Local spot full of locals. Coffee was okay, nothing worthy of mention. Breakfast was edible but my omelette eggs were over cooked and nothing was blended. The ham and onions were on the plate and not inside the eggs. And the one slice of cheese was layered on top of the omelette like an afterthought. Never a good thing when your server brings your breakfast and you smell her cigarette stink and not the food. My guess is that this place stays in business simply because there is no where else serving breakfast in this area. BEST VALUE IN SPARTA!!!! The front is unassuming, borderline deterring. The sign is easily missed and misspelled coming from both directions, but this restaurant is OBVIOUSLY a local favorite due to the number of people occupying seats on a Tuesday morning. I'd read all the rave reviews and was encouraged by how full the parking lot was on a Monday morning. My mistake. I ordered a 2-egg tenderloin breakfast, and was profoundly disappointed. They'd run out of the grits I was craving, and opted for the home fries, which arrived burnt absolutely black and had no seasoning whatsoever. The tenderloin was beyond well done, bone-dry and tough as shoe leather. What truly boggled my mind was that, considering how poorly the potatoes and pork were cooked, the (much harder to get right) biscuit was sheer perfection - tall, pillowy, and indescribably delicious. I go here occasionally. Good breakfast at a great price! You may have your order taken quickly, but I almost always have to get my own coffee refills. In most restaurants my tip will reflect this, but I usually overlook it here, since it's a hometown place. read more

Usually breakfast for our family of 3 would run around 30 to 40 dollars sounds about right for most places. We ordered a lot of Al cart items & the bill was barely over twenty dollars! The food was fresh & hot. Pancakes homemade not some frozen brick they thawed out. Eggs fresh & the meats cooked to perfection. We also got hash browns which were just the way I like them crispy on the outside but not over done or dried out or soggy. Biscuits where a nice size and the white gravy was generous. I grew up here and there was never much to choose from for local breakfast spots, so I was excited to see Rise & Shine open when I visited last. the upsides were that the staff was friendly, welcoming and made us feel at home and the prices are very low for what you get. Unfortunately, the food left a different impression. The picture of the food looks great, but the taste was far from anything that the picture displays. The ham was really thin, tough and extremely salty, probably the saltiest country ham I have ever had in my life; I love country ham but I couldn't even finish half of it. The eggs were good and the hash browns were fine. The biscuits were cold and dry like they had been setting out for a while. I really hate to give such a negative review because the place is welcoming and homey, but the food was just mediocre. read more

I had my hopes up for some good road food while riding through Tennessee. Unfortunately we stopped here. It is not a chain restaurant, but in this case that was about the only plus. The servers managed to ignore us for a while but we were finally waited on after several groups who came in after we did already had their drinks and their lunch orders in. The catfish was fairly tasteless as we're the sides which seemed to be right out if the food service can. My wife ordered a bowl of soup beans and was brought a very small bowl with just enough beans to cover the bottom, but the waitress took the bowl back and got some more added. The beans were the bright spot of the lunch, and were served with a very dry cornbread muffin. We won't be back. read more

Catfish was good, cole slaw good, turnip greens good; french fries just like I like them (served hot, crispy on the outside, steamy in the middle). The pinto beans were really good, but they were stingy with them. The hushpuppies were delicious - but again, they were stingy (only two little ones...that was disappointing). Service was excellent - pleasant and efficient. Sweet tea was perfect. So all in all, no real complaints. Probably could have asked for more hush puppies - and pinto beans. Next time... As to the place itself, only complaint was that the windows were dirty. That bothered us, but then there did seem to be some kind of construction going on in the area. Still, if it was our place, I'd see to it those windows were washed. Here's the point I most wanted to make: SOMEONE IN THERE KNOWS HOW TO COOK SOUTHERN. And we hear they serve a fine breakfast.
