This market has moved and substantially expanded its size since when I first went several years ago…read moreand there were tons more folks there this time. I've been a farmers market-goer for as long as I can remember and I'm thrilled how successful the Kalamazoo market has become in the last decade, but I really loathe claustrophobia-inducing crowds so I've been really enjoying hitting some of the slightly smaller neighborhood markets these days. Vicksburg has really hit the Goldilocks just-right point. Everything is represented but nothing's over-represented. They've got a separate section for crafters so if you're just there for food you can skip over the arts-and-crafts section and if you love shopping for locally made gift items, there's a spot for you, too. On today's visit, my friend and I were thrilled at the wide selection, ranging from smoked nuts to homemade gelato, baked goods to nicely priced local produce. I couldn't believe how big the kale bunch I bought for just $1 was. I won't be able to eat that much before it goes bad so I gave half of it to my neighbor. Really looking forward to tonight's dinner of tamales (served hot, even), and chips and guac that I picked up at the market, to be followed with a dessert of Michigan peaches and ice cream. La!

We were in Shipshewana on a day trip to see the huge quilt show. Lunch time arrived. We looked at…read morethe map of downtown attractions and saw "shaved ice." The idea of a cool, tasty treat sounded absolutely wonderful. When we spied the small, cute building, we started to wonder if shaved ice was all they had. We parked in the little one-way alley nearby. But the sign on the front promised substantial fortifications such as pulled pork, hot dogs and brats. We're going to be just fine! The front door and steps might be a bit tricky for a person with difficulty walking. The ladies were very friendly and welcoming. They went the extra mile to be sure that we were having a wonderful time having lunch at their place. They offered to carry our food outside for us when they saw that my friend was having a little trouble walking. There are small tables indoors with the air conditioning, or you can sit outside on the patio, shaded by parasols. There was a gliding table - seats four, and brochures in case you want one for your own home. We both had the pulled pork on a pretzel bun. Tender and flavorful by itself, but you can add condiments. Tomato salsa, pineapple salsa, BBQ sauce, etc. Get plenty of napkins for all the juice. The pineapple slaw was really delicious. It was a little spicy from cayenne pepper, and any crunch lost by the pineapple, cabbage and red onions to brining was more than made up for by the crunchy macadamia nuts. What a great combination of flavors and textures! You can get a bag of chips and fountain sodas to go with your meal. You get two sides of your choice. Be sure to get the pineapple slaw as one of them! Then, the reason we came: the shaved ice. I had never had it before. It's even better than a snow cone, because the ice melts just as your tongue touches it. The ladies made sure to give us plenty of syrup. My friend got lychee. My red raspberry ice made my lips and tongue turn bright red. Oh, and you get a special little surprise in the bottom - a gumball. Fun for kids of all ages!

We were greeted warmly and given a farm tour. Conversation with Kyle was inspiring as she is very knowledgeable, having studied abroad and taken a deeper interest in the regenerative practices of folks like regenerative rancher, and author, Gabe Brown. The little one got to pet a sheep and is still "moooo-ing" when he sees a picture of a cow. This multi-generational farmstead is doing it right. Cows eat grass in a low stress environment of open fields. Cows fertilize land and help capture carbon from the atmosphere. The animals benefit, the land benefits, the ecosystem thrives and my family benefits with healthier, tastier food. I feel so fortunate to have the benefit of choosing regenerative food sources from local farmers. I want to support real people making environmentally conscious decisions in their work. In return, my family is healthier. Everybody wins; My family, the farmer, the animals, the environment.... everybody. The decision to support Willow Farms is a no-brainer. Thank you for the work you do. BTW, my burger-game just got up-leveled, big-time! I don't even order burgers at restaurants anymore because it's not even the same food as this. Not even close!
