Interesting thing about this park is that it was once a landfill. Awesome to see it has been reclaimed. This is a great place to go to see the meadowlands shine. On top of the trails, there are various educational opportunities offered here, as well. The sounds of the turnpike can spoil the scenery at times, but that's isn't a huge deal. Give it a try!

For now, there are birds and trees, and if it hasn't rained too much recently the terrain will be navigable enough for you to walk to the Peckman River. It's not a tourist destination known internationally or maybe even in most of Passaic County but this was a good for a dose of faux rural vibes.

I grew up in Cedar Grove and have fond memories of Mills Reservation from the 1950s and 60s.  It…read morewas a great place to explore the natural wooded environment atop First Mountain ... and it still is.  The trails are great for hiking, biking, and jogging. Leashed dogs are welcome.  I highly recommend hiking to Quarry Point at the reservation's southern end.  The views east from here are spectacular -- all the way to the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline, and sometimes the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge.  Oh, did I mention that the reservation is a great place for bird watching?! Parking is limited. There are no buildings or restrooms in the reservation.

You can see Manhattan and even the Verrazzano Bridge from a few overlooks. If you're into Instagramming lots of trees and occasional rocks this is a fine spot. The trail is about a mile and goes around the lake. Some of it is boarded and much of it is in the shade. If it rained recently, than it may be muddy, otherwise sneakers or shoes are fine. It stays level and is good for elderly or kids. There's a lot of benches and a few lookouts as you go around. The preserve is exceptionally clean. I saw one plastic bottle, so I picked it up.

Today it is called the Celery Farm mainly a result of the fact that in 1888 Swiss emigrant Henry J…read more Appert and his wife Ella bought the 107 acre-property and converted the land which was an excavated peat bog into a farm which grew mainly celery and onions. The land has a rich history has seen this parcel of land transition from a glacial land to a peat bog, to a farm and now a nature preserve. The Wolf Clan of the Lenni Lenape gather here to hunt the abundant game in the area. Later in colonial times Founding Father John Fell took possession of the. In the 1080's the borough of Allendale bought the track of land and converted it into a nature preserve. The Celery Farm is an important site for migratory birds and thus bird watchers. There are several areas where birds can be observed including a raised platform overlooking the small lake. There are trails which run about a mile through the preserve. The trails are very wet in spots after any kind of precipitation. Roots and rocks jut up along the path making hiking uncomfortable. When I visited there were numerous hikers who wore masks and observed social distancing. Dogs are not permitted on the trails.

I love this park and have visited it a few times a month for several years. It's an odd…read morejuxtaposition: a swamp, a bird habitat, a major interstate highway, and a skyline view of the city. Mill Creek Marsh is super easy to get to and park (next to the pick-up area for Bob's Furniture) and has one main trail with some smaller trails. Depending on your schedule, you could stay for a while or do a quick circuit in 30 minutes. Great for bird watching and just getting out into nature. There's also a lot of great smells dogs appreciate here, it's my dog's favorite walk. ++ Steve K is correct, Yelp's Mill Creek Marsh has somehow been combined with The Secaucus Greenway, which is a completely different park.++ +++ Because its a swamp, sometimes (depending on the tide) it be stanking here. +++

Located in Woodland Park, Garret Mountain Reservation is a wonderful urban park. While they are…read moreneither as intense nor as remote as the Appalachian Trail, they do provide good terrain for a short walk, which my partner and I did today. Barbour Pond is a 1-mile (2,500-step) route with an elevation gain of about 0 ft and is rated as easy. The path has lots of ledges to sit on and watch nature. Today the landscape was dominated by people enjoying a beautiful low humidity, clear blue sky with a picnic, photo enthusiasts taking pictures of birds, or fishermen casting for some trout. It's a great place to unwind and enjoy nature.
