This visit we asked if they had a small to medium sized dog and the woman who worked there hesitated and said how about a 30 pound dog. I said sure why not, let's take a look. She brought us to a private room and let us check out Whoopie, a cute terrier mix. She stayed with us a long as we wanted to make sure that we were a good fit. We fell in love with Whoopie and filled out the paper work. The next day we got a call and were notified that we were accepted for adoption. We rushed back over as soon as we could, signed a few papers and off we went with our new 3 year old girl. The employees that work there are so nice. They answered all of our questions and made sure to give us Whoopie's favorite bed and all of her toys and a few days of food and treats. We tried other private shelters and rescue facilities previously and had bad experiences with workers/volunteers on a power trip. They made the adoption process so difficult even though we had adopted a 6 year old Jack Russell that lived with us for 10 years until he passed. So we are experienced with shelter dogs but apparently that didn't matter to the private shelters. Any way NFAWL or Southold Animal Shelter is great and the employees are very kind and will show your around if you are interested in just looking or adopting. They also have a beautiful bunch of cats, I'm allergic so no cats for me. Also guinea pigs and ferrets and maybe some other creatures. Conveniently located across the street from Greenport Brewery, so stop in after a drink or 2 and check out some beautiful animals.

Everyone who works there was friendly, knowledgeable, and were truly invested in finding good homes for the animals. They were familiar with all the residence and had a wonderful system of photos with information for each animal. They are everything you look for when looking for a shelter. I adopted 2 cats, Tiffany & Ashley after a recommendation from the staff at the shelter. The girls have lived with me now for about 6 months and everything the shelter shared about them was true. I did not know that they would call the vet to inquire about my current pets. I was rudely questioned about why my animal was not neutered yet. It was too early for me to schedule that appointment for my current pet. I was told my application is on hold until I make that appointment. I don't like that they pry into the business of my current pets with my vet without me first knowing! The shelter staff is unbelievably rude on the phone and didn't give me a chance to ask questions. What an awful experience. I will not be adopting from them. Nor will I be participating in their fundraisers and making future donations. I always supported this shelter. Not anymore!

Transparency with pet management is KEY to community confidence. Seeing a dog was not possible when I visited last week. But they offered an appointment another day, despite no other visitors there. They showed me a few photos of nice pets they have available and the adoptable are posted online. Hopefully all are listed though I couldn't see. They let me see the cats the same day.. They were polite and seemed concerned for the animals well being. So much change here so hopefully it will become a No Kill.. the residents would support that.

I have a feral who comes around to eat and had sores all over her face. I called the town and Tim told me they do not have a veterinarian on premises. Its not their responsibility. Whose responsibility is it? I was able to trap with the help of John Debacker and brought to a vet for treatment. It turns out cat is a female and has allergies to either a flea bite or wherever she is sleeping may be the bush or tree . The bottom line is there is no reason why with all of our tax dollars we pay that this shelter does not treat their release animals.. The town of Hempstead does. They have a veterinarian who treats any feral that is in need of treatment in the town of Hempstead and they are a non-kill shelter. I have a friend who lives in the town of Hempstead who had a sick feral that they feed. They brought it into the shelter. They kept the cat for a week treated it and also sent them home with special food to fatten her up . This should be done to all shelters across Long Island . I also sent a email to the senator was told they will bring this up in the next board meeting. Never heard back. Probably threw the email out. PS I asked Tim don't they have socializer's? He told me no . Why is this ? Cause they don't want anyone on the outside to see what is going on? Town of Hempstead has many volunteers that come everyday to socialize and walkers for the dogs. I cannot say enough to portray the positive experience we had at Bidawee Westhampton. We adopted…read moreour dog Thor from here and from beginning to end, this place was amazing. We began our dog search online and could already tell that Bidawee's website was superior to others and the care they seemed to have for the animals was clear. We started visiting shelters closest to our home and worked our way out. The first few experiences we had at 3 other shelters were rough to say the least, and we were beginning to wonder if we would ever find our perfect doggy match. Then came Bidawee... When we entered the facility for our 1st visit, I could already tell it was going to be a good experience and was impressed with the facility itself as well as the staff. The staff member we met with spoke with us in length and went over the dogs she felt would be the best matches for us before we walked through the facility. Then she took us through and allowed us to see each and every dog they had for ourselves. After the walk-through, we were asked which dogs (if any) stood out and who we would like to meet with one on one. My husband had two dogs in mind, but I knew in my heart that Thor was the one I wanted to see (due to the other being a younger puppy and with two younger sons at home I wanted a slightly older dog). When I asked for Thor, the staff member (Melissa) kindly informed us a bit of Thor's rough start in life which led to him being fearful of men. Melissa asked if we wouldn't mind having myself and my two sons go in the meeting room first with Thor, then introduce my husband. We of course agreed and took the visit in three steps: I went in first with my sons, then we stepped out and had my husband go in alone with Thor, then we all went in the room with Thor together. The visit went well- better than anticipated, however Thor was very nervous and shy. Instead of Melissa and staff pushing the process and rushing us out the door with a new dog, we all agreed it would be best to come back for a few more visits to make sure it was a good fit. This worked out well for all of us (especially Thor). After 3 visits, we knew we had to take Thor home because it was a match! Every visit here- from first entering the facility, to picking Thor up, was fantastic! They supplied us with everything we needed (including Thor's skin medication and fish oil supplements for his allergies) upon taking Thor home. The paperwork was thorough and well-explained. The communication via phone made every visit and entire process go smoothly (Deanna helped tremendously). Now Thor is home and already thriving! He is breaking down his fear of males, and allows my husband to hug him daily. He is adjusting so well at home and is the best dog . If you are looking for a new four-legged family member, please visit here in your search - you will not be disappointed. (Also, if you ever have extra blankets or pet products please consider donating them as the doggies love them )

Everyone was very friendly throughout the whole process. Even after taking our pup home, the staff was available for help with training. When we were there we noticed a lot of people walking into the store despite the many signs on the doors that say "APPOINTMENT ONLY" as well as on the website. From what I can tell, the staff dismissed whoever walked in professionally. I think there are people on here that take it personally that they didn't read and now can't play with the puppies. Charlie, our happy now 6 month old Havanese has had a clean bill of health since the day we took him home. He sleeps the whole night, has lots of energy, and is a happy healthy puppy!!

Vet was shocked her vaccines were up to date. She didn't even have worms. She is the best pup with the most amazing temperament and honestly being created for so long our crate training is coming along really well. So happy with my decision.
