Today marked Day 6 in Italy, and you would think ordering food would be getting easier by now. Nope. None. Nada. Zilch. Not even a hair better. Even the English menus still need an explanation attached to them. This cool Thursday afternoon I sat down outside at Ristorante Guido for my first meal experience in Siena. The waiter asked what I wanted to drink and apparently "water" in English translates to "this man isn't thirsty." He disappeared into the abyss and came back ready to take my order. Then what appeared to be the owner came strutting around the restaurant like Braveheart himself. Long fur coat, baggy pants, boots, and enough confidence to intimidate a grown Alabama man. She walks over and asks, "Are you not drinking anything?" I said, "Yes ma'am, water." She asked, "Clear or sparkling?" At that point I felt like I was taking a final exam. "Regular water please." Meanwhile, she continued prowling around the restaurant with her little dog Muffin -- or whatever his name was -- on a leash while giving customers the kind of stare that could make milk spoil. I asked the waiter if they had spaghetti and meatballs because I was craving something with red sauce. What arrived instead was spaghetti with garlic and fresh tomato sauce. Honestly? It turned out to be fantastic. The dish hit the table piping hot, fresh, beautiful as a Chilton County peach, and absolutely delicious. I could've eaten a second round, but I was scared Braveheart might circle back around my table. When I went inside to pay, the gentleman behind the Italian counter wasn't exactly overflowing with Southern hospitality. He reminded me of a mule eating briars. Efficient? Yes. Friendly? Not particularly. Overall though, the kitchen absolutely did their thing. The waiter was friendly and attentive, the outdoor seating was fantastic, and the food was excellent. Just be prepared for Braveheart making her rounds and the mule-eating-briars cashier behind the counter. One final note: if Italy would outlaw cigarette smoking while people are trying to eat outside, that would be wonderful. Still, solid meal and a memorable first dining experience in Siena. read more

Not off the beaten path (well maybe a little). The Caprese salad was exceptional with amazingly fresh tomatoes. A bit more basilico would probably up the ante here. The pappardelle with a wild boar ragú was killer and the cacio è pepe and black truffles were stellar. The drawback is eating outside and your food cooks down too quickly. Good music being played amid a busy outdoor environment, which mitigated some of the negative of the noise. For the wine, a 2020 Valdipiatta Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, it presented a dry bramble/wood notes with merlot notes if light blueberry and plum. Great middle of the road wine to cross between pasta and meat dishes. Does not need aeration. Very smooth and easy by itself or with a wild boar ragú and cacio e pepe with tartufo. Wandering Siena with no plan, we happened on Guido's for lunch. What a happy discovery. It exudes old world charm the minute you step in the door. My friend and I both had wonderful lunches- the highlight for me was the antipasto dish with the poached egg. I can't recall the name but it was both stunningly beautiful and delicious. It was a new dish to me and I was delighted. Our service was professional yet attentive. We recommended Ristorante Guido to others on our trip and I would definitely return. Food was okay. Service was Veryyyyy slow. Took about an hour after ordering for food to arrive. They also pulled a shady "out credit card machine is broken" ploy-- meaning that they probably don't pay their taxes. What would they have done if we had no cash? Great old school Sienese Italian place. Steak cooked in pork fat was sublime - I asked for mid-rare, it was more like rare but it was amazing and I wasn't complaining. Tagliatelle with pork sauce, beef tartare and squash blossoms also hit the spot. Excellent wine list. Service is old school elegant, inside an old cellar- like room. Dinner for two, with a bottle of Bolgheri, ended up at 100 euros or so. Highly recommended. read more

Only reason for 3 stars is that the food was good However, our filet was so undercooked sent it back and obviously wasn't even placed on the grill, more like under heat lamp. Settled for it as others in our party had finished their meals. Service was so so asked for second bottle of wine. Was forgotten. How does that happen? I was on a day trip tour through Tuscany and I did what any sane human being needs to do when they're traveling with a group: escape. We had the option to join our tourmates for a set lunch and I opted not to. I knew I had made the right decision when I saw their table set with paper plates and plastic cups. Off my mother and I went to speed walk through the winding streets of Siena. Somewhere near the Piazza del Campo we found Ristorante Guido by chance. Since it was early, we were the only customers. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. I imagined Ristorante Guido at dinner time, filled with life. I also stared at the cluttered walls and wondered who all these Italian celebrities were. Yup, Ristorante Guido is one of those restaurants that boast their fame and history through framed pictures. Want my picture, Ristorante Guido? We ordered the famous pici pasta. Pici, an insanely fat spaghetti, originates from Siena. It came with a plain ground beef Tuscan sauce (red). For varieties sake, we also ordered the pappardelle with wild boar sauce. I definitely liked the wild boar sauce better. It was heavier but had more flavor. Absolutely loved the pici noodles! When in Siena, you know... Service is slow. It's right on par for Italy standards but when you only have an hour to sneak away from your tour, it's a little cutting it close. Needless to say, we hightailed it back to the group. Undoubtedly the best dinner I have ever had. The setting, outdoor in Siena, was beautiful, our servers were friendly and knowledgeable and the food was inspired. Walked in, no reviews in hand. Place seemed popular, with lost of outdoor seating. We were seated inside, as there were no more outdoor seating. Few people inside. The walls are covered with famous people that have eaten there over the years. No famous people were there with me, so no photo. Had the grilled steak (excellent), other entrees were the Pici pasta (also excellent) and a caprese salad (could have that everyday). Finished with mixed green salad (just OK) and white truffel ice cream (very excellent). House Chianti was OK. They have an extensive wine list, but since I was the only one drinking, house wine it was. 80 euros for two. read more

My partner and I had opposite experiences. Overall, I enjoyed myself. The food, service, and atmosphere were all pleasant. Unfortunately my partner's ravioli with Tuscan "sauce" was much more of a meat ravioli. She told me the meat was "funky" and offered that I try it; she was right. Thanks to Rachel for pointing that one out, it's a real find. If you're in Siena and don't have much time, you won't find anything cheap anyway, so you might as well spend the same amount and go for quality. Guido is in a nice side street, not too far from the main square but far enough to afford calm and shade. Tables are white-clothed, staff wear black, and yet it manages not to look pompous, rather very friendly and courteous. The staff are obviously proud of their job and of the restaurant, and they should. Count from 10 euros per dish, all served rather quickly and nicely, and they are eminently satisfying - the sort of place where a few drops of olive oil make a whole difference, and if you order melon it will arrive impeccably ripe and flavoursome. There is largely enough for a simple and cheapish lunch, but the menu made a very tempting case for a more formal, gourmet dinner. read more

Let's work backwards: get the Tiramisu. Phenomenal!!! The pineapple with cointreau was definitely worth it as well. The osso bucco was so tender and the sauce was just the right amount of tomato and the right amount of subtle flavor. The waiter had a great sense of humor and an exceptional choice of wine to compliment our meals. and just off the main thoroughfares yet close to piazza Del campo, definitely worth stopping for a nice, slow mealtime in the heart of Siena. read more

We were looking for a good meal with a relaxing atmosphere. Guido's exceeded our expectations. Wonderful meal, great service, the maitre'd made us feel special. Beginning with the Pecorino/Asparagus fondue appetizer, the homemade pasta selections, topped off with a sensational tiramisu, a really terrific dining experience.
