My 5K tour with RCR was easily one of the highlights of my trip back to Texas! The route includes stops at the Alamo, various historical government buildings, San Fernando Cathedral, and the Tower of the Americas, as well as stretches along the Riverwalk itself. As a SA native, most of the stops along the way were familiar to me, but guides Kris and Tina were great at providing relevant, interesting, and unique info while also keeping each stop fairly short. In addition to being informative, they were also enthusiastic and friendly. Run itself is paced by attendees, with one guide leading and another bringing up the rear. Don't be turned off by the 5K distance if you're not a seasoned runner, as the longest stretch is only about a half mile with the distance broken up by frequent stops for information and photos. They also offer a 10K option for those who really want an in-depth tour of the downtown area! read more

We had such an amazing time on this tour! Our tour guides were Kris and Tina and they were fantastic. They explained that there would be 15 stops along the way. We got a lot of good photo ops and we got to learn little bits and pieces from San Antonio history. I definitely thought it was a great pace and a super cool way to get to know the city. This was probably one of my favorite activities I did when I was in San Antonio. They have water on hand but ran short near the end. I had 2 little water bottles though. Every year for my birthday I like to visit a city that I have never been to before. This year I chose San Antonio, TX! While searching for activities to do in San Antonio, I stumbled upon the River City Run. How perfect! We were planning on flying into San Antonio late on Friday evening and this would be our first activity Saturday morning. What a great way to get a run in on vacation and figure out where everything is located! My boyfriend and I met Venessa at The Alamo at 8:30am on 1/17/15. We were the only two on the tour but that did not bother us at all! We liked the individual attention. I feel like this tour is great for small groups as well as larger groups. We made 15 stops along our run. Venessa was very patient and let us take photos at every stop. It was a nice running pace, not too fast or too slow, and Venessa was great and informative along the way. She brought along a backpack of water bottles and we received t-shirts at the end of the run. I highly recommend this experience! It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip! Let's be honest, I hate to run! Don't get me wrong, I exercise 3-4 times a week. I love the elliptical but to run all around a city, was not on my bucket list. Your greeted by two very outgoing tour guides. They had me running all around downtown San Antonio. I saw every nick n cranny that meant anything to the city and its residents. I can't tell you we ran .08 or .02 miles in between each historical site. I can tell you I jogged between 5 and 10 mins between each site. Keep in mind that your downtown and with all the stop lights, there will be times you jog slower or power walk. You also have about a 3-5 min rest between each stop; while the knowledgeable tour guide explains the history of each place. I woke up this morning with my body yelling at me. Being someone who works out, I found that I wasn't as fit as I thought and will jogging a lot more. (Thank You River Run) While your jogging, you will have the opportunity to take pics at each historial site and you will always have a group photo taken by your affable tour guides. They kindly allow you to have the ability to see your pics on Instagram, Facebook or Yelp. It's also awesome that they have a River City Run in most major cities in the US. They will be added to my agenda the next timeI travel and also in my hometown. I'm sure there are may historical things I don't know about my own city. read more

I used to frequent Sn Antonio about 15 years ago, and recently have started spending more time here again, but have not been downtown much as of late. Given a rare weekend here, and a warm but overcast, kid-free Saturday morning, I was looking for a fun way to see the sights again and maybe explore the local history and culture a bit. I'm a huge fan of exploring new places by running - you see, hear, and smell MUCH more on foot than on a bus, and running is faster than walking and this allows you to cover more turf faster. Thanks to a quick Google search, I found the River Run, and promptly signed up. The run starts at the Alamo. Be warned that the meters DO apply on Saturdays, and the lots are stupid overpriced for a few hours on a weekend morning, so take quarters with you! After I got past my embarrassing attempt to park and show up on time at 8:45am, I spent a delightful hour and change following Tommy around San Antonio's colorful downtown. We bopped on and off the river walk, past historic hotels, bars, and artist areas, interrupted at well-spaced intervals by commentary from Tina and the guys. Kelly followed at the back of the group to make sure nobody got left behind, and took pictures. Tommy was running around a 7:30-8 min pace today, as we had a few rabbits at the front, but the 12-minute milers were fine too, with Kelly sweeping and the route planned well such that nobody had to wait too long for the rest of the group to catch up. The running portions are no more than half a mile at a time, probably less. At the end, you are rewarded with a bottle of water and a tee shirt that will end up in the "wear regularly" pile. I learned more about San Antonio in one run than I did in a year plus of visiting back in the '90's. The team has done a great job of designing a terrific tour, and I highly recommend that you give it a go, even if you're local (lots of locals were running with us too!) It's well worth the entry fee, and now I know where I want to go back and visit later. read more

My husband and I went on this tour this morning and had a blast! The guides were real personable and understanding of my slow pace. They never left us. They brought us water which was nice on this hot and humid morning. They really seemed to know a lot about all the places we stopped at. Heard some funny stories about president Clinton, ghost stories about some of the hotels, and a lot of fun history facts and stories. We stopped a ton of times. We went to places that you never hear about on the tour sites but were beautiful and worth the stop, like the art school and hemisphere park. I look forward to doing this tour every time I visit San Antonio and will definitely tell everyone I know to do it when they come down. read more

Such a great way to experience San Antonio! There were ~15 stops, the longest stretch being about 0.4 miles - perfect for a Sunday "stroll". I just expected more people to be on the tour...it would have been more exciting running with a bigger group. There were only two of us. On the plus side, it felt like a more personalized tour of San Antonio. I was hoping for more exciting photos and photo opportunities during the run and during stops, but it didn't seem like there was much effort put forth towards that aspect of the tour. Maybe it was just awkward only having two customers...just my speculation. Nonetheless, the run route itself and the historical background at each of the stops exceeded my expectations. Great way to tour the city and stay active! Tommy and Tina were our running tour guides on this 5K, easy run. First, understand that there are a lot of stops on this run, because it is a tour of San Antonio. So, the longest consecutive distance we may have run was about 0.4 miles, and you can generally go at your own running/jogging pace. Both Tommy and Tina are both well versed in the history of the landmarks, and also add in little bits about the city - since they live and work in San Antonio. You can tell they have a lot of pride in their city - it really shows throughout the tour. Having them bring cold water bottles made this run even easier - you don't have to think about bringing water along the run. If you like staying active and also want to learn a little about San Antonio - this comes highly recommended! read more

My husband and I traveled with another couple to San Antonio. We were very excited to do this history run. Unfortunately, the website is very misleading in the experience level needed for the race. It is definitely not "jogging". My husband runs marathons and he kept track on his watch - the tour guide was running 8 minute miles. This was not a problem for him, but it was for me. I eventually had to leave the group because I could only jog. Eventually they were so far ahead of us that the guide wouldn't wait anymore. I wanted my husband to enjoy it so I encouraged him to go ahead. Another member in our group made it to the end, but said she really struggled due to the pace. He usually runs 9 min miles so this tour was way too fast. And she even runs races! The guide started off so extremely fast that it was not enjoyable for several people. She was often out of breath when trying to explain one of the sites. She would tell history while we were waiting at at busy intersections waiting for the light to change. We could not figure out what the extreme rush was for. The stops were NOT 3-4 min. There was a lot of jaywalking and rushing with the information being told. We also thought it was in poor taste she mentioned she was an attorney multiple times.... And if we got caught jay walking, she could get us out of the ticket. The idea and concept of this history race is really unique and awesome. I just wish they offered it in 2 different levels. There needs to be a level for those who cannot run 7-8 minute miles. Maybe 9-10 minute miles? Which is what I would consider jogging? Perhaps make an an actual race (or whatever the guide was trying to do) for those wanting to run that fast. read more

This tour was awesome! I am on the slower side and was able to keep up with no problem. The hardest part for me was the heat and the stopping and starting. If you are not a runner this could be a bit difficult though the two guides are very good about having one in the front and one in the back keeping track of runners and providing water. We had several young kids between 7-11 on our tour and quite frankly they did better than the adults. We also had a woman with a Chihuahua in her bag who was able to complete the tour. The two guides were very friendly and knowledgeable about the area and took us to many important places in San Antonio providing us with a wealth of history and information about San Antonio. The best part is the run is in the morning so you have the rest of the day to check out San Antonio! If you are interested in visiting the Alamo make sure to visit another time because it will be closed while you are doing the running tour and you won't be able to go inside before the tour. You will likely be too hot and tired to go inside after the tour unless of course you are a very serious runner. The River City Run Tour inspired me and I will be searching running tours for future travels. What a great way to stay fit while on vacation and a good excuse to overindulge. read more

The tour guides of our group were wonderful! The Texas Court Reporters Association hired this company to do this tour as part of the fun run/walk to honor the memory of my sister for the TCRA Convention. For it to be such an emotional morning honoring my sister, they really went above and beyond and were very patient with us as my family was slower than the rest of the group. I had a great time doing this tour guided run!!! You don't have to be a runner to participate. There are many stops and its paced well. I was able to see a lot of things in San Antonio that I would have otherwise overlooked so it's a good way to start your trip here so you can see where you want to explore more during your trip. When in San Antonio I HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking out RIVER CITY RUN. Here is why: The River City Run/Tour did not disappoint; in fact, it superseded any expectation I had. It is an interesting concept that incorporates three of my favorite things: running, urban tourism, and history. I initially contacted River City Run via text to inquire about a private tour. Tina responded quickly and later called me to make sure my questions had been adequately answered. Subsequently, I registered for a Saturday run/tour and accidentally selected two runs/tours. I emailed Tina explaining my mistake and I quickly received confirmation from her about being refunded. The run/tour was led by Tommy and Kelly who were friendly, personable, and thoughtful. For example, they talked to every single person throughout the run making personal connections (no easy task!). The run/tour never felt rushed and they made sure to keep a pace so that everyone was able to keep up and often checked-in to make sure runners were adequately hydrated. Tommy and Kelly were knowledgeable of Texas and San Antonio history/landmarks. What I appreciated most was that they incorporated a contemporary interpretation of the historical accounts that held my attention. Finally, there is no need to take pictures because Tommy and Kelly take turns snapping pictures throughout the run/tour. There were two group pictures, one at the Alamo and another at an amphitheater on the Riverwalk. These pictures were made available for free via social media at the conclusion of the tour. I went on the run this morning and really loved it! I'm in San Antonio for the summer and spend most of my time working, but this was a great chance to really learn about the city. The guides had lots of great stories and fun facts about San Antonio and I learned a lot. They had great suggestions for places to go and things to do. Getting to see downtown early in the morning when it was pretty empty was nice too. I would definitely recommend this run to anyone who visits San Antonio. I will be back to do it again too! As far as the running, I was worried it would be really slow because of all the stopping but it was still a great work out. Then they will tell you about the world's fair and tower stuff. Then they will run you some more. They tell some good stories too.
