Wild boar ragu

Amazing food and great service! The inside of the restaurant is packed with historical charm, but they also have an outdoor terrace where the same excellent service is offered. The chef sent a complimentary traditional thick Tuscan tomato sauce with bread. My companion had the wild boar ragu with pecorino cheese foam and laurel powder; just wow! And I had the Fagottini with pears and pecorino; it was fantastic! We also tried the desserts: one Tre in Uno, the traditional take on panna cotta, and the chocolate cake with fresh raspberry and hazelnut cream. This was our last night in Tuscany and we almost gave into fatigue and settled for a quick tourist bite before bed. So glad we made the effort to walk the short distance from our hotel to have this wonderful meal under the stars!

Truffle risotto

Nice spot in San Gimignano right off one of the main roads into the town. The truffle risotto was amazing with little bits of meat in it (guanciale I think). The pappardelle pasta with a wild boar sauce was fantastic as well! We also had the steak as a second course which was topped with delicious vegetables. Would definitely go back if ever in San Gimignano again.

Amazing and delicious dinner in San Gimigiano. So many delicious food options in this town. We showed up on Friday night without reservations and they seated us immediately. Cozy space with terrific service and an extensive food and wine menu. Take some time to take it all in. I ordered the eggplant dish which was spectacular. We paired our meals with a bottle of local Chianti Colli Senesi that totally enhanced the meal. I highly recommend this place and would certainly go back again.

Very good bruschetta

Burrata with Caramelized Cherry Tomatoes, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Basil

KenScale: 8.0/10 Italian wine, particularly from Tuscany, is the first wine that I've fallen in love with. The deep flavor of chianti and other sangiovese varieties has long been one of my favorite sensations to my taste bud and, not surprisingly, I made a point to spend at least a full day visiting the wine country of Tuscany after a couple of nights in Florence. My girlfriend and I decided to stay one night in San Gimignano after the wine tasting tours, which turned out to be the right choice as I was a huge fan of the lovely town with old castle walls still very much intact from which you can view the absolutely beautiful scenery of the countryside. Our way to San Gimignano was, however, very rough as we went through the thunderstorm on a rental car before finally making it to the hotel we were staying at. Obviously, we were starving by then and a dinner nearby the hotel would've been a nice break. Luck has it there was a charming restaurant nearby the hotel and we went through the rain to check it out. Peruca's cuisine is classic Tuscan from top to bottom. There is no fancy ingredient or technique; everything is just straightforward rustic cuisine from the region. I've always been pleasantly surprised with how moderate the kitchen is when it comes to seasoning, instead focusing on the freshness of ingredients and consistent execution. A simple dish of burrata with caramelized cherry tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil and basil was such a welcome start to the meal after our ordeal that we started zoning into the food. Pici (a type of thick, spaghetti-like pasta) came with sauce of wild boar, which seems to be the staple in the Tuscany region everywhere (on the stroll around San Gimignano the next day, I've spotted at least a half dozen places displaying wild boar-based paninis and other food). It was delicious without any heavy seasoning, allowing the wild boar sauce to really shine as it is. But the better dish was the risotto with black truffles, ham and zucchini flowers. Maybe I was being generous at the time due to my hunger from long drives, but I really struggled to remember a better risotto dish at that time. It was creamy in the most delightful way without overwhelming your palate, and the combination of ingredients made for a very rustic dish that you just can't drop your fork off of. After splitting the dish in half, I ended up stealing most of my girlfriend's portion too. Dining in the Tuscany region, we knew we had to try the famed Florentine steak. To this day, I'm still very shocked that the steak was the weak point at this otherwise enjoyable restaurant. Yes, I saw the meat was cooked more or less perfect medium rare, and the judicious use of salt or other seasoning meant that the meat's texture really had the opportunity to shine. The biggest issue, however, was the temperature. My girlfriend and I almost felt that the kitchen was bringing a steak dish that was left outside for an hour instead of one that was just grilled. Had the steak dish been more memorable, I would've given a lot higher score to Peruca. Maybe, our sense of food's temperature became dull after freezing in the thunderstorm, but we wished we ordered a different secondi dish, even though we were hungry enough so that we still devoured most of the giant meat. I really loved the dining space of Peruca that makes you feel like you're dining at a basement cellar of a charming winery. If you're looking for a romantic dinner after wine tasting tours, Peruca's vibe is exactly what you should be looking for. Make sure to complement your meal with a bottle of wine (there are so many solid choices at affordable prices starting at approximately 20 euros); I would suggest trying one from the Tuscany region and there are also San Gimignano selections. Other than the steak, Peruca offered pleasant dining experience that makes you feel good; I'll remember to try other secondi dishes on my next visit in the Tuscany countryside.

During our short trip to San Gimignano, my Italian foodie friend and I were determined to try the restaurant that offers local cuisine. We drove all the way from Parma (and I came all the way from NY!!), we didn't want to just settle for any normal food that's available anywhere. Unfortunately, we didn't find any Yelp reviews of the restaurants in San Gimignano and therefore I made my friend to search Tripadvisor with his iPhone to find a decent place that has high ratings. After reading a few positive reviews and consulting our budget (we didn't want to spend more than 30 Euros), we settled for Peruca. However, it was a bit hard to find this place.... it's well hidden in the back street. As we entered Peruca, we noticed the walls adorned with numerous gastronomic awards and the beautiful ambiance created by the medieval vaulted ceiling. Everything looked quite promising based on the first look so we looked at each other and nodded in silent agreement. All three of us loved the setting, it was very romantic, cozy, and charming. However, we were somewhat disappointed with the food itself, I have to say that the food was not as fabulous as the reviews led us to believe. Antipasti of zucchini was a bit too salty, we didn't even finish it. Crostone al lardo di Colonnata e fagioli bianchi was pretty good, it was nicely seasoned. Risotto Peruca which contained tartufo, prosciutto di cinta senese & fiori di zucca was 3 stars for me, it lacked the depth of flavor and wasn't memorable enough. Fagottini del contadino (square pasta filled with vegetables and ricotta) was better, it was well executed and simply delicious. For meat, I opted for Tagliata di manzo con rucola & lardo di Colonnata which was marinated in scrumptious sauce but the meat itself had too much gristle to fight with. Dessert was the best part of the meal, I enjoyed the semifreddo more than the chocolate cake. For the price and the ambiance, I'd give Peruca 3.5 stars. I wanted to like this place but it failed to win my heart. It's not a bad option but I expected more.

Gnocchi do not order
Nicholas G.

Not sure what the hype was about with this place. We have had some amazing meals in italy and this was not one of them. We ordered the gnocchi which had a very gummy taste to it and got caught on the top of our mouths. The sauce coming with it was also not great. Overall not a good dish. We are 0 for 2 on gnocchi dishes in italy. The steak peruca was pretty good. It was tender and cooked nicely. This came with tuscan wine beans which was a nice touch. We also ordered the cheese plate with marmalades. The marmalades were very nice and cheese was ok. Just couldnt get over how bad the gnocchi was. Maybe it was one bad dish.

Little hidden treasure in the streets of San Gimignano! Following all other advices, we ordered wild boar and pasta with sausage. Both dishes were great! Service is OK with few people serving many tables.

Dessert. Tiramisu was incredible.

Peruca was pretty fantastic. I docked one star because of the service. We didn't have a chance to make a reservation, but due to the incredible reviews we wanted to see if we could get a table. We got there right when it opened and as soon as we mentioned we did not have a reservation; the hostess and servers attitude completely changed. They put us in (what we think) their only non-reservation table in the corner. We didn't mind the placement, we just wanted to try the food. We waited a good 20 minutes before they came over to the table. The server was pretty rude to us and acted as if we shouldn't be there. But we ordered traditional ristorante style and were very pleased with the food. The thing I remember most was the tiramisu. It was the best I had all throughout France and Italy. Incredible. Typically in Europe, the tip is built into the meal, but I think they tried to take advantage of Americans by specifically placing a sticker on the receipt to as for tips. I thought that was a bit odd. Come for the food, not the service.... Unless you make a reservation ahead of time. :)

Beautiful historical atmosphere with excellent food!

What an incredible find...the only thing that was better than the atmosphere was the cuisine! Wonderful wine list also. Our servers were friendly, helpful and very welcoming!

The food was not great and service also below expectations. Was surprised at the high reviews. Also the food is not really 100% Italian!

This is one of the authentic restaurants that serves good and delicious Italian food…read more We came in a big group and everyone enjoyed themselves. We started with a bottle of wine supper soft and delicious. Then my mom wanted to try a Zuppa and she got the Porcini one. She ate it all. I ordered a Marguerite pizza. I loved it. The crust was so soft and crunchy at the same time. It really tasted the best pizza for me. My friend ordered but I can't remember the name of their dishes. But they love the food as well. The service was great. They were very attentive and helpful. I really enjoyed everything. If I was to go back I would go back there.

Must try! This is Tuscan food!…read more Very careful service and great beverage choices. We were the first for lunch. We were in San G for the day and went by all the cafe joints etc and saw this down a small street from the busy square. It wasn't open till noon but I asked my wife to wait 15 minutes. Well I created a buzz of some older tourist couples and they couldn't wait to try to by the time it opened. We went to the loft dining above and one server for his best to get lunch service underway. It wasn't quick but oh well. We all waited and savored and in the end it was Tuscan porcini soup from heaven, a roasted beef entree that was great! My porchetta dish was good but overheated and dried out. I saw how they did it when we left and if I knew better I would ask for a slice not cooked again. So much rosemary flavor! The most impressive part was our Tuscan tureen sampler with sauces and really good breads. The bomb. This was a splurge lunch but so worth it! They also had the care to bring my bottle of beer(wife drink wine I don't) with a frozen plastic cell bag to keep the bottle cold while I drink from the glass. Very impressive but simple service. Salads and desserts from other tables looked awesome and some older fellow next to us must be on Lipitor given the huge meat and cheese plate he ate as his meal! Kind of jealous but that was a better share dish for the table compared to the well crafted dishes we chose. But please folks don't dry out a wonderful porchetta slice!!!

We debated whether to do the 5 course tasting menu for two at lunch time since it was rather warm and we did not want a long lunch. But the restaurant manger convinced us otherwise since there were several appetizers we wanted to try -- we were happy we took his suggestion. For appetizers we had their signature dish the Mezzevo (chicken egg), followed by Scallops, then Spaghetti Mancini (which came out with a glass covering smoke that smelled the aroma of coffee) and for the main course the Sea bass with pistachos. Every plate was creative, beautiful and delicious. One of the owners, as well as the manager were both attentive and helpful in their descriptions of the various plates. Everything was perfect.
