Hubby and I came here for a day of white water rafting on the lower New River. It was amazing. It was our first time rafting and the crew was amazing from beginning to end. TJ was our guide and we couldn't have asked for a better one. He was funny, helpful and guided you on everything you needed to do to stay on the raft and not go "swimming". The other members of the crew were very friendly too. TJ and others were very knowledgeable of the area, and after the rafting trip was over, I felt like I learned a lot about the people that used to live on the river during the major coal mining days and the history of the area in general. This trip was a blast and if we ever come back to do it again, it will be with River Expeditions...and hopefully TJ will be our guide again! read more

Rick and Heather run an amazing business. They are very professional and accommodating especially for large groups. They set out expectations and as long as you follow those, I promise you will be happy. I have been coming here for 10 years now and have never been unhappy with the service. Went rafting and camping here. Great place to start camping if you never have before, and the rafting was excellent. The campgrounds have on-site showers and bathrooms. The food at the restaurant could have been better, but my group only ate there for breakfast. Def bring food for grilling over the campfire. The guides are really knowledgable and good at what they do. Our guide was Ben--it was his first guided tour, and he did great! The rapids were fun and there was a good mix, so there were some challenges on the river as well as areas you can jump out and swim. read more

Traveled from Charlotte NC on 5/21/2016 and it was an amazing experience rating on a 15mile river. Raft God was great and entertainee us explaining the waters and behavior for 4 hours. We did not feel bored nor questioned the decision to choose river expedition company for rafting. Lunch was good and entire place was neat and well maintained. Twelve Boy Scouts and their leaders did a two day trip on the New River. Day 1 was on the upper New and was done in duckies. Day 2 was the lower New in rafts. We had a wonderful experience. This was our second trip with River Expeditions. For our first trip, we camped on site. For the second trip, we had a larger group and stayed at a hotel. We spent Memorial Weekend camping with River Expeditions! Due to COVID-19, the campsite was completely empty. We were the only tent campers. It was such a great time! The shower house was clean. The campgrounds had great signage to direct our friends to our site. There is lots to do; volleyball, horseshoes, paintball, ziplining. We got the Memorial Day package, which included 1 day of rafting, breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the rafting day, plus 3 nights of camping. Because of the government mandated policies regarding food, breakfast was lacking. It was in no way their fault, but they had to use packaged donuts to replace what would normally be a full breakfast. Lunch on the River was 2 lunch meat sandwiches, chips, an apple, and cookies. Dinner was delicious pulled pork, slaw, corn on the cob, and a fudge brownie. We also got 2 PBRs each! Because the water was high and our rafting experience wasn't what we expected, we were given 20% off our next trip. We're looking forward to it! Our guide, Tyler, was awesome! Our whole family came with a party of 10. We were originally going to tent camp but the heat was triple digit heat index and were hoping for something different. The office did everything they could to move us to a small cabin that had AC. We managed to fit 8 in the cabin. We had a great time hanging on our porch in the evening and enjoying everything the campsite had to offer. The rafting experience was incredible and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Our guide was Lucas Gallagher and he was entertaining, jovial and extremely knowledgeable at whitewater rafting ensuring our time was amazing...a true expert! The rafting had a couple challenging spots and we sailed right through them and had an absolute blast! read more

The staff and amenities are great, however the owner Rick is not a very bright businessman. Our large group (this year over 300 people) have been booking a 3-5 day slot for over 20 years. This year on the final night, he snuck into the area of the concert and literally pulled the plug, without discussing his problem with anyone let alone the trip coordinator. Turning the power off on powered stage could have ruined over $50k in equipment. He didn't care, he was upset the music was bothering the guests? Hey buddy we were the guests. If the cops show up they ask and look for someone in charge. You actually knew who's in charge of our event. You've known him for over20 years. Guess what...we won't be back. Oddly enough the management/owner is actually replying to some of the negative reviews and instead of ascertaining the problem, they're giving cursory thank you have a nice day answers. Thank you for proving our point. You're not very bright business owners and unprofessional. read more

This is the second year we've rafted and used River Expeditions. We are completely sold on this business! The guides are always great at getting everyone down the river safely and with complete excitement! This year we also stayed on the premises in a Bungalow Cabin. It was so peaceful and lovely on site plus convenient. The room was clean, comfortable, but it did lack utensils. This does need to be stated someone up front. They did give us cups and plastic cutlery though. Some of our party zip lined and said it was awesome. We are planning a larger group to go back again next year. read more

I've been there plenty of times in the past and this is a great place! I prefer the mom and pop places over the corporate big company places. There pool and hot tub were great, bar was gear and so was the staff. The only recommendation I would have is to add more shower and bathroom houses. Overall it was a great experience! Took a group down in June 2020 for the weekend and had a great time. We stayed in a rustic cabin. Just a basic bunkhouse, but clean and good for the price. The Lower New was great so we did it twice. We are heading back down in July for another couple runs. Our guide was super and very informative. I didn't mind giving him a tip. I highly recommend River Expeditions! Devon was our guide and we had so much fun. Besides learning about rafting we learned about the history of the river and the towns. Lunch on the river was fantastic. They even accommodated vegetarians and those with gluten allergies without any requests! We stayed in Luxury cabin which was extremely nice with 5 bedrooms, two baths, beautiful porches on front and back and private hot tub! Loved the rockers on the front porch. I would highly suggest bringing your own chairs, firewood and utensils to cook smores at the fire pit off back porch. Also, bring your own towels. The ones provided were tiny and rough. Finally, we should have made sure the gas grill was working before we started dinner. We ended up having to bake everything since we forgot to check. read more

Be careful with your camping spot. Apparently it is okay to go to another site which is obviously occupied (tents and equipment in place) and take the table and put it on their site because everything is fair game if it's empty. Management won't do anything about it because "technically the picnic tables aren't assigned to each campsite. read more

First impressions are everything and this place exceeds your expectations! We were shocked to arrive at what seemed to be a brand new base camp! This place is immaculate - the campgrounds are clean, quiet and family-friendly - the shower house was spotless - let's just say, you feel like you are the first visitors!!! Our check-in was quick, the staff were super friendly and helpful. In less than 10 minutes of arrival, we were picking out where we wanted to set up our tent. The rafting trips were well-organized and the guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. The gear was clean and DRY! You don't think this is a big deal until you've had to wear a cold, wet life jacket on a bus for 20 minutes at 8am! If you are going for a family trip, I would recommend the Upper or Lower New River. If you are looking for high adventure, go in early spring or fall for the Gauley. And if you are lucky enough, you'll end up with Eric or Jake for your guides. Here's suggestion - pay extra for your own boat (6 ppl as opposed to 8) and request them! The market has about 7 outfitters and I've gone with 2 of them. Overall, River Expeditions was by far the better bet! read more

Went to raft the Upper and Lower Gauley with a group of friends. The river was some of the best whitewater I've ever seen. Smitty and Andrew were both amazing guides. Getting to watch our DVD's from each days trip at the Red Dog Saloon at the end of each day was cool. The food they served us both days on the river was excellent. read more

My friend and I had this genius idea to purchase a LivingSocial deal to go WWRafting at River Expeditions. We thought, how long of a drive could WV be from MD? It wasn't long after that we realized it was a 6 hour drive from Baltimore. Oh well.. let's pack up the car and get on the road then. We arrived around 7PM and the LS were readily on hand to greet us and give us our weekend itinerary. This is quite comforting actually after a long drive, because I really didn't want to be thinking at that point. Breakdown Itinerary For The Weekend: Friday (upon arrival) - Setup camp and then Free Wings and Food in the on-site bar/saloon. Which i might add were damn delicious. It was really nice to have an on-site bar because there was also entertainment, i.e. drunken karaoke.. you really dint wanna miss out on that one! Saturday - 8-10am there are time slots you can choose from to attend your rafting trip. My group chose 10am, because we actually like to sleep.. go figure? The bus ride down the rafts on the lower New River, was quite bumpy. So.. just make sure you have some food in your stomach in case you need to let it out, when you get to the bottom. Our guide, Matt was fan-freaking-tastic! He was encouraging, soothing, comical and just downright chivalrous. But I can say that the men of WV are all pretty much that way... I can dig it :) Our group started up the river around 1030ish, stop off midway for a lunch that the guides prepared for us (salad, PB&J, potato salad, brownies, cookies, veggie tray, wraps/sandwiches -- plenty of enough food to fill ya up). Finished our 13 mile trip down the river and headed back to the heated buses to get warm. At this point, when you get back to camp.. its best to go get yourself a shower. We figured it would difficult but we actually found that there were plenty of enough showers available onsite, that we didn't have to wait. Afterwards, we headed to the saloon to watch the video footage from the day and grab some grub which was also provided for FREE. I mean.. you really cant complain when food is free. After that we had a major 80's/90's dance-karaoke party at the saloon until the wee hours of the morning. I got to dance with a real-life Cowboy, do the cotton eyed joe and even met a fellow Chiver. I can honestly say it's been a while since I've met someone who is so down to earth, that I really vibe with. We've even kept in touch. Which just goes to show that you never know who you'll meet through these spontaneous shenanigans. Sunday: They offer other alternatives (more WWRafting, paintball, horseback riding, etc..) if you are interested for a discounted price. However, my group decided to simply pack up and head back home to Baltimore. I had the time of my life at River Expeditions! It is a trip that I will never forget. I got to experience WWRafting, I had a nice getaway from the "real world" and I met new people whom I hope to continue my friendships with in the future. So yeah.. although it may have been a long drive back home, that 6 hour drive was worth every minute and I will most definitely be back again in the Fall. read more

Unlike most reviews here, I will start with the negative and the reason why I give 3 stars and not 5. Though there is plenty of camp space and it is not reserved, get there early because most sites are on a hill and when it rains (which it did 2 out of the 3 times I have gone), it can be an issue with tents. You want to get a high ground camping site. The bigger disappointing point was the photo and video package. For $80, I expected at least up to date video quality and photos of at least two different locations on the river. First the video- Our video was shot and produced by a guy named Moose. He is a nice guy, in fact he saved someone's life on my trip...another story..but he sucks as a videographer. When ever there was a raft stuck, he focused on that and neglected to capture video of all the other rafts going by. He also TALKED through the whole thing, put childish finger puppets in the frame and did a whole bit with himself at the end as if he made the video for his family and not the clients. Did I mention the quality of the video. I first did this trip in 2006...I am pretty sure the company still uses the same camera. It is dark and the image quality is worse than the iPhone 3G (Not exaggerating). As for the pics. Great quality but it was just a series of rapid fire shots from one part of the river. Not worth $40. Here is the good. I would give 3 and a half if I could. It is a great value (if you don't get the video and photo package). I am pretty sure we paid around $160-175 per person which included camping, rafting with a well-qualified guide, 2 light breakfasts, lunch and dinner. Our guide was awesome (They all are) and the 2 free beers after the trip was a great touch. The Upper Gauley was amazing and I strongly recommend (You don't have to have experience on class 5's, just don't be an idiot and listen to your guide). ALSO NOTE...I wish I knew this ahead of time. They have helmets with mounts for your Go Pro! So bring it! Everyone is super friendly and knowledgable of the river. The bar is fun and a great way to meet fun loving people. September was a great time to go for the dam release. Though they warned us the water would be cold (Water from the bottom of the lake), it was warm weather and I didn't wear a wet suit. (You can bring one or rent one. Sure it was cold when I was splashed or jumped in, but once I was in the warm weather, I felt fine. The guide says that visibility is shit in October because the water is warmer (Water from top of the lake) and the weather is cooler which causes a lot of fog. Definitely go, it is the best rafting I have ever done. Don't get the video package. read more

Overall great experience. Our group signed up for the Lower New Express Rafting half-day tour via Groupon which was perfect for us as first-time rafters. We had an amazing tour guide, Tyler, who was hilarious and very laid back. Throughout the entire tour from the bus ride to the river to the minute we stepped in the raft, the guides gave us clear guidance on what we needed to do, what to expect while all at the same time keeping us encouraged and excited for the rapids. One Word Review: AWESOME! We travelled down to West Virginia the weekend of August 22nd to go white water rafting with River Expeditions and truly had an amazing time!! We went with a group of 6 and had our own raft (but was a part of a larger group, which included 6 rafts total). It was nice because we stayed in the larger group, but didn't feel held back by them as well. Our guide's name was Bob and he was awesome! He was incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable as well (who knew they had names for all the rapids and rocks?). I have to say, I don't think our experience would have been nearly as awesome if it wasn't for Bob! What I liked most about this trip was that it didn't have the "Corporate America" feel to it, but that everyone truly made us feel welcome. The trip included jumping off of some pretty high rocks (Corporate America would say it's a lawsuit waiting to happen, "surfing" (where another raft flipped), and going through some rapids outside of the raft. Also, our lunch blew my expectations out of the water (Homemade brownies! Cold Cuts! Cookies! Even PB&J if anyone was a vegetarian)! After our trip, we were invited back to the onsite Saloon so we could watch a video of ourselves and armed with a handful of drink tokens (who doesn't like free beer?). Everyone was so friendly and it felt like everyone there really cared about us having a great time (which we did). After we stayed at the Saloon, we even went out with two raft guides (Bob and Brendan) to Pies and Pints, which was amazing! It was so nice getting to know them and again, it's that feeling that they actually wanted to hear feedback, listen to our experience, share their experiences, and again...care about whether or not we had a good time (and not just someone there trying to squeeze out extra tips). I have to say...at first, I thought the price was a little too much...but after I saw everything that it included, as well as our amazing time, I'd do it again in a heartbeat! I wish we would have been able to stay longer so I could have gone zip lining...but we plan on going back very soon, so this time, we'll take some more time off of work and really have a go at it! I highly, highly recommend this trip! Of you go, ask for Bob, because it would really suck if your guide wasn't fun and entertaining! read more

River Expeditions was far better than I expected. The outpost is AMAZING. The campground is gorgeous- your options are endless. They have standard camping, luxury cabins, and everything in between. Having the Saloon on the campground is more than ideal. One night we stuck around our campsite and had a bonfire, the next night we went out to the bar to see live music....best of both worlds. Our guide (Ryan) during the rafting trip was perfection- he had been on over 1,000 trips down that part of the river and was extremely knowledgeable and, more importantly, very entertaining. The trip was a birthday gift so I hadn't done a lot of research on what was included in our trip. I was surprised to discover that all of the meals were covered. Breakfast on Sat morning, lunch during your rafting trip, dinner Sat night, and breakfast Sun morning= all included. We didn't have to pack any food, which was great. I would go again in a heartbeat. I'm hooked on rafting. And I'm already trying to schedule a weekend to do the Gauley this Fall! A++ read more

I've been rafting the New River with this company annually since 2008, and I really couldn't be happier. The guides are lovely, the rates fair for what you get in terms of rafting, the water amazing, the picnic lunches tasty, the supplies plentiful. And I could go on. If I had one complaint, it would be that items in the gift shop and the photos/DVDs of the trips are overpriced. Nothing that keeps me from coming back, though! read more

If I went back, I would take with me what I have learned. Pros: -Our guide Colin was awesome. If I went back, I would want to hire him for a private group tour. He clearly knows the river like the back of his hand and was incredibly funny, which made a slow trip (see below) a lot better. -The equipment was in fairly good condition and the facilities (lodge, etc) are very nice. -Lunch and dinner on Saturday were sizable. I mean, this isn't gourmet, but there was plenty of food. We made our own Pro: We stayed at the Comfort Inn across the highway instead of in the campgrounds. It was easy to get back and forth from the Comfort Inn and the tour site, plus they have an excellent breakfast (way better than the Continental breakfast at the campsite) and hot showers/soft bed. Cons: -We spent most of our day sitting, waiting for other boats. Apparently they want to video tape this whole thing to sell the DVDs at the end, and they were short on videographers, so they merged two rafting groups and we were always waiting for one of the groups. That was INCREDIBLY boring. I wish we could have opted for the "we don't care about the video" category and just gone down the river. -The rapids are kind of boring. I blame this slightly on the company, for all the talk on how "extreme" this was going to be...yawn. I think this was because of all the waiting. We could have gotten down the whole river in an hour or two, but it stretched out to five as we sat there in almost still water. If we had flown through it would have been a bit more "extreme." -The bar, the Red River Saloon, has horrible service. I don't know what the staff are doing back there, but apparently they need four staff to work the computer, and getting a drink was painful. Both Friday and Saturday night we gave up after one drink and went to a bar/restaurant in town. read more

River expedition was a great place to go for rafting. I have gone twice now and the staff has always been great. I rafted the Upper new River which is open in the later months of summer. During the Fall is when you want to take on the Upper Gauley if your looking for a extreme challenge. Check out living social or groupon before you go. they sometimes have deals on there. They provided breakfast and lunch on our rafting trips. One of the other days we were there we went paint balling. Field was really small (more like speed ball) but it was fun for a couple hours. We rented the Luxury cabins during our stay. Plenty of space for the large Group. It had all the supplies we needed to cook and grill. Only bad part while we were there was the power went out when it stormed really hard but eventually came back on. Lots of places to eat close by if you dont want to cook. Grocery store is about a mile away from base from the rafting area which was good for our group since we had to stock up on more food. they also have some local restaurants you must try. I highly reccomend this rafting company. very professional and keeps things fun. read more

Cabin, rafting, zip lining, couples massage oh my! We stayed in a luxury cabin that had a private hot tub. Rafted the lower Gauley on Saturday, fella and kids zip lined on Sunday morning and we enjoyed a massage Sunday evening. The whole weekend we didn't have to leave the property if we didn't want to. There was food, drinks, snacks and everything available right there. It was so great! read more

Thirteen of my friends and I did the express rafting trip (2 hours) this past weekend, and it was an amazing experience. We were all first-timers, but the professional staff and experienced guides made sure we had a great and safe time on the New River. We didn't stay on the camp grounds, but it looked great and there was a lot to do besides rafting. They really give you a full experience. If you get to request a guide, you have to ask for Tyler. He's been rafting for nearly 18 years and makes you feel at ease during the trip. He knows his stuff, but he's not uptight or anything. If I'm ever back in WV, I'd use them again. read more

We just did the upper gauley with mark... And it was awesome! Mark was super knowledgeable, technically excellent and very pleasant... with lots of random factoids and stories about the area. Everything you could hope for in a river raft guide. We had a lot of fun without ever feeling as though our lives were in danger. All of the guides that led the gauley trips were skilled and well experienced. Afterwords we watched a video at their local pub of all of the raft groups and got to bond with the guides. What an Adrenalin Rush you are in for with River Expeditions. We had purchased a groupon for a half day White Water trip and Zip lining. We had been told that if there was not enough guest to fill the half day trip was it a problem to move us to a full day.. NO PROBLEM AT ALL.. We had a full day on the water with a fantastic Guide. Her name was Carla who wove us thru the many Class 5 rapids with the skill of an Olympic Down Hill Skier. Her History and Stories of the area only made the experience more enjoyable and memorable. Her instructions on what we were going to experience on each set of Rapids made the runs feel safer as much as they could be. If you are fortunate to get Carla tell her you want to do some West Virginia Surfing its a blast. We are already planning a group visit with all our friends next summer. read more
