I did bring my sound machine which I am sure helped a little. Overall it was really quiet. More quite than some 5 star hotels I have stayed in. Easy check in and out. You do not even have to interact with anyone if you do not want to. The restaurant below the rooms was good as well. I think our room was right over the kitchen so we could smell food at times. There are a lot of stairs and the family suite we rented was on the third floor. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The inn keepers were friendly and accommodating. The only thing I wished for were a couple of chairs in the room so we could put our shoes on, and more seating area on the upper deck would also be nice. The inn only offers continental breakfast and access to local places to eat were sparse, but we made do. The owners also have other properties in town, like the campground and the local boat livery for trips on the River. Nearby, you have access to trails, Cathedral State Park, and Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan and Snowshoe ski. All are reasonably close by. The price was reasonable as well. It's not one of the big fancy chain hotels, so if you expect that, you will be disappointed, but if small-town peace and quiet and comfort in a historic location is for you, I recommend the River Lodge Inn. Our first morning we had stimulating conversation. We learned about the house, about their lives and had engaging conversation. The owners had kayaks and took us up river in order for is to do a "Huck Finn" type of lazy day on the river. For those looking to get away from urban cityscapes, Black Bear Resort is a year round retreat…read moreoffering tranquility and scenic views for hiking, horse riding, skiing, hunting, fishing, etc. There resort is surrounded by nature preserves a short drive away. Located just outside "downtown" Davis, WV these cozy cabins could accommodate a family work small children and perhaps up to four adults. My partner and I rented the cabin for a most relaxing winter wonderland getaway. All you can use dried firewood is nearly stacked under the cabin for use inside a chipper fireplace. Bring your own kindling! You'll certainlyl want to spend the better part of the stay lounging in the warmest place in the cabin during the winter months. There's a complete kitchen with an electric stove/oven, coffee maker, toaster, microwave, fridge. Bring your cooking knives, as theirs are lacking in quality (but still functionally mostly work). Kitchen drain is slow, and don't throw food down the drain as they're is no disposal. West Virginia isn't known for providing consistent safe and clean drinking water, so if also bring enough gallons for your drinking needs. There's a washer/dryer combo in the bathroom, but the shower drain is slow enough you'll want to take a lickety-split shower despite the water pressure being good and heat nice. The cabin comes complete with enough soaps/detergents to get you through a few days but it probably doesn't hurt to bring more for an extended stay. Downstairs sees a jacuzzi tub which opens to the back porch and unimpeded nature views. The water pressure and tank heater is barely enough to fill the tub to nice and hot temperatures, and you can only fill it up about once a day, since that seems to be the water heaters capacity. T-mobile cell phone coverage was nearly non existent but my partner had good success with AT&T. Wifi in the house is strong enough to allow for video streaming as desired, and you can even semi-confortably WFH as your needs go. This place sees snow! No joke, it's to your advantage to bring a four-wheel drive or snow chains because the snow easily clears ankles. The groundskeepers do their best, but your car will find ice, so some experience with snow driving is strongly recommended. "Downtown" offers a few dining options, but if you want to do your own cooking you'll have to trek 45-min through country roads to get to the Kroger in the next town over (or just being enough ingredients from the get-go) All in all an excellent and inviting place to snuggle up with a loved one and a good launching point to experience some of that "wild and wonderful" west Virginia

I had to sweep and vacuum because of all the crude, dust and hair. All the light and fan fixtures had enormous amount of dust on them. There were towels left in the dryer. And don't get me started on the mold in the shower. The information sheet on the refrigerator says it a privately owned unit and the owner pays a fee for cleaning, yet I also got charged a $75 cleaning fee. Who gets this money and doesn't clean?? I spoke the gentleman at the office and showed him pictures and he agreed it was unacceptable. He took notes and my contact information and advised management would contact me on Monday (2 days). We'll, after a week and numerous emails I still have not heard from management of Black Bear. Better Business Bureau is my next course of action they obviously don't care about customer satisfaction. Blacked Bear, you have definitely went down hill since the newest management took over. I feel bad for the folks who actually own this unit.

TFSR - Timberline Four Seasons Realty - is the management company for a large number of high-end properties located in Canaan Valley. The house we rented, WinterHaven #90, was a large, open 5-bedroom pivately owned property located at the top of the mountain. The house seemed to be be fairly new and was very well kept, with most of the parts in great order. Here's the GOOD: hardwood and granite, throughout. 6 bathrooms. Two complete laundry rooms. Massive stove and kitchen area. Vaulted ceilings. Woodsy, ski themed art consistent throughout. Furnishings were amazing, beautiful leather couches and three stonework fireplaces. Large hottub, under roof. Two wine refrigerators. Two microwaves. Big dishwasher (but mine is an 18-inch, so what do I know??). Great response time to complaints.Two outside gas grilles on a massive wrap around deck. Whole house sound system. Spectacular water pressure!!! Very, very clean, throughout. Here's the not-as-Good: Lightswitches everywhere. Burned out bulbs everywhere - yes, it was end-of peak season, but it was crazy. While we were out they came and immediately replaced bulbs - filling a garbage can with bulb packaging. Main fireplace was gas, but broken with 'part on order'. They returned $50 for the inconvenience. Hubby went around and picked up garbage, too much to ignore. In fairness, they cannot clear a season's worth of littering from an entire mountain the second the snow is gone. So they are ahead by one. Main microwave did not work. And finally, also relatively minor: The single refrigerator was too small to accomodate 4-days of eat-in-and-relax for four people. As you see, minor blips. We would go back in a minute! Love Canaan in the Spring, Summer & Fall! Not a skiier, cannot comment on Winter...

My wife and I had a very disappointing experience renting from this company over Thanksgiving…read moreweekend this year. From a customer service perspective they are very nice people who present themselves as genuinely interested in providing good service but they are poorly organized and don't seem to know what's going on with the properties they manage. We rented a first property, paid, signed contract and thought we were set up. Then an hour later the lady who worked with me called back to say the, per the maintenance man who had happened to stop by the rental office soon after we booked, the property for whatever reason was not in rentable condition. Yet it was posted on their website as such and when I checked back the next day it was still posted as available to rent. I wonder what would've happened if the maintenance man hadn't stopped in?? To make up for their error they offered 2 other properties with a 25% discount which still made them hundreds of dollars more expensive than the property we had picked. We agreed to rent one of them because it looked like a nice place and it showed the amenities we required, chief among which was Internet access which they listed as "high speed Internet". When we arrived the house was a nice place and overall it was clean but the Internet was not functioning, there were no house instructions available except for unintelligible instructions for lighting the gas grill since the printing on the igniter had worn off. We started off our 4 day visit with having to wait for hours between waiting for the maintenance man to stop by to show us how to light the fire and for the Internet provider to "refresh" the internet signal to the house. The Internet came on after the refresh but then was back out the next morning which led to more hours waiting around for calls from the provider which never came. Finally the next day the internet provider called the house with apologies. He said that in the best of times the internet connectivity in our area, being quite rural, was not good and that especially given the large numbers of tourists in the area for the holiday weekend it was all the worse. Given that admission from the internet provider my feeling is the realtor misrepresented the property by listing "high speed internet" as an amenity. As I said the realty company employees were nice and responsive for the most part but they obviously didn't know what was going on with this property, I could list a few other issues that could easily be tended to if someone were paying attention. They list clearly in their contract, bold and underlined that no refunds will be given for problems with a property which they have no knowledge of. Given that stipulation and our experience my feeling is they have motivation to promise much, deliver short and claim ignorance of any shortcomings with a property. We have had much better experiences overall dealing with Mountaintop realty in Canaan Valley and will not rent from Timberline again after this.
