With our tour guide, Venessa!
Mollyann R.

Every year for my birthday I like to visit a city that I have never been to before. This year I chose San Antonio, TX! While searching for activities to do in San Antonio, I stumbled upon the River City Run. How perfect! We were planning on flying into San Antonio late on Friday evening and this would be our first activity Saturday morning. What a great way to get a run in on vacation and figure out where everything is located! My boyfriend and I met Venessa at The Alamo at 8:30am on 1/17/15. We were the only two on the tour but that did not bother us at all! We liked the individual attention. I feel like this tour is great for small groups as well as larger groups. We made 15 stops along our run. Venessa was very patient and let us take photos at every stop. It was a nice running pace, not too fast or too slow, and Venessa was great and informative along the way. She brought along a backpack of water bottles and we received t-shirts at the end of the run. I highly recommend this experience! It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip! Every city should have something like this :)

My husband and I went on this tour this morning and had a blast! The guides were real personable and understanding of my slow pace. They never left us. They brought us water which was nice on this hot and humid morning. They really seemed to know a lot about all the places we stopped at. Heard some funny stories about president Clinton, ghost stories about some of the hotels, and a lot of fun history facts and stories. We stopped a ton of times. We went to places that you never hear about on the tour sites but were beautiful and worth the stop, like the art school and hemisphere park. I look forward to doing this tour every time I visit San Antonio and will definitely tell everyone I know to do it when they come down.

Definitely something to do in San Antonio! great way to explore the city...found interesting places that we want to go back to and check out! beautiful views and fun places to stop! tour guides were knowledgable and fun to talk too!

During the tour we were able to take photos. This is my favorite pic of my brother and i on the Riverwalk.

We had an absolute wonderful time during our run. It was great way to start the day. Our guides Tina and Kelly were fantastic. They were knowledgeable about the area and very accommodating. I loved how it was inclusive for runners of all types. I would HIGHLY recommend this to everyone!

Before the start of what seemed like a run through the history books.

Five stars, easy. Shoot, if I could give five hundred stars, I would. The tour guides truly love San Antonio, and it showed throughout the tour. We learned so much about SA that we'd never learned on previous trips or history books...it was like we ran through the history books! What a great way to wrap up our getaway to San Antonio...we'll be back!!

Great way to both get a workout in and see the sights of San Antonio. Very friendly guides who put a fun healthy twist to seeing the city. I'd highly recommend to anyone visiting.

She was unbelievably knowledgeable, engaging, and truly made the entire tour special for our whole family. Sophia was especially wonderful with our kids and made them feel included and excited throughout the tour. At one point our youngest got scared, and Sophia immediately stepped in with so much kindness and patience that she had her smiling and feeling safe again within minutes. As parents, that meant so much to us. You can tell Sophia genuinely cares about what she does and about the people on her tours. She made the caverns come alive with fascinating information while also making the experience fun, relaxed, and memorable for everyone. Wear shorts and be ready to walk up and down, so wear those tennis shoes with decent grips. Gets a bit wet at times. 2. Don't follow Google maps that may lead you to their service road. Keep driving up the road and look out for their obvious signs towards their parking lot.

I thought it would be neat to plan this for my husbands bday but to my surprise I really enjoyed it too! We did a shorter tour which we regret and wish we had done the long one because time flew bye! Emzy was very knowledgeable about the history of each stop and gave the backgrounds, interesting facts, and insight to every place we went. Not only did he know every detail but just walking to each stop he would include some history of certain areas in the journey that were very neat... there's no way I can truly explain how awesome this experience was! Don't waste your time with paying $20 for a 10 minute audio tour other places because it's a waste of time and like a broken record. This is hands down epic!

We could have spent the whole time in the first bar alone. Each bar was awesome, and he got us discounts at each spot as well. Emzy knows esoteric and interesting historical facts, but you can talk to him about just about anything and he has something interesting to add to the conversation.

The process for booking the tour was simple as it can be done online or in person. Patrons purchase tickets and are given a schedule of when the bus departs from the meeting point and of the sights the bus stops at. When entering the bus, patrons are permitted to sit wherever they choose on the double-decker bus. The Things elected to sit on the top deck in the baking hot sun (not recommended on a TX summer day). The tour is what you make it. You can craft your own route as the bus routes are designed to take you near the main landmarks in the city. By taking the hop on, hop off option, you can change routes and discover the city at leisure. The bus stops are multiple locations along the route, and the bus driver provides fun facts about the places along the bus route. While I didn't learn anything new about my city, The Things did. This is a great option for those looking to do something different in their own city or for those who are visiting S.A. for the first time.

We did have problems understanding due to bad acoustics on one of the buses. Another bus broke down. (It was replaced in 15mins). Because we hoped off and got back on, we had multiple drivers. One was really good... wish I knew her name (sorry). But she was informative and played music on her iPod when she wasn't talking. (Nice) One driver however, literally talked to the two women in the front seats about the Pink Concert that was happening in the evening. I was thinking.... Tell me about the damn history!! I just did a tour in Austin that was a lot cheaper and was way more fun and informative. (But it wasn't a hop on/hop off tour) Wasn't horrible, but I wouldn't do it again. Could have driven to most of the stop and even with parking, would have been cheaper.

You get to visit 5 different stops (mine was only four since it was the starting phase). I went on a Sunday tour, the tour differs between the two based on the dessert place (La Boulangerie on Saturday, Paleteria on Sunday). The tour was great, we start at Ocho, you get a taste of one of the popular dishes and history on SA, then start on foot towards Luke, receiving information about the city on the way. I enjoyed a great little dish and drink at Luke, then headed on to Nectar, and got a HUGE sampling of the meats and cheeses that they offer, from there we head to Zinc. At Zinc I tried one of the best guacs in town, and saw some of my fellow tour-ers the purchase a Prickly Pear Margarita, which was really really pretty. (Typically you visit a desert place last, but because i went on the tour before the Paleteria was confirmed, we skipped this stop.) The SA Food Tours staff is friendly and knowledgeable, they've put a lot of time and hard work into the tour, and its a great way to experience San Antonio's food scene and get some history at the same time. I've lived here all my life and learned and tried new things on the tour, it's worth it!
