La Tierra Hiking Trail - Warning about car break-ins at the La Cuchara parking area

    La Tierra Hiking Trail

During our annual winter road trip from Austin to Taos, we take as many opportunities as possible…read moreto stretch our legs and take in some beautiful New Mexico landscapes, especially after a great local meal. We chose one of the trails at La Tierra because it was near our location after our tasty late lunch at the original Pantry diner and would put us on the correct side of town to easily continue our journey north on Highway 84 to our lodging at Embudo (north of Espanola). From a peek at the trail system map from Santa Fe Conservation Trust (SFCT, https://sfct.org/la-tierra-trails/), it looked like the La Cuchara trailhead (off 599 aka Veteran's Memorial Highway, behind Unity Santa Fe church) would be our best option, as we could access the roughly 3-mile Ridgetop Loop that would give us a bit of elevation gain with lovely views of the mountains in every direction. If you wanna follow our path, start at the trailhead (designated by marker "TH" throughout the park) and proceed through these numbered markers: 24, 21, 17, 16, 14, 12, 11, 25, and back to the trailhead. This was a mild winter Sunday afternoon, with temps in the low-40s, breezy, and partly sunny. There was a bit of leftover snow here and there, but the single-track terrain was primarily sandy and rocky with minimal mud, a good thing, since we were in our street shoes. We encountered only 2 other parties during our 1-hour outing, one guy on a mountain bike, and a couple walking their 4 dogs (off-leash, grrrr, but thankfully, harmless). The La Tierra Trails system has over 25 miles within 1.5k acres and is rated for multi-use by hikers, cyclists, and horses, plus a small section for motorcycles and ATVs at Buckman Track. Trail runners can also enjoy this trail system, with caution for the abundant cacti. Mountain bikers and BMX riders can have extra fun with some technical trail sections, jumps, and terrain obstacles created just for them; they even get an annual event during Santa Fe Bike Month (August) here, the La Tierra Torture race https://www.core-crew.com/la-tierra-torture-4-27 . Good to know: There are no restrooms or other comfort facilities (at least near the trailhead and path we took). We did notice signs about the risk of car break-ins and shattered window glass on the ground, but no one broke into our car while we were on the trail.

We loved hiking out here, nice and secluded, well marked trails that were easy to follow. All the…read moretrail markers had the full map to help you orient. Very good scenery. There were a couple places that were a little steep but most of the trail was very reasonable grade wise. We took a two mile or so loop from the calabasas trailhead, but there are a bunch of different trail heads to start from and options to go. Some are horse and bike friendly, some not. Bring water with you! There isn't any place to get it nearby.

Started at the rentals, they already had my skis and poles out and labelled, went up and got my boots, made a quick exchange for a size up- ski boots are hard to put on! Then rented a locker for our shoes (which when we came back proved to be unnecessary since everyone just leaves their shoes on the ground) Walked over to the lesson area and got placed in a group of beginners based on our zero skill level. They had a few other groups for those with more experience. We went through a ton of drills- one foot in, then the other, then will both. Worked on pizza/French fry positioning, wedge turns and horizontal climbs. Then headed to the magic carpet- would have been nice to be told what to expect when exiting - just stay loose and upright and walk out when off the belt. With 30 mins left of the lesson, I asked if we were going to go up the beginners lift, the instructor was psyched to take the three of us older kids The instructor slowed the lift for getting on and off to make it easier. Then taught us how to use the wedge turns to navigate down the mountain. Had a great time and feeling super accomplished! Couple notes- I bought ski pants/bib thing, went with a few layers on top with a rain jacket over, good gloves and regular sunglasses. Felt very comfortable and warm and happy I didn't spend any more on gear. For the food, you'll be better off bringing your own cooler. You can eat outside food in the lodge and they don't have alcohol, so if you're looking for a midday beer, you should bring some with you. I should have just got the beginner lift tickets, I wasn't ready after one lesson for anything else Overall great day and would totally come back!

We'd never considered taking our daughter here until she was invited by a friend and, surprise surprise, she loved it. Yes, #girlsride too. It's disturbing to think I'd never considered a bike park a good spot for her pandemic play, but there you have it. For a public resource, this little lot of dirt is pretty rad. Offering three distinct levels of riding courses -- beginner, experienced and expert -- the area is nicely maintained, with a number of good, shady trees on the north end. There's also a small balance course, also well maintained, and lots of seating for lame-o dudes like me who already cracked some ribs trying this stuff as a kid. Covered picnic tables, open dawn 'till dusk, free to the public, what's not to love? Well, the male/female ratio, actually -- it's about 90/10. Time to change that, kiddo, let's load up the bike and go.

There's a beginner/kids pump track that is perfect for those who are wanting to get their feet wet. We stayed in this area however it is clear this park accommodates beginner to expert riders. Helmets are required. Most follow the rule and some don't. I would recommend having kids wear knee pads at minimum. I didn't realize this and my 6 year old got scratched up. Gloves wouldn't hurt either. My kids loved it and didn't want to leave. Bring snacks and drinks. No restroom. Have fun!

Post purchase of several items, the (presumably) owner pulled in and informed us that this is now a campground and we needed to move along. We had been in the, empty, parking lot for 20 minutes. In 5 years of nearly full-time van life, we have never experienced such rudeness. Glad you showed your true colors. A business to AVOID!!! Wow!! A reply. And not an apology. For example, "I'm sorry I reacted so swiftly. I should have popped in to my place of business first and learned from my staff that you two (only) folks in the parking lot are actually customers." Instead, "Heading off problems, as we had set up camp." Set up camp? Ya, we put our dog out with food and water on a rope. We saw your numerous "no dogs in store" signs. And setting up camp from 9:15-9-39 AM? Come on. Just not a good, customer first business man. Many times in various states around the country, bike/ski shops have even asked us if we would like to, "fill up our water? Or please, take your time. Need any tools? Want some MTB trail recommendations?" Not expected, but good business and really nice. Especially on a Monday morning when we are the only customers you had. I talked to Clemente, learned he does a lot of repairs, and decided to give him a try because his is also the closest bike shop I know to my south County home. I didn't have long to wait. My "Bicycle from Hell," which has had at least a dozen flats in the less than two years I've owned it, had another one. This time, the stem had come out of the tube entirely and was lying on my garage floor. So it took the whole bike in to Clemente and also asked him to give the bike a "tune up" and fix some slippage in gears six and seven (out of eight) on the right-hand shifter. While I had lunch at Joe's he gave me a new tube with goop and managed to fix the shifting issue beautifully. The gears have never worked so smoothly and reliably since I bought the bike. And he gave me some advice about how to save my tubes, by not obsessively checking the pressure before every ride. Best of all, the charge was only in the mid fifties, including the new tube, or less than half of what the uptown bike shops charge for a tuneup. From now on Sirius will be my go-to repair shop.
