Passing through Charleston and by accident discovered this gem of an Italian restaurant. I thought I'd had every type of pasta due to marrying into an Italian family but tonight I enjoy something unique to my taste buds. To top off a delicious meal, I had the Charleston Bread Brioche pudding with a scoop of local ice cream. Not sure it's going to make it into our rotation but the food was so good we're willing to give it another chance. The food compares favorably to any large city in the country. Both my meals were really good, the ravioli and scallop carbonara. IMO this is the best restaurant in the city, including south hills. The service was friendly and offered local suggestions when I said I was new to town. My only complaint was the up-charge for using a credit card. Nice location and nice environment. The food here is amazing! I went this evening & got calamari for an appetizer (7/10), Caesar salad (9/10), eggplant parmigiana for the entree (9/10) & a flourless chocolate torte (11/10!) for dessert. Our server was great. She was very attentive, & down-to-earth. It's a restaurant at the ballpark, so the atmosphere may not seem like fine dining, but the food makes up for it! Highly recommend trying it! read more

While in the area I wanted to try something local and was in the mood for Italian. The pesto risotto caught my eye and I knew I had to try it! When we arrived, we were seated right away. Our server was prompt and told us about the specials. We already knew what we wanted - the pesto risotto & salmon with the chicken alfredo. While waiting, we tried the bread with olive oil but it was a little strong for us. The pesto risotto was better than I could have hoped for. The salmon had a nice crust on it for the perfect flavor. I wasn't impressed with my fiancé's pasta, but he enjoyed it which is all that matters. If it had been my dish I would have asked for more sauce - it was very dry. We ordered the chocolate torte for dessert and it was amazing. Very rich deep chocolate flavor. It was hard not to eat all of it! Even though I liked the Fettuccine alfredo, it was a little dry and could have used more sauce. My Fiancé had the Salmon and it wasn't evenly cooked, but they did take care of it and made her a new one and it was incredibly good. It makes me wish I would have gotten that instead. The dessert we got was great and I am not even a huge chocolate person. The atmosphere was ok, nothing crazy fancy or anything, but it was neat to be able to see most the kitchen and the chef's making food. The staff was nice, accommodating and come over to us often. We aren't from the area so it was interesting to find, its in a building on the main floor, but depending on how you approach its not very obvious where to go. I am interested in trying Ristorante Abruzzi again when we are in town. read more

Food was 5 stars! Everything was full of flavor. Definitely the most flavor packed food we've had in Charleston. We started with the venison white bean chili, Caesar salad, fried goat cheese salad, the risotto balls. Then for our entrees we had lobster ravioli and the hernshaw mushroom pasta. Honestly everything was good. The mushroom pasta was probably the best thing-- if I had to pick. I want to go back for more! Service was very attention and great too. Major Improvements Required! Four friends met here for dinner on Saturday, July 19, 1925. We made a reservation, but no reservation was necessary as the place was not busy. We began with a glass of the 2021 Tiziano pinot grigio and the featured blackberry old fashioned cocktails. The cocktails were nothing special, a well-made classic old fashioned would have been more enjoyable. The pinot grigio was bland and at 4 years old was likely beyond its prime drinkability. Menu prices are high and the restaurant sadly does not offer half-portion salads so we skipped the starter / first courses. Main course orders were crab cakes with potato and corn succotash, scallops carbonara, fettuccine Alfredo with chicken, and Bolognese pappardelle. The pastas are homemade, but were flavorless and overcooked. The pasta dishes would have been much better if made with "De Cecco" pastas. The crab cakes and scallops were good, but the Alfredo and Bolognese sauces were far from their delicious potentials. All of our entrees were served in dishes that had not heated prior to the foods going in them. As a result the entrees were only warm when served, a major failing for a restaurant in this price range ($40 to $60 per person). We finished with a tasty ricotta cheesecake with a blackberry sauce. Service was not friendly, a major problem at these prices. Our server began removing empty dishes while we were still dining. She stopped when told the table should not be cleared while guests were still eating. The bills came offering discounts for cash payment. I strongly believe the bill should be the same whether cash or credit card. We will not be returning or recommending this restaurant. The food quality, cocktails, and wine programs all need more work. And the service issues must be addressed. read more

Had the best business dinner the other night here with colleagues from the local hospital CAMC General. Welcoming atmosphere and efficient service. in a space that was conducive to conversation. First of all, I cannot believe it took me so long to make it here. I was not a big fan of Paterno's, so the fact that this took over for it may have played a part in that. But I am a huge fan of Charleston Bread! Anyway, I was craving Italian food so I decided to check this place out. It was not super busy at 6:30 on a Friday night. My friend and I were able to get in without a reservation. She had the salmon with the butternut squash risotto and liked it a lot, especially the sauce. I had the fettuccine alfredo with chicken, which was very tasty except I prefer my pasta to have a bit more of a bite to it. But overall the food was good, and I will definitely return to try some other things on what is a good size menu. Service was just so-so. I went with a group of friends to have dinner at Ristorante Abruzzi on New Years Eve, 12.31.2019. For the most part we had a lovely, fun time .... which is why I'm torn between between giving the restaurant a 4-star or a 5-star review. While everyone agreed that the food was generally quite good, the eggplant parmigiana I ordered was fairly disappointing. What I eventually got after some delay was a couple of slices of breaded, someone under-fried eggplant, DROWNED in a round bowl of thick spaghetti and unremarkable sauce. It was more spaghetti than eggplant. That by itself would not cause me to subtract a star for the overall experience, since I can just chalk it up to a staff being somewhat swamped on a festive New Year's Eve. What WILL cause me to subtract a star from any restaurant review is how LOUD a place is, something that too many restaurants suffer for. Visually Abruzzi's is a great place, with tasteful lighting, appealing decor, and comfortable seating at tables that aren't too crowded together. But Abruzzi's is also a high-ceilinged, rectilinear space with a lot of hard, sound-reflecting surfaces, so that when there's a crowd there, the room can get very LOUD for people wanting to be heard in conversation, and I wasn't the only person in my group to remark about this. Some acoustic paneling would definitely help reduce the decibel level. read more

They shut the doors before the restaurant was scheduled to close so after ubering there we had to leave to find another place to eat. We got there around 8pm and they were supposed to close at 9pm. When we walked in they told us the chef decided to close early and wouldn't serve us. read more

There is very little I love in life more than starchy food, so I was READY for Abruzzi. Their pasta and bread are both locally made, so another plus in my book. Staff was pleasant, the interior is nice if sparse, the menu looked good. The food, however, was underwhelming. Caesar salad-not bad, but it didn't really taste like caesar, more like a rather bland Italian. The croutons were spot on, though, so I have hope it can be fixed. Lasagna- again, a little bland. No kick of garlic, tangy tomatoes, or spicy meat. The pasta was very thin, which could be considered good or bad depending on your preference. I would have liked it thicker, but it wasn't a deal breaker. Fettuccine alfredo- the best of the dishes we got. It was very rich and creamy, a little too salty, but the biggest lack was garlic again. The dish is described to have "garlic cream sauce", but I didn't taste any garlic. Also, the pasta was thin here again and it ripped whenever you tried to spin it on your fork. I would've liked a bit more texture and bite. Overall, it's not great. They did just open, so I'll revisit in a few months to see if the menu shakes out. read more

Man, where do I start? Made reservations, which was a breeze. Called to change them, and they were super friendly and accommodating. Parking was convenient. Interior of the restaurant was clean, well-appointed, and had a great vibe. Date and I ordered the spaghetti & meatballs and chicken parm, respectively. We were in the mood for classic Italian. Waiter was great and checked in often. The dishes were FANTASTIC. Possibly the best version of both we had ever had. The red sauce and pasta (locally made by Charleston Bread Co) were to die for. The meatballs were rich, but with a delicate texture. The chicken parm was phenomenal. The only aspect that wasn't stellar was the complimentary bread, which was just very plain and nothing to write home about. That said, this is definitely a hidden gem in Charleston, and my new go-to spot for Italian. Highly recommended! read more

I had the chance to meet some friends for lunch. I had no idea what to expect. Since it is run by the Charleston Bread Company, I hoped that would be a plus. We went at noon and it wasn't busy. (Honestly I wonder if people know it's open since it was a restaurant that had closed). The service was good. The food real good!!! I had a pizza that came with a small salad. My friends each had salad (could have had soup instead) and half sandwich. One friend had a 1/2 meatball sub and the other 1/2 Italian meat sub. Everyone was happy with their choices. Came for a casual weeknight dinner. Scallops and risotto were phenomenal. However, a few little details are being overlooked. The bread was cold and obviously from a tube. Warm salad plate and tasteless store bought croutons do not justify the $12 a la carte Caesar salad. Just a recommendation to attend to these little details and perhaps pay for a bread service. The food was really good, but the service was terrible. The first bite of my chicken there was a giant black hair that came up with my fork. I was disgusted, but my friends told me not to make a big deal out of it so i didn't, i just set it to the side and went about eating the rest of my food. The noodles were kinda cold, but the chicken was actually really good. Our waiter came over and asked us if we wanted more bread, to which we replied yes. She never brought us more bread, she never filled up our waters, she never even came back to ask us how the food was. But here the part that gets me.. we were the ONLY table in there, so she wasn't busy. I don't know, the food was okay but the service was awful. Food was decent though I wouldn't call it spectacular. I did like the bread being several different types, though I would have prefered it warm rather than cold, and i've never been a fan of truffle oil breads. Given the prices, I had hoped there might be something that stands out but nothing really did. They sat us outside by the ball field, and that's really my single largest complaint; the noise of the crowd and such made it impossible to hear each other. to top it off, the ENTIRE parking lot of the neighboring strip mall had been co-opted for game-day parking, even though I have NO interest in ball game. Save yourself a buck and park in the hospital lot instead, they'll only charge you $4 at most, where as the parking for the ball field charges $5, and it's a shorter walk. (if you can find parking the street, take it) If you're there for a pre-game dinner and that's your thing, have at it.. If you're not interested in baseball, don't bother, there are better options Given the price of the dinner, the lack of any real standout quality, I doubt i'll be returning anytime soon. I can get a better meal, with better service, better food, better atmosphere, for less cost. This new Italian place is owned by Libby McIntyre and her husband: owners of Charleston bread. They have brought authentic Italian food to our humble city of Charleston. Last night had the ravioli with pesto sauce (I should have ordered pesto cream sauce) and my friend had the salmon with pasta. Both were top notch, though I found I had food envy with one bite of the salmon. We ordered a side of risotto. It was good, but I prefer mine a bit more creamy. I requested marinara during my lunch and was told it was only available for dinner. Other than that, my dry pizza was not terrible. Luckily I wasn't in the mood for a traditional Italian meal because those are not available during lunch either. Oh but I hear their egg salad sandwich is to die for. My friend got the potato soup and just raved about it. My other friend said chicken noodle wasn't bad either. Lastly, my friend that ordered the Angelo's sausage and pepper sub said it was succulent but a little messy with all MARINARA dripping down his chin. They must have broke some rules for him. Finally a real Italian Restaurant that Charleston needed. The atmosphere is wonderful, a bit noisy. The food was far better than anything Italian I have had in Charleston.
