We finally got formal bids from three contractors and in our first visit with John, I knew he was a perfectionist and just as picky about details as I am. The level and quality of attention they gave us was downright impressive. We felt important from day one until completion. They maintained a stellar level of professionalism and accountability not only on behalf of Greg Katz Built but for their construction trades too. Ours was a 1,000 square foot, two bedroom one bath, 1940s bungalow, with four giant Heritage Live Oak trees on the small lot. Fast forward 8-ish months from breaking ground, we have a happy 3,000+ square foot split 2story home. We preserved the treasured bungalow look-and-feel from the curb, but walking in the front door reveals a crisp bright and open modern/contemporary/uniquely old Austin vibe home. And Greg saved the trees. Our project went smoothly because Greg Katz Built is very organized and we worked within a well planned timeline, budget, and project plan. Any unanticipated (by us) kinks that came up (tree root radius and foundation piers, extensive pre-existing framing wood rot, etc) were no surprise to them and they knew exactly how to handle them. Sticking to the timeline and the budget was always of importance and they followed through at every project milestone. And most importantly to us, we always felt they were on our side. We had a budget, and sometimes our eyes were bigger than what the budget could accommodate. Greg Katz was always there to help guide us and keep us within budget. Their reputation within the trades industries (tile and flooring, interior finishings, plumbing, etc) was impressive and advantageous. Their knowledge within those markets was a major perk for us. We consider ourselves very lucky to have worked with Greg Katz Built. It could have gone so wrong so many times had we not partnered with a competent team like them. We absolutely love them and we love our home. It's everything we wanted.

We've worked with Erick and the EJL team to renovate both bathrooms and the kitchen- the before and…read moreafter is pretty astonishing! I feel like I've moved into a brand new house- I'm absolutely thrilled with how the renovations turned out. The first renovation we completed was the guest bathroom, we retiled all wall surfaces, replaced the vanity and added penny tile flooring. I showed Erick several ideas that I'd found online and the final result is a million times better than what I had in mind. Erick walked me through what was feasible, what he's seen in his experience that works well, and also helped me price out all additional design pieces to help determine what upgrades were worth the extra cost. For the kitchen, we opened up a wall into the living room, created a large prep/counter space with barstools, and moved the refrigerator over to where the pantry cabinet was. These changes really transformed the entire layout of the main shared areas within the house. Once everyone agreed on the design, the EJL team went to work knocking out the kitchen in record time. We replaced all flooring, counters, cabinetry, tilework, appliances, and added new lighting. We also added electricity to the new pantry/appliance cabinet and installed kidney bean shelves in the lower corner cabinets to maximize the tight space. Because we knocked out a wall, Erick ensured that the ceiling in both the kitchen and adjoining dining room was taped and floated so that the two flowed cohesively. The result of the renovation is a significantly brighter and more functional space to cook in that allows for a semi-open layout that feels as if we've  added several hundred extra square feet to the house! The master bath was a fairly extensive remodel as well- the garden tub was converted into a standing shower and everything else was pretty much gutted from top to bottom. EJL has crews that can complete a wide array of renovation work from the simple to complex. We now have a huge walk in glass shower with beautiful tilework and two hidden nooks as well as a lower ledge for shaving. We went from 1980's seashell sinks to taller shaker style cabinets with more functional (and easier to clean!) drop in sinks. We also added more mirror space, lighting, and tripled the cabinet storage. It's refreshing in today's environment to see a contractor that will follow up and be committed to his client until the job is complete. Erick was meticulous in checking all the small details- we plan on using EJL in the near future to replace our floors/trim/doors and would recommend them without hesitation.

Melde Construction company's motto "Love your home. Enjoy the journey" is nothing but a facade…read moreafter the experience our family endured from May 2022 to December 2025. The quaint white building on 6th street, showcasing yearly "Austin Best Builder" signs with owner and employees who wear black tee shirts that say "Humility & Curiosity & Diligence & Confidence" is simply not at all what we experienced. We recently settled a six-figure lawsuit against Melde Construction, (new owner) Bernie Calcote, its former COO Nic Bell, its former Project Manager Jesse Marsh and several subcontractors. Mr. Calcote and Mr. Bell were never deposed under oath after much legal maneuvering and boxes of evidence and hours of witness testimony are not easily accessed publicly. Therefore, we feel an obligation to warn other potential clients about key facts before possibly hiring Melde construction or any of the people involved. Melde: 1) did not keep the project notebook required by the contract that would facilitate us to see invoices for labor & materials 2) used incorrect building materials 3) did not follow architectural plans 4) charged us for work they never ultimately performed 5) made errors that could have caused catastrophic fire and/or carbon monoxide poisoning 6) repeatedly lied by omission about water intrusions in the house while family lived elsewhere If this was simply a situation of a construction project that took too long and went over budget, or if Melde had taken responsibility, we would not be voicing our concerns publicly. Melde blamed the homeowners and refused to be accountable for its actions. Homeowners are still trying to solve Melde's errors, among the most egregious issues: -concealed water damage to original hardwood floors after failing to protect home during at least two storms (fall 2022) -installed incorrect furnace in attic that would have caused fire if activated -charged for an electrical service upgrade that did not occur -installed brick type we did not order, had workman chisel to look weathered instead of ordering weathered brick -placed new HVAC condensers without discussing placement -painted over damage to the ceiling in the garage (garage was not within project scope) -installed doors & handles on the addition that don't match existing doors & handles which are directly adjacent to addition -charged DOUBLE original quote for metal handrails then did not paint with direct to metal acrylic enamel -did not honor warranty for windows, left project with multiple hardware, latches and weather strips missing Before entering into contract with Melde Construction (Bernie Calcote bought business from Leon Melde in July 2016), feel free to contact us for more explanation and details. It was completely rotted out and was a safety hazard. Out of the four contractors I called, Melde was the only one who responded right away. Two of the other companies told me the balcony was beyond the scope of their abilities. As for Melde, I knew they did home renovations, so I wasn't sure if our balcony was a job they'd do. Nick was able to come out within a day or two to give us a quote, and he assured me that they could do high-end renovations, build a dog-house, and everything in between (including the balcony). They were able to start the job the following Monday. They finished on time and under the original estimate. I was very pleased with the work. I'll definitely do business with them again.

I hired this company to replace a piece of siding on my house and stain some fencing around my pool…read moreequipment. Sounds pretty simple, right? When they replaced the trim on my house, I asked them to paint the new piece before they installed it. They didn't do that, and they got paint on my stucco. Very sloppy. After fixing that, they replaced a few boards on my fence and stained the whole enclosure. They didn't use a drop cloth, and they spilled sealant/stain all over my basalt. When I pointed it out to them, they said it would "wash off." Um no, it won't. It's designed not to. A few of the boards they installed also had holes in them and need to be replaced again. They said they'd come back and fix everything, but they never came back and now they're ghosting me. Go figure. So unless you have a job that requires little to no skill, look elsewhere.
