I looked at 12 places here in Jacksonville & 5 in Volusia County. Brookdale Southside was the runaway choice from the beginning. It has a beautiful quiet campus, is located in a great area, has a culture of welcome & friendliness. What more is there? The staff is great. The food is acceptable & plenteous. The apartments & villas are lovely: all the apartments have screened-in porches/ balconies which pleases my 2 cats. The services offered make senior life possible & pretty easy. A year later, this is my home! I've made good friends, settled in & can hardly wait for the next adventure in getting old, older, oldest!

They have daily activities like trivia games and music for the residents that stimulate both the mind and the body. They do not freak out if relatives drop in unannounced, because they have nothing to hide. It isn't cheap, but for what you get here, you just can't do better.

There is now an Activities Director who is enthusiastic and introducing a schedule of activities for the facility, including memory care. The staffing is also improved, with more full-time aides and somewhat better coverage on weekends, though that remains a weak spot. Nursing has also improved with the addition of an Assistant Director who helps organize and manage the load, and who complements the leadership team. The memory care unit really needs updating with a special emphasis on safety. Falls are frequent among memory care residents, and this unit was designed with little regard for safe landings. The management has always been available and attentive to my concerns and requests, and I've found the staff to be mostly friendly and respectful.

My sweet Mom lived at Brookdale Yorktown in Port Orange Fla. for 3 years and I had one PROBLEM…read moreAFTER ANOTHER. Problems like:Brookdale not re-ordering her medications in a timely manner, they were constantly running out of her pain and sleeping medications. Re-ordering her medications was their job, it was in the contract we signed with Brookdale, and they were getting paid big dollars to do so. I had face to face arguments and phone call after phone call with the head nurse and I got every kind of excuse you can imagine. Brookdale was written up by the State of Florida for this. When they did run out of her sleeping pills, I caught a med-tech using another medication as a sleeping pill, Brookdale was written up on this as a violation of state laws as well. Not cleaning her bathroom weekly, which was also in the contract we signed with them and again they were getting paid big dollars for this service. When visiting I had to constantly do checks and follow ups to make sure housekeeping was doing their job. The A/C unit breaking down two of the three summers my Mother lived there. Recieving no help from the Executive Director and having to go to Brookdales corporate office and then having to go to the State of Florida for help in getting the out dated A/C unit fixed. All of the Executive Directors, (3 in 3 years) were totally incompetent of managing this complex. When looking for an assisted living for someone you care for, interview not only the residents but the staff.
