ways to connect. The double front doors provided an easy entry, with plenty of natural light, and we appreciated the private kitchenette area and separate individual bathrooms. Plenty of working spaces in the back of the building and convenient to post-party drinks and dining options. It was nice having a gas station around the corner for extra ice and the co-op next door to get extra drinks. Brad was great with getting us set on our own with the space. I highly recommend considering the Roanoke CoLab for your next small event or also to use during the working hours.
