Jim Davis Automotive

Jim Davis Automotive has been my go-to for about 25 years. Jim was still running the show back…read morethen. BJ owns the place now, and was with Jim many many years prior to the changeover. New ownership, but the same work ethic and honesty. For 13 years they helped keep my roadster running tip-top (and it's now living it's best life in Aptos with its new owner), and before that, my 250K miles Toyota. I'm glad my new Subaru is out of warranty, because I trust Jim Davis Automotive over my dealership. My wife has been bringing her Mazda3 here since about 2012 as well. Note: we're coming from 15 miles away, and live walking distance from the Subaru and Mazda dealerships; yet the 15 miles are worth it for the trustworthiness. Between four cars, I've had water pumps, timing belts, breaks, manual transmissions, air conditioners, an alternator, valves, valve cover gaskets, an engine mount, and various other bits repaired or replaced, as well as my wife (always) and me (more recently) getting our basic oil changes and servicing done here.

While they were quick to respond, they did not determine the cause of my "Service Engine Soon"…read moredashboard warning. I took it in twice. It would go off and I would drive it around several time and then it would go on again. The last time when I went to pick up my SUV they charged me $200! Oh Well, live and learn. BTW, I'm now driving around with that warning light ON not knowing what to do.

Went in on Friday for a smog on my Camry and Ravi was able to assist me and take care of my vehicle…read moredespite not having an appointment. Ravi took care of me and valued my time as a first time customer and got it done within 20 mins as he promised. Good and reasonable pricing for a smog. Other shops were charging $120 + for a simple smog.

I do NOT recommend these guys. I took my car in for a CA smog check, for which they charge $50,…read morewhich includes the mandatory DMV $8.25 transmission fee, and the station's $41.75 fee for running the test. As I later learned, the first step checks whether the car's emission monitors are set. As it happens, because my car had been in another shop for unrelated body work, apparently the battery had been disconnected during repairs. That then required the emission monitors to be reset, which happens normally during the first 100 or so miles of driving. As my mechanic later informed me, at that point a reputable smog and repair station would have told me to drive for a couple days and come back to have the test run. Instead, Palo Alto Shell charged me their entire $41.75 fee - for nothing - and said I'd have to return for a retest for an additional $50. My regular mechanic told me all this after the fact, and offered to check the monitors (for free) before I took it for another smog check. Needless to say, I'll go elsewhere for my smog check and will never go to Palo Alto Shell again for gas or any other service.

The El Camino 76 is like something out a movie about gas stations in the 60s. It's not simply a…read moreplace to fill up your tank, but is a full service station to fix anything related to your car. One two separate occasions recently, I've had to stop by the 76 due to a low tire light on in my car. At the first visit, Greg helped check the air in all my tires and filled/emptied out the air as needed. This was done absolutely free of charge. Wow. At the second visit, with a different car Allan also checked all the air, filled them and noted a nail in one of the tires. He overfilled it so I could drive it to my dealership. Patching a nail at this 76 would cost only $20. Super reasonable! The price of their gas is also highly competitive for expensive Palo Alto, Los Altos area. I love how helpful and awesome the folks at this 76 are. You've earned a loyal customer and fan for life! On a side note, this 76 is also where I fell in love with the Fisker Karma a few years back. The manager of the Fisker on El Camino was filling up gas next to me and was nice enough to chat with me after observing me drooling over his car. Unfortunately the Karma is no longer being manufactured and Fisker filed for bankruptcy. However, when they were around, they were smart enough to fill up at the best gas station in town- El Camino 76!

My vehicle was completed early and the entire transaction was flawless. If you are looking for trustworthy mechanical expertise; this hidden gem is in your backyard. The service station is clean, neat and welcoming. Everyone was friendly. Highly recommend.
