    Chai Latte

As far as breakfast spots go, for me it's hard to beat River Kitchen! And this place is.. you guessed it, by a river.. And in NZ, when you are by water of any kind, you make some new friends called "sandflies". They will bite you. It's inevitable and it's usually just one bite, but it itches bad. So try to cover up if you can! They seem to especially love white American males. My other friends were untouched.. ANYWAYS! Are you still hungry? Because they always are...LOL Been here twice. The first time was after they finished serving breakfast, which ends at 11:30. That hangover life... But lucky for me they still had one breakfast item on their lunch menu! Eggs Benedict! When I saw Eggs Benedict on the menu it wasn't a ! for me. Just an eh. I've never been a huge fan of it, but after having it here.. I'm a new fan! You can get this with bacon($18), mushrooms, or smoked salmon. It was cooked perfectly. Here in NZ they like to cook their bacon streaky, a bit softer, less crispy. YES! I ordered a Chai Latte as well, best part of the meal! The first time I got it sweet. The second time, sweet with some spice in it. Both times great. So let's talk about ordering. Noticed a few Yelpers who seemed to struggle with this. They have indoor and outdoor seating. If you want a drink and food, I would recommend going inside to order your drink first and grab a menu, they will come to your seat to take your food order when you are ready. If you walk up from outside, sit outside and never let anyone know you have shown up, it's a bit hard for them to keep track of it all. It's one guy who handles all the outside tables but he does a really good job. You have to remember that NZ restaurant staff don't get tipped. So don't expect to get a water refill every two minutes and your server asking you how everything is?? You already asked me this five minutes ago Dave... The food still tastes good. I'm still doing fine... Food is great. Coffee is great. Location is great. Staff is great. Sandflies are not great.. But, I would deal with them again and again to eat here! 5 stars!

Inside of restaurant. Take in the counter - salads and desserts.

My wife and I split: Fish Cakes Benedict Roasted vegetables salad Beet Salad. The Fish Cakes were Devine and the egg was a nice added benefit. Fresh fish always tastes better. The salads were a perfect match for the fish. All and all, would highly recommend this restaurant and these dishes. Great work and friendly attentive wait staff as well. Be sure to take advantage of their WiFi. The location is on the river with wonderful views to chill with.

Even my sweetest of sweet teeth had had enough of the sugary pancake breakfasts I'd been eating…read morethroughout our trip, so I homed in on the "pan con tomate" at the Morri Street Cafe for a savory breakfast refresher and quickly fell in love. This is your dish if you aren't an egg person but still want something savory and complex, but there are plenty of other great options too. The Morri Street Cafe was spacious, low-key, and perfect for either a quick grab-and-go or a more leisurely morning wake up.

On our drive back to Christchurch we stopped here after many recommendations from travel books…read more Morrison Street Cafe is a low-key, simply decorated cafe that caters more to the stomach than the eyes. Touted as more of a locals spot, there is a community board on the wall and the artwork on the wall is often for sale. When there is a gap in available artwork and the walls are bare, the space can get particularly loud, especially with young children and groups of people dining. The service is still pretty efficient despite the crowds. We had a trim flat white, an Americano, the eggs Benedict with local bacon and the salted caramel & strawberry pancakes. The eggs benedict was spot on perfection with an incredible light but well-prepared hollandaise to top. The eggs were cooked just right and the bacon had a slight crisp to the edges. The eggs Benedict came heaped with spinach and chives which added a great flavor and added touch of healthiness on top of the soft bagel the Benedict was served on. Needless to say, the plate was licked clean. The pancakes were made with a wholemeal batter and were extremely fluffy. The pancakes were topped with fresh strawberries and a rhubarb compote that was bright, tart and totally complemented the salted caramel sauce that was served in lieu of syrup. If you've never had pancakes with caramel sauce, you must try it here. I had my dish served with yoghurt but cream is also an option. The prices are reasonable and the service is quick and friendly. If you're stopping in Nelson, you absolutely must find your way over to Morrison Street Cafe.
