Earlier this year, I saw Jennifer O., a dental hygienist who joins the practice when an additional professional is needed for preventive care and patient education. She is professional and friendly, and she understands patients who carry a difficult dental history. I am one of those patients. Many years ago, I was a 21-year-old college student, married to a 24-year-old Mercedes-Benz mechanic, and pregnant with our first child. At the start of our marital life, our dental insurance was limited. During my pregnancy, my back molars began to ache, and the pain became severe. We lived far from my home state, so we went to a local dentist. He took X-rays, said he saw no problem, and told me that because I was pregnant, extraction was the only treatment he would offer. No other option was given to me. One month later I was back in his chair with the same pain, and he gave me the same answer: pull another molar. Looking back, I believe that dentist did what was best for his practice, not what was best for me. That experience left me traumatized and fearful of dentists for a long time. After a lot of trial and error, I was fortunate to find Dr. Zaidi and his staff. In spring, Jennifer took the time to explain my care, showed me exactly where I needed better flossing, and even recommended a mouthwash that works far better than the brands that get all the commercial airtime. For someone who once felt powerless in a dental chair, being taught and included made all the difference. This fall, my hygienist was Kasia. She helped me address staining from my frequent use of cinnamon. I never knew that a spice I love so much could dull the look of my enamel over time, so I may be switching to cardamom, because I love the look of naturally white teeth. Kasia made sure any sensitive areas were cared for before and during my cleaning, and afterward she invited me to look over my teeth in case anything still needed attention. That small gesture told me my comfort mattered. My evaluation was performed by Dr. Bryan Alban, a talented new dentist to the practice. He reviewed my file and X-rays, recognized the steps I am taking to get my smile back, and confirmed that the plan Drs. Zaidi and Reff began for my molar implants. He agreed the steps we're currently taking are the best solution. That kind of consistency builds trust. When I decided to have a tooth extracted in the upper back area of my mouth; they presented me with a multi step treatment plan (many thousands of dollars) at which point I communicated that I had no intent to get implants etc because the gap would not be visible. Come surgery day, my surgeon went ahead and did a bone graft anyway. At the end of my follow up appointment a couple weeks later, the office manager pulled me aside and demanded over $800 additional for the bone graft. I communicated that I did not agree to that, had communicated my intentions earlier, and had only scheduled the appointment for the extraction. She quickly offered me a discount on the next step of the process (which hints to me that she knew they over reached) and I instead stated I should be discounted for the bone graft that I didn't ask for. She didn't budge, so I just paid up and found a new dentist immediately. Going to the dentist is stressful enough, the office shouldn't cause their patients undue financial strain on top of it. I was up front that I wanted extraction only and they performed extra work anyway. You can shake me down for the $800 since it's advisable to get a bone graft anyway, but it should be at a time of my choosing, not yours. If SDA reads this - a little communication and not making assumptions goes a long way!

Oakwood…read moredental arts seemed like the perfect choice; they were local. they took my insurance, and for check ups and cleanings, my out-of-pocket was absolutely nothing. They also have some pretty high-tech equipment, so it seemed a no-brainer. I made an appointment. They saw me promptly. They did a full set of x-rays. The technician could not have been more gracious and he did a terrific job cleaning my teeth. In fact, the entire staff was absolutely wonderful, until the dentist arrived. First of all he was wearing these magnifying glasses that prevent you from being able to see his eyes, which was offputting. The moment he walked in (he may or may not have introduced himself, I really don't recall) he went straight to the x-rays, announced I needed a root canal and a crown, took a quick look in my mouth and walked out. Now, I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt; he is probably overworked and I'm sure they don't have nearly enough dentists for all their patients. However, I'll be damned if I let someone who spent absolutely no time with me, make such a significant diagnosis so casually. It was time for a second opinion. I took a picture of the x-ray on my cell phone and met with my old dentist. He told me no problem he could fill it and I didn't need a root Canal. Needless to say, I am back with my old dentist and could not be happier. I don't care if I have to go 100% out-of-pocket. I'd rather have more teeth and a little less money than the other way around. And in this case, I have more teeth and more money so it's a win-win. If Oakwood dental arts suggest anything beyond a cleaning and x-rays, please do yourself a favor and get a second opinion from a local dentist who is willing to take the time to do what they can to save your teeth.
