I've gone to River Place OB/GYN since I moved to Austin nearly 6 years ago now. Since my first visit, I knew that this office would be my home base for all of my women's care needs , no matter how far I needed to drive. I have always recommended this office to my friends, as the office is beautiful, the staff are friendly, and the care is next level. Some years ago, I voiced my concerns to Dr. Shepherd about potentially having PCOS. She took my claim seriously and gave me a formal diagnosis, which is more than I can say about other doctors I had raised this concern to. The past couple of months, I have been going through an ectopic pregnancy, which was at first thought to be a miscarriage. Dr. Shepherd and Dana Wicker were the two primarily responsible for my care during this time. These two women were incredibly professional, informative, and diligent in care when it came to my health and the potential risks this could cause. In addition, they were kind and compassionate as my husband and I went through our loss and the health anxiety it caused. I can say with full confidence that while this experience was incredibly difficult and heartbreaking, it was made better by the bedside manner and care provided by this office. All that being said, I will continue to be a regular patient here and recommend to anyone looking for an OB/GYN. read more

I came in to have my Kyleena IUD removed because I wanted to get off hormones after nearly a decade and reconnect with my body. When I explained that, Dr. Thoppil dismissed my reasoning and told me it 'wouldn't make much of a difference.' He quickly shifted the focus to whether I was sexually active or trying to get pregnant, without asking anything about how I'd been feeling or why this decision was important to me. Hormonal birth control--even lower dose options like Kyleena--can still come with a range of physical and emotional symptoms that are deeply personal. I was hoping for a conversation rooted in care, curiosity, and respect, but instead I left feeling unheard and invalidated. Women deserve more thoughtful and empathetic care when making informed decisions about their reproductive health. read more

This was my second time seeing this doctor and will be my last. Both appointments were soooo rushed. I have never had such a quick pelvic exam in all the years I have been seeing a gyno (since I was 17 and am now 46) so I know what an exam is supposed to be. You blink and it's over. He asked me zero questions about what I was there for and I had to ask the nurse to send him back in so I could ask a question about my irregular periods since I am starting perimenopause. During my first appointment I appreciated that he asked me about my other health issues, but during this appointment he literally gave me medical advice about it - suggesting I try GLP1s for my heart failure! Even my cardiologist (who focuses on the "plumbing" won't give me medical advice on the "electrical" side because it isn't what he is trained in. Upon some basic online research, GLP1s can be very harmful for someone with my condition and EF number Every time I go in he is also pushing that I get other things done there like my mammogram. They frame it as convenience, but after the GLP1 suggestion it all feels like a money grab with very little concern for women's health. My mother died of ovarian cancer so I cannot continue seeing someone whom I feel is not thorough. Not for me. read more

Dr. Thoppil didn't care to listen to what I was experiencing. It was almost like he was just talking down to me through the entire appointment. After just talking with him, I decided to not go through with an exam (because I clearly wasn't comfortable anymore) and just did some blood work. I also called ahead of time to verify that they took care credit because I was paying out of pocket and they assured me that they did. When I go to check out, they say it's not working and I'll just have to pay off my debit. It was literally the entire reason I chose this place, because they took care credit. To top this off, when I tried to pay for my lab testing that I got another bill for afterwards, whoever they were using for their portal to pay.. it would not let me pay it. Wasn't on my account and the letter didn't include an invoice number. It literally won't let me pay it. So now I have to take more time out of my day to call and try to get ahold of them after already spending an hour online giving them all of my private information. And this is to give them more money! I wish I could take all of this back. read more

I've gone to a few OBs and midwives in LA and Austin before going with Dr Thoppil and couldn't be happier with my experience. He has a no nonsense approach, and I found it refreshing especially when I was switching providers during my pregnancy. I never waited more than 10 min for my appts, and he was always able to answer my questions and cut through a lot of misinformation. I now have a healthy 2 month old and would definitely recommend! read more

I attempted to endure a uterine biopsy however they gave me zero pain meds and the dr kept jamming the tube into my cervix which hurt insanely bad. I left without getting the procedure done. They have since harassed me at least seven times a day trying to get me to set up my next appointment. I have responded with please cancel every single time and they just continue. I cannot say enough about Dr. Shepherd and her staff. Every single person who works in this office is WONDERFUL. They are kind, great communicators, caring, engaging... you really can't find a better team to make you feel well taken care of. Dr. Shepherd is genuinely kind, her bedside manner is impeccable and she really takes her time answering any questions you have. Our family adores her. Dr. Thoppil conducted a vaginal exam that was so rough, I was left bleeding and having to wear a light pad for over two days. No compassion nor did he stop when I asked him to stop. Besides the pain and strange infliction, it was a vaginal exam I had never had performed with any previous OB. Once I looked at this lowest ratings on Google and yelp, I realized, this Doctors bedside manner is atrocious and was not something I had just uniquely experienced. I also noticed as I tried getting my issues addressed with this office, the reviews disappeared. His MA acknowledged my pain during the exam and also mentioned this tends to happen with him. From the time he entered the room, he seemed creepy and arrogant. I had other concerns he talked down and did not want to address. I have never had such a violent OB experience. I have lived all over the country, and have never had a painful nor strange vaginal exam. He clearly does not know what he is doing. Further, he is not experienced with female genitalia whatsoever. He did not order the STD testing that was needed, adding negligence to his "medical" approach. He also weirdly referred to an issue I mentioned as a "little incident." There have been horror birth stories I have read/heard about as well from Dr. Thoppil's ex-patients. Having a medical degree does not guarantee intentions AND the bar has been set pretty low in medical schools across the country for 20 years, so this does not mean they are properly trained. I have had multiple negative experiences here but continued to give them a chance because they were close. I will never return. First, they failed to update my insurance and I had to find previous information on my own to help with their billing. Luckily, I had the records. Second, I had the Norplant arm implant replaced and it became infected. Instead of treating it like a follow up on a procedure they completed my insurance and copay were paid as a sick visit. I had to go through 2 rounds of antibiotics and return again because my primary care was not licensed to remove the arm implant. It was a terrible experience. 2 years later I decided to try again and think it was water under the bridge. I'm in the waiting room I waited over 30 minutes while they called 4 people who came in after me to the back before me. I even heard 2 say their appointment me were after me. I was just about to leave when they called me back. Them asked me all the questions I just completed online and failed to give me any confidence for thing's moving forward. It is very hard to draw blood from me so she recommended test I should ask my primary care to complete. Did not order the labs herself. It was just such a poor brush off experience. After being concerned about not having a period for a year I left feeling just as concerned. I guess I will take the advice of following up with my primary care physician. If you choose to go here make sure your insurance is updated and billed correctly. Find out what happens if a procedure doesn't work out as planned or an implant site becomes infected. Even if your feeling frustrated make sure you get your questions answered. But honestly, I'd just steer clear. I feel very frustrated and disappointed yet again. A terrible experience for me personally I was treated like I had an accident when it wasn't the case and also it was messy in the bathroom and I didn't like the way the doctor spoke to me rushing me calling me slow poke. They use a specialty Laboratory that is very expensive even with insurance. Just to have one screening(most of which I didn't need) ended up being $1,500. I went in for an unnecessary procedure and Dr. Shepherd was well aware of my medical history and tried to perform this extremely painful procedure for quite a bit of time and then proceeded to tell me they couldn't do it. This was after I paid an extra $100 out of pocket for nitrous(laughing gas). Well the nitrous machine they use makes the patient hold the mask securely on your face while you have to try to take in deep deep breaths to make the machine make a certain sound. It was absolutely ridiculous. Most of the time it didn't work. Then I suffered with pain for 3 days after all with no test accomplished and zero results. Dr. Shepherd seemed to have zero empathy for me. She just started rattling the next steps off to me as quickly as possible right after I just sat up from this seriously painful attempted procedure. Then proceeded to tell me they use private anesthesiologists(if you need to be put under for any in office procedures) out of network with 'all' insurances. I needed a procedure and to be put under i was quoted $700-800, of course I declined. They also did an ultrasound and now don't seem to have my results. Just wow. I think menopausal woman are not treated very kindly at this office. They are just money hungry as well. Very quick to schedule tests and procedures you don't even need. menopausal symptoms that are interfering in living our lives seem to be unimportant and take a back seat. There is so much more but I want to share but need to keep some things private. read more

Dr Thoppil is truly one of the best doctors I've ever encountered. Not only he is always one step ahead of everything, he also possesses great sense of humor and is always upbeat and enthusiastic. He is the one who listens and hears! My second pregnancy was high risk with me being emotionally traumatized by the first one (also high risk). Dr T was calm (which is contagious ), yet he took into account every little detail. Not only I carried full term, I also had super fast and easy recovery from a C-section performed by him. Where do I even start?! Dr. Thoppil at Riverplace OB/GYN is seriously the best. For starters, he is friendly and has a great sense of humor. I don't think I have ever had an appointment where I have not laughed about something he has said. I am an anxious person by nature, and I always feel comfortable there. In addition, I appreciate how reachable Dr. Thoppil is. As a patient, you can send messages via the patient portal. Dr. Thoppil takes the time out of his insanely busy schedule to personally respond. Dr. Thoppil delivered my first baby in 2019. Throughout the pregnancy, I always felt like I was receiving top level care. He took precautions when necessary and came up with a birth plan that worked for all of us. I can also say the same about my postpartum care. I am now pregnant with baby #2 and due in December. There was a health concern that came up and Dr. Thoppil addressed it appropriately. I have some experience with Dr. Shepherd, and she is amazing too. Just like the doctors of this practice, the nurses and front desk staff are the best of the best. The ladies working in the front are always on point, polite, and friendly. I don't even know where to start. First and foremost the scheduling system is absolutely horrible. Every single appointment/follow up I've made at this office has had to be rescheduled multiple times due to office errors/double bookings. My first two appointments were incredibly rushed and I barely spent any time the doctor/did not feel like I could advocate for myself or my health needs. During my second appointment (which had to be rescheduled 2x) Dr. Thoppil denied my request to do a full thyroid panel saying it was unnecessary and minimized the effectiveness of eastern medicine (I told him I was seeing a fertility acupuncturist). I was told to start taking medication and follow up in 6 weeks for new blood work/to follow up. I wasn't able to get an appt for 6 weeks but could for 7 weeks which would have been this week. They just called me and told me I needed to be rescheduled (of course). I denied wanting to be rescheduled and I will be seeing a new OBGYN. After the doctor refused to do a full thyroid panel I got a second opinion from an endocrinologist who did complete testing and gave me a different diagnosis than what Dr. Thoppil did and increased my medications significantly. Based on other reviews I think that because I'm not currently pregnant I'm not a priority at this office. If you are having difficulty TTC or having other non-pregnancy related gynecological issues I'd suggest going elsewhere. read more

If you like 5 min appointments where the practitioner is half way out the door answering your last question and they don't do a thorough work up to find the root of your problem, go here. Dana Wicker was short with me, shoving me on to a specialist in Buda! I called the office to tell them she referred me to a doctor who's 45 mins away! Dr Wicker said she didn't know any other rheumatologist in Austin so I'd have to find one and ask her to refer me to them. What in the world??? She also wasn't thorough in my annual exam... she didn't tell me what vitamins or supplements I should be taking while going through menopause. I don't know my vitamin D levels etc. They honestly don't care about your health here. Just quickly pushing you through the system to get paid. You can sense their disinterest. I told them I was leaving because I was unsatisfied with their service. Then they sent me a letter saying they refuse to see me anymore and my records would be canceled in 30 days! Unbelievable. I've switched OB's. I now go to Dr. Ghosh at Austin Regional Clinic. She speaks to me at length and explains everything in perfect detail. She is looking out for my best interest and I appreciate her and her caring staff so much! read more

A coworker suggested I check out River Place and I cannot thank her enough. Dr Thoppil and his staff are the best in the business. They are prompt, kind, discreet, and truly there to help. From the moment you check in to the time you leave, you are in the best hands. They are considerate in their practice and make sure you are in and out of there in the quickest yet most efficient way possible. They want to make sure they solve the issue at hand without a second trip. Prescription refills, appointments, and billing are a breeze through their portal. Dr. Thoppil even takes the time to answer any questions you may have prior to or in-between appointments through their portal as well. I am very disappointed with my experience with Dr. Thoppil. I had my first daughter in California with a great OB, she was breach and I had to have a c-section. With baby #2, she was head down and I explained to Dr. Thoppil how badly I wanted a VBAC. He said I would be able to if I'm dilated by week 39 and that if I go past week 39, I would have to have a c-section. He NEVER said that I had an option to deliver naturally if I went to an OB at St. David's. The day I delivered, I had a huge lump above my scar. Which I didn't have after the delivery. I went to see him 2 weeks after delivering and he said it was a keloid and that it would go away. He also said that I gained weight from my first visit at 6 weeks--which I hadn't. He called me at 4 months after delivery and suggested that I get cool sculpting. That was a red flag for me especially since he hasn't seen me in a few months so I saw another OB. She confirmed a VBAC would've been an option and that he didn't stitch properly. So I decided to see Dr. Thoppil to let him know the mistakes he made. He said that he never mentioned that my scar was a keloid, he said he offered an option for cool sculpting since he knew I wasn't happy with the overhang. I went to cool sculpting spa and they said it wouldn't be a good option and it would make the scar tissue harder. I told him that my new OB recommended physical therapy and then he said oh yeah I would've suggested that to. The only thing he agreed to is that my pregnancy weight was the same. It's been 9 months now and everyday I regret that I went to see him and that I could've delivered naturally and although he knew how badly I wanted a VBAC he didn't refer me to another OB. It's all about the $$$ I guess. read more

I moved to Austin just a few weeks before discovering I was pregnant with number two and was recommended to River Place. Dr. Shepherd has been my OB since then and it has been the most amazing experience. I have never had a doctor that seemed to truly care the way Dr. Shepherd does. Early in my pregnancy I was afraid I was having a miscarriage and I called the office- I was told I could come in right away. I received an ultrasound and an exam within 15 minutes of getting to the office. (And baby was safe!). Dr. Shepherd was so kind to me and wanted to ease my mind right away. I'm so thankful to have a doctor who really cares and always take times to address my concerns. The nurse I always see is so kind to me every visit and is on top of her game. Also Bre, who takes all my blood draws, is so kind and amazing at her job. I have bad reactions to needles sometimes and she always makes me feel so calm and never misses a vein- she's a pro! I have also seen Dr. Topphil once when I came in for an issue and he was very kind and good at his job. The whole office is great! The ONLY downside to this practice, that I've experienced, is some issues with billing. In the grand scheme of things I can let that go (especially after it is resolved!) if it means I'm getting top of the line medical care. All-in-all I HIGHLY recommend River Place OBGYN to anyone looking for great patient care. read more

This is, hands down, the best medical practice I have been do in Austin and perhaps ever. Dr. Thoppil and his staff are accommodating, friendly, and knowledgeable. The front desk team offered an appointment at a later time when I was running late due to traffic. Not many medical practices are willing to do that, period. I had brought work with me, expecting an hour wait as I've become accustomed to - but I was in the waiting room for maybe ten minutes. Dr. Thoppil is down-to-earth and knows his stuff. Nobody likes their yearly exam, but with him as your doctor you know that you're getting the best care possible and it was the least painful annual I've had. I cannot say enough about Dr. Thoppil and his staff at RiverPlace OB/GYN. No, he didn't spend all day with me at every appointment. But he answered every question and made all the right calls. I had a giant fibroid tumor which we knew would complicate things. So, when it came time for my delivery he had a plan in place that saved my uterus and possibly my life. We wanted to avoid a risky surgery, but knowing that might not be possible, he made sure he had a specialist surgeon on standby ready to help with the additional surgery I ended up needing to safely remove the tumor and save my uterus. I have a healthy baby boy and the chance to give him a little brother or sister in the future thanks to Dr. Thoppil and his team. read more

I'm currently 24 weeks into my first pregnancy, and I am so glad I chose River Place OB/GYN for my maternity care. Dr. Thoppil and staff are wonderful and I have only had positive experiences! Dr. Thoppil has been excellent at handling my sometimes crazy "first time mom" panicked moments, and is never judgmental. He listens to each concern, and even when I'm not in the office, is great about responding quickly to questions in the patient portal. I also appreciate that he is honest and thorough each visit, as does my husband. Had an appointment today for my annual exam... my first time to this office. Very gracious reception and nursing staff. The doctor was friendly and calm, took time to answer my questions... I didn't feel like my apt was a distraction to his busy day! While I can't say it's like this every time, today I had no wait times from the time I arrived to the end of my visit. I'm not very comfortable with doctors' offices and so I typically put visits off. I don't think this will be a visit that I dread in the future. read more

Updated Review: I appreciate the response and would like to comment. I have worked in both private and non-profit medical and mental health facilities, this financial policy is not a standard in this industry. I have a hard time with the comparison of a car rental or hotel, to healthcare. In fact, I weep at that analogy. I have worked on legislation to help increase Medicaid wages for healthcare providers and am well-versed on insurance contracts and HIPAA regulations. I, most certainly, do not need to be "mansplained" about it. I would also like to point out that this policy was not disclosed in its entirety until after my appointment. I'm curious about what industry asks for a credit card to be authorized for an undisclosed amount. Perhaps, more transparency would have eliminated this issue all together. Best of luck. Review the financial policy very carefully!!! The staff was friendly, and making a new patient appointment was easy. I filled out my paperwork on line and thought I was all ready to go. I get to the office and am asked to sign a waiver to leave a credit card on file. I inquired about this and was told that the card could be used for a balance that my insurance didn't pay, etc. I wasn't very comfortable with this and explained that I prefer to check my EOB's to make sure everything is processed. It was implied that this was not an option to waive, and I would have an opportunity to discuss with them prior to my card being charged. I, reluctantly, signed. Two days later I get an email stating that I had authorized them to charge up to $1500.00! Wait, what??? It stated I have an option to withdraw my authorization, so I emailed and ask for that to be taken off my record, and to find out how much I would owe at my upcoming procedure. I get a reply that if I take my card off file I am required to pay their self-pay rates, even though I assigned my insurance benefits to them, and was ready to pay the contracted rate at the time of service. I am a healthcare administrator and have never seen any other office handle collections in this manner. I guess they don't trust that their patients can pay the bill, very likely in River Place. Bottom line, money is what matters. This is an infuriating policy that puts their pocketbook over patient care. I liked the doctor, she was friendly and helpful. But, this is not the type of office that I can give money to. read more

Love this office! I have been seeing Dr Shepherd for years and love all the staff! We especially love the nurse we always work with (hate that I can't remember her name!). It is a clean and well run office! I rarely wait longer than 5-10 minutes in the waiting room which I have waiting over 30+ in offices over the years. They respect your time! This place is as good as it gets. Dr. Shepherd helped me to manage a complicated pregnancy with patience, compassion and skill. I had some complexity during delivery and her quick action and expertise probably saved my baby's life. Baby and I both came out of a scary experience with no issues or injuries during a tricky delivery because Dr. Shepherd saved the day. Simply put: this is the doctor you want during your pregnancy and in the delivery room. Also, the staff in her practice are superb. Ariel, Tiffany, Bre, Laura... everyone is sharp, friendly, on top of things and funny. The sonographers are also fantastic. So no matter who you encounter it's excellent experience. Dr. Thoppil and his staff are awesome! If I could give more than five stars I would. You'll never step foot in another Doctors office and feel more welcomed by everybody than you will here. I'm always greeted with smiles, asked how I've been or what's new. Dr. Thoppil is extremely professional, prompt and thorough. He's a straight shooter, but delivers with tact. His bedside manner couldn't be more professional. And to be honest, it irks me to see a few of these reviews with long-term patients that "loved" his service give him a one star review based off of what seems like some sort of a technicality. I've addressed my own concerns with Dr. Thoppil and he was MORE than fair with my situation. Perhaps speak with him first. You never know what a conversation will do for you. I also always envisioned delivering in a birthing center and even took a tour, but Dr. Thoppil and his staff make me feel so comfortable, I completely deviated from the original birthing plan I had for years. Dr. Thoppil's practice feels very similar to a birthing center, In that you really get to know the staff and small setting, which makes you feel right at home. He's on board with the birthing plan you desire and supports it. I've never felt pushed into a different vision that I have for this birth. I look forward to delivering my baby girl in June! I really can't say enough about him and his staff. It's nearly impossible for me to single out just one, because they're all simply that awesome! Despite their extremely busy days filled with patients, You really will never feel rushed or like you're just another number. They work so well as a team! I have been going to river place since I was 18, they were my first OB/GYN appointment. As a scared teen this could not haven't been the more perfect place to have your first check up. Dr. Shepard is an exceptional physician, not only does her warming personality permeate the room, but she manages to make you comfortable in the most uncomfortable situations. I started seeing Dr. Shepherd early in my first pregnancy and really appreciate her care through 25 weeks. I am transferring mainly because we are planning on a birth at a birthing center and Riverplace OBGYN doesn't offer that option. One thing I really loved about Dr Shepherd is she always took my and my baby's health seriously and if any issues arose she made sure we were checked out right away. Being a FTM it's important to feel like your doctors have your back when it's most important and that was definitely the case. I also met Dr Thoppil once at the women's center and he was super sweet - loved his personality and he was very thorough checking everything when we were worried about preterm labor. The front office staff is super friendly and helpful, including the office manager. She helped me on more than one occasion answer any billing questions I had. I only give 4 stars because I wasn't a huge fan of one of the nurses. I'm not sure if it was just me, but it seemed like she gave me attitude and made a few comments that left a bad taste in my mouth. Sort of condescending. I understand they work with lots of women, but no need to make an already hormonal pregnant woman feel bad/stupid for asking questions. read more

I was concern, when my GP recommended Dr. Toppli; I had been seen by a female OB/GYN for several years. Dr. Toppli made me feel at ease and took the time to listen to my concerns. Going to a gynecologist is comfortable for to being with however Dr. Toppli made the experience a lot more tolerable; his staff is just as kind and respectful as Dr. Toppli. read more

I've seen both Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Thoppil for two different pregnancies and love them both! They also have two of the best nurses I've ever had the pleasure of coming across (Laura & Tiffany). They are truly a wonderful practice and know what they are doing no matter what situation you bring them. I've had many complications and each one was treated with genuine care and concern. read more
