This is a lovely place to stay! Very historic, with wonderful memorabilia from the town and the B&O Railroad. The house itself is wonderful, old, and beautifully and meticulously restored with lovely antiques. It is quite charming and the owner has great taste.
Rowlesburg itself is a quiet and very small town with significant B&O history, so train aficionados will love staying here and should plan to talk with the owner, who is a retired professor who knows the town history first hand. Some will say the town has seen better days - and it has - but it is also nostalgic, especially for railroaders and nature lovers (the natural scenery is beautiful, with mountains on three sides and a "U" in the river that embraces the town).
On weekends during most of the year, Rowlesburg's former high school (go River Lions!) is open and has a number of interesting things to stop and see - a surprisingly good WWII Museum, a railroad museum, a town library, a shoppe filled with fun trinkets to look at (you might find a deal!), and a little cafe. Be sure to go to the park right across from the high school, too - it is right on the Cheat River and absolutely stunning, with a great playground for the kids to play, and a little diner that you might catch open. Or you can bring a picnic - there are loads of picnic tables, too.
Rowlesburg is also a great stop for a little fishing or a quick dip in the river, if you are so inclined. People also tube and kayak there. We live in Virginia, but visit at least once a year and I love staying at the River Side Lodge. Highly recommend. read more
