For a bit of background, I am a white belt with about 6 months of training (5 days a week) at my home gym. I had a great experience during both of the classes I attended. The no-gi class was very small, with only 2 other students and the instructor (it was Black Friday, so other students were probably busy buying new TVs and stuff). The small class was awesome for getting one-on-one instruction from the coach, Dave. It was a pretty standard class structure with warm ups, then drilling, and finally rolling. The warm up was light, and we moved immediately into drilling a north-south choke. I really liked the style of the drills because we slowly worked through the motion to properly get into the position, and then establishing the choke. We moved on to proper defense options for the same choke, and we had a chance to work among ourselves while the coach oversaw and provided feedback. During the gi class, we warmed up with some positional sparring from guard, and then moved on to a lapel choke and an arm in guillotine choke for drilling. The coach for this class, Patrick, provided a detailed walk through of each portion of the techniques, and was quick to give pointers during drilling. The class had a solid attendance of white through brown belts, and each person I worked with provided great live feedback as we trained. Everyone I encountered during my visits were very friendly, and put to rest any anxiety I had about training outside of my home gym. I thought the teachers did a fantastic job of explaining the proper techniques, the concepts behind them, and providing input as we drilled. Since this was my first real experience away from my home gym, I was nervous about rolling with unfamiliar people, but I quickly became comfortable with the other students because no one was trying to crank submissions, and everyone was very careful about safety. I am already planning to stop back here when I am in town again. If you are from the area, and you are looking for a way to get in shape, and/or learn real self-defense, then you should absolutely visit High Ground to see if it is a good fit for you! A big thank you to Tom for allowing me to visit his gym, and keep up with my training while away from home!

Let me start by saying, I have tried so many outlets to assist with my fitness and health…read more It started with Ballys, then went to LA fitness Lucille Roberts Planet Fitness Curves The Kroc BLINK back to Planet Fitness various aerobic sessions (Zumba and Tabata) and finally neighborhood walks/jogs. None of these things kept my attention. I got bored after about two weeks. I am a quitter and I am someone that does not like challenges. I love my comfort zone and I love to eat my feelings. It's what I do. Stout has changed that! My very first class, western boxing, taught by Ty. I don't know a thing about boxing. I do not watch boxing, I know some big names but I do not watch. So I show up at 5:20pm, I'm just standing there, ready to run out (again, quitter). He walks over, introduces himself, and tells me to warm up with shadow boxing. I said I don't know how to shadow box. He gave me the option of jumping rope or jumping jacks. I didn't want to do that, I don't know why but I didn't. he said you got this. I immediately said, ya know what I do. Stoutpgh and their staff is not intimidating AT ALL. It may feel that way if you have never stepped in the facility or if you are thinking about previous Arts schools and maybe they were jerks. Everyone is helpful, constantly guiding you and correcting you with positive reinforcement but also praising you when you do something good! I do love hearing "Good Kia" or "Nice Kia" or "Great job Kia" Class two, it was a bag class. I met Brody, he introduced himself. I stood in front of the heavy bag confused. before I could even get his attention, he came over and assisted me. I walked out of that class throwing 1, 2, and 3 (didn't know what a 3 was), and a switch kick. NICE! I went to class three, signed up that day. Zack, said you have another free class. I said, I don't need it. lets get this party started!!! I want you all to know, I am 44, 4'11, and 263.7lbs. I do not feel like the "fat chick", or the "old chick", I feel like a person. Stoughpgh let's you be a person, not a label. Many times we think we have to get in shape before starting something to get us in shape. How bass ackwards is that??? I didn't think Stoutpgh was for me, I didn't think I could do it. Boy, was I wrong! It is for me, it is for EVERYONE and EVERY BODY!!!! Again, EVERY BODY!!!!!! I look forward to class, actually look forward to going. I am so surprised by that, haha! Staff Cleanliness Availability of Classes Prices Oh last thing, I am funny about what I eat throughout the day. I know I have to train so the idea of just eating anything, I stopped that. I know what will make me feel sluggish, bloated, or just gross. I care about what I take in so that I can be productive during class. No one said anything to me about how/what to eat but it's like my brain clicked on a light that has clearly been dark for a long time.

My two young children have been going for about a month now and truly love it. They get so very excited when they have classes. My son was very nervous when he first started. It took a couple of times to get use to it. I have seen him become way more confident since starting. I am excited to watch them grow and push themselves to learning new things at Stout. If you or your children or both have been looking to get more active or challenge yourself, I highly recommend Stout. It's for all levels of experience. Go check it out and you won't be disappointed!

It is a Pedro Sauer affiliate, with several of the instructors students of Master Sauer himself. Under the leadership of Tony Rinaldi, students are taught extremely technical, fundamental concepts of BJJ, with a focus on technique. There are 9 other black belt instructors who either teach or assist with classes, so everyone gets careful instruction and attention to ensure that lessons, drills and rolling (sparring) is done properly and safely. Ohio BJJ offers classes 7 days a week, and several classes each day to fit any schedule. Each class has a large number of students, which offers a variety of ages, skill levels, body types and both male and female students to give a lot of experience against different partners. The gym members themselves are all laid back and helpful. This isn't your 'tough guy' type of gym, it feels like more of a club atmosphere. New members are quickly welcomed and made to feel a part of the team. There are no real formalities, uniform requirements, or strict rules to memorize, just straight up pure BJJ. Oh, and forget about testing fees, and required advancement ceremonies. When you've proven yourself and earned a stripe or new belt, it is awarded to you by the instructor on the spot. Advancement is not just given after a period of time either. Every stripe is merit based, and when it is placed on your belt you know that you've proven yourself. If you are experienced with martial arts or looking to just get started, this is the place to go, hands down.
