If I know one thing it's that we are all universally anxious about getting our haircut. The range…read moreof concerns are endless: will it look good, is the barber friendly, how much will it cost, is the person with the scissors going to throw a Sweeney Todd and so on. For those fellows out there who are looking for a standard, no frills but also no disasters (yet) haircut, then look no further then Figaro's. I switched to Figaro's after I got sick of paying a premium for a haircut and being consistently dissatisfied with the results. My thinking was, 'how much worse could it be if I just went to that Figaro's place'. Turns out they do a pretty decent job. Like those old style barbers there are no bookings or 'hair appointments' required, just come in, take a seat and wait. By the time you reach the barber's chair you have about 30 seconds to describe what you want before those scissors start snipping. Remarkably the barbers here are quite skilled. They can take initiative and their intuition often seems to work out - at least for me. Turns out I didn't know I wanted shorter hair before they gave it to me. Prices are absolutely reasonable: normally around $20 for an adult. As a side they only accept cash so be sure you have some handy. This wasn't the most intimate haircut I've ever had but it was pretty darn good. It was probably in and out of there in 30 minutes, including the time it took to wait for a barber to finish with another client. Though I was disappointed that I didn't get a head massage and an interesting insight into who my hairdresser is dating, what I got instead was a above average haircut for below average prices. This obviously won't do so some people, but it works for me.

The Office Group, located at The Emporium end of Fortitude Valley, is a venue for short-term hire as we had for a 2.5day conference or longer term office needs. It's not prime real estate for hot desking however freelancing friends. It ticked off so many needed boxes including location and facilities (full kitchenette, white board, wifi) however the receptionist, also our main contact during the week, could not have looked more pained to be there. Her temperament was as up and down as the hot then cold swing of the air conditioning in our room. Fixing these few experiential issues could see The Office Group soar into a venue that might provide corporate services but doesn't need to look stuffy corporate and doesn't act it to succeed either.

This one is tucked around the corner from Fortitude Valley train station and just off the main road, and it's got a lot going for it but there are a few bugbears - the Myport wi-fi system is ... what's the opposite of intuitive? Let's go with difficult. You need to sign in with a password but it logs you out pretty often and sometimes the password won't work when you try and get back in. Guh. Other than that the facilities are neat, compact, and I like some of the room designs, from two-man contract numbers up to big ol' meeting rooms for your whole national team (Hi Yelp APAC!).

Despite already going to a great place when I need a massage for a sore neck and shoulders (see…read moreSpring Hill Physio), sometimes when I've been shopping around the Valley all day or if I'm passing Valley Metro I'll stop at Temomin for one of their ten minute massages. They offer quick, cheap-ish ($13) relief from tense muscles, and even if the relief isn't as long-lasting as if you have a proper, table massage, it'll do the trick until you get home and unwind. At Temomin, massages shorter than thirty minutes are chair massages, rather than table massages where you lie down. The chairs are those crazy looking massage chairs that I always feel like a tool climbing onto. You have your face in the face holder thingy, with a single-use paper towel-ish thing between your skin and the chair. When they massage you, they do it with another paper towel thing between their hands and your neck which kind of puts a damper on the whole thing because it is a bit scratchy. Whenever my massage is over and I pull my face out of the face-rest, the paper towel always sticks to my face and I feel like a jerk, but I guess it's worth it for a quick massage. I can't comment on the longer, table massages at Temomin, but the chair massages are decent enough. Sure, they're a little bit scratchy, and ten minutes sure goes fast, but if your shoulders are sore from too much shopping, a quick shiatsu at Temomin will keep you going. I always wonder if the name Temomin is a Japanese word, because whenever I see it all I think of is someone getting a ten minute massage and when it's over saying 'ten more minutes' but being muffled by the face-rest/paper towel/massage-induced trance so it comes out 'temomin'. I should ask them sometime, but they probably already think I'm a weirdo with a paper towel stuck to my face.

Brad showed up on time to quote the job, he gave me no nonsense advice about how to solve the water leakage i.e. get rid of frameless screens, and provided a competitive quote for replacements. On the day of installation a week later, 2 installers showed up as promised and completed the job within 2 hours. They took away the old screens and all rubbish and did a thoroughly professional job. Hopefully I will never need them again for this type of work; however, I thoroughly recommend All Type Glass for all your glazing needs !
