She tried again "they're buy one, get one for a dollar!" I declined again, and heard her whisper "dang it," and she looked genuinely sad... I asked if she got a kickback or something for selling candy, and she explained that the employees bonuses are based solely on how many candy bars they push, and further explained that they get a monthly "quota" they must meet as a team, and if the quota isn't met no one gets the monthly bonus, no matter how many items an individual team member sells. How much of a bonus, you may ask? $50/per employee. And the monthly candy quota? 14,000 candy bars. FOURTEEN THOUSAND. No one should be made to beg for a bonus which is essentially what this money-grubbing Corporation is forcing their employees to do. (I bought 4 candy bars.) Do better, Speedway.

It sits right on a two-lane coastal "highway," barely 1/4 mile from Lake Michigan, but would just as likely be found in some backwater Alabama swamp (not an insult, just an ambience). There was also a quintessential old farmer-type playing lottery scratch-offs by scratching off the barcode without actually playing the game on the front, then communicating with the cashier woman on a first name basis (Sarah). What a weird experience. I'm always interested in the colorful characters these tiny little towns and their stores. The pizza? Some of the best I've found south of Holland. The sauce had a hint of sweetness, and the crust had a couple of semi burnt bubbles that added to the delicious crunch of the crust.
