Took a ride on the brand new North Shore Rail Trail. I parked on the Mt. Sinai end of the trail in…read morea shopping center. There were a few spots that were reserved for the auto body shop, but there did not seem to be any restrictions on any other spaces. On the Wading River end of the trail there was a barren dirt area adjacent to the trail where 4-5 cars can park. The whole trail was flat with the exception of one incline that was significant enough to earn itself a warning sign. Pavement was brand new and super smooth so the ride was pleasant in that respect. There were many street crossings, especially on the west end of the trail. There seemed to be one every 1/4 mile. No records will be broken on this trail since you have to constantly stop to look for cars at each crossing. Some of the busier roads were equipped with a button to activate lights to alert motorists of crossing pedestrians/bikers. The majority of the scenery was the same throughout: low trees, bushes and large power lines on either side of the trail. There were a few things that stood out including an old LIRR station building at Rocky Point that was recently renovated, the bridge passing over Woodville Rd, and some gardens from houses along the trail that extend beyond their fences. It was surprisingly a good path to spot wildlife. Groundhogs, deer, cats, wild turkeys and bunnies were seen. The trail is a great addition to the network on LI. It's not my favorite trail in the area, but I'm glad I got to see it.

Sinai to Wading River. It is fully asphalted, level with a few long but slight inclines, well maintained (we saw maybe 3 empty bottles alongside it), and is nearly 10 miles each way with a good number of well-marked perpendicular street crossing. The only confusing part (and now, it should not be confusing, with this caveat) is that in the town of Rocky Point, the trail stops, YOU CONTINUE FOR 1.5 BLCOKS ON PRINCE STREET, and then you will again see the signs for the Rail Trail to continue on. We saw deer dining alongside the trail, which was quite nice. At the western end, you are welcome to park in the parking lot of the Rose Caracoppa Senior Center, although the trail actually starts about 2/3 of a mile west of this. Enjoy this gift of a nice run/walk/ride.

We did pass by a couple of groups on the trail, but had spent most of the time alone. There were only a handful of spots in the parking area so that limits the amount of groups that can be there at one time. The trail itself was a easy flat one mile loop around a lake/bog. It was previously used for farming Cranberries as the name suggests. You can even see the leftover of an old pump house used in the process on the side of the trail. Plenty of scenic views of the bog and two bridges that need to be crossed to complete the trail. A few signs from the parking lot to guide people to the main trail and a map at the beginning would be helpful. There was a couple of trails that led away from the main loop, but we did not check it out since we did not know where they went.

You will find several interesting plants from cedars to sundews to other types. The animal and insect life is also varied, you can expect to see different colored dragonflies, snapping turtles, sunfish and a whole host of other critters to keep your interest. If you look really carefully you can see tree stumps sticking out of the water from long cut down trees from when the place was flooded and industry took over. Bring a field guide and if you go during the warmer weather, tick repellent is required since they unfortunately inhabit the area as well. As of this post the new bridge has been built over the inlet stream so you now can walk the whole loop.

I have been horseback riding in this park for decades. I've done trail maintenance and helped find…read morelost souls. It would be nice to see more markers on the horse trails. It's a lovely place to ride with varied terain. One could ride all day if so desired. There are some steep up and down trails and some with rocks so be sure your horse is in condition and has shoes or hoof boots. There are easier rides there too if you know where to go. They have installed a mounting ramp for riders, and there is plenty of room for parking with horse trailers. Careful on the drive in as there are deep potholes.

Came here with the kids on a lazy Sunday. We brought their razor scooters (they don't have…read moreskateboards) and it worked out well because so many other kids also had scooters. The park is pretty small and doesn't have any steep half pipes or anything, but still has some fun ramps and you can also ride a circular track around if you're not a daredevil. Kids of all ages come here, we saw people ranging from 6-26. There's also a basketball court which was crowded too. It's also really close to mastic beach and right across the street from William Floyd high so I'm sure kids often hang out here during the week. One bad thing is I didn't see any bathroom facilities which I guess is common for a lot of state parks and recreations areas. Overall nice clean fun and good to get out of the house, exercise and make friends. We'll be back.

This preserve is not compliant with ADA laws. No handicapped parking, no access to the beach and…read morethe parking lot is all gravel and not handicap accessible. Pretty preserve but they need to trim the grass more on paths. Signs for ticks yet not trimming grass enough. Benches to sit but you cannot access the bench because of two foot grass. Huge pot holes on road to preserve, very neglected it's been like this for years. Spend the money and fix these things.

BEAUTIFUL trail to the water's edge, just a BIT hilly, but very manageable, and SUPER scenic. I love going to parks like this "off season," you just feel like you're the first person to have ever "discovered" it, and it's really just YOU (and in my case, my brother and S.I.L.) and NATURE at its finest.... We only had time to take the one tail to the water's edge, but even in semi-overcast, chilly late fall weather, it was slightly challenging, scenic, and DEFINITELY worth a detour, if you're in the area (and just MIGHT need to hike off a BIT of local wine and cheeeeeese!!)

This beach is the only one we found where you could simply drive up, park, and get in the water without spending a dime. The swimming area is marked off by safety ropes. There is at least one lifeguard on duty until 5. You're technically swimming in the Peconic River just before it empties into Gardiners Bay. The view is of Shelter Island, and it's quite charming.
