Toilets, trash, and dog waste area
Mandie V.

We only live 20 minutes away, but wanted to be close to home because we were taking a new-to-us pop up, a 3 year old and a 5 month old puppy camping for the first time - brilliant, I know! This campground came highly recommended because of all the stuff for kids to do - not a lie!! There's at least a half dozen playgrounds of various "skill levels," a movie screen, RC track, bouncy slide, paddleboats, pool, sluice, creek to explore & swim/fish in, a rec room.... I'm sure I'm forgetting! Plus a dog park! The night we set up it was hot, but by the time we were done we couldn't take our little guy swimming - the pool looked nice and always had folks in it. The snack shack was (shockingly) reasonably priced! We got coffee and it was HOT. The campstore was well stocked and also not excessively overpriced! We liked that they texted us reminders - events, check out time. The rest of our stay it rained and was chilly, so we didn't get to play too much on the playgrounds, but my son loved what he did see. Additionally, there are many toilets - they're tiny, but if you want to pee inside with TP and lights and running water, they definitely do the job. There were also several trash areas, and many of the trash had a dog waste area with bags provided. This place was CLEAN. We didn't see any dog poop or trash anywhere. After the very hot day, the bathroom was a little buggy, but that's not the campgrounds fault - the bathrooms were VERY clean. Our ONLY complaints, the wood was a little expensive and you can't bring in outside wood (that said, it is kiln dried so it lights practically instantly and you only need a little bit if you're just cooking a quick meal) and there was no grate/rack on the fire pit! Thankfully, since we're close by, we ran home and grabbed a spare smoker rack. There were a lot of "perma-campers," people that clearly come for every weekend or all summer, and they were SO nice. Everyone was friendly - the campground wasn't loud and I never worried about our safety. I can see why people stay there for extended times, we've already decided we may make it our inaugural trip every year.

We have had so much rain this season thought this weekend would be buggy as our site was in amongst the pines. Initially setting up we had a few bugs then the rest of the long weekend was just great! It is located just outside of the town of Saugerties, yes the boyhood home of Jimmy Fallon, which offered many restaurants if you don't feel like cooking at camp. The well kept campground is centrally located to many scenic areas Woodstock, Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck NY. This is our third time staying here and truly enjoyed our long weekend.

This place is beautiful. My husband and I stayed on lovers Lane which is a little cul-de-sac for adults that don't want to be around children lol. they make fresh breakfast and it's pretty darn good. Fried egg sandwich with ham and cheese. Runny yolk I mean no frozen junk. Nice pool area. they are right on the river. We had a blast.

Great large wooded private campsites. Full hookup sites that feel like you are in a secluded wooded state campground. Very quiet, beautiful setting along the Plattekill Creek. Lots for kids to do when fully open (pool, paddle boats, outdoor movie theater, race track for carts of some sort). We loved it for a weekend and reasonably priced.

Our first time camping here. This group of friends has been campaigning together for over 28 years. We are so coming back next year. We had a beautiful group site. The staff keeps everything immaculate. In addition they take all the neccessary precautions to keep people safe during Covid Pandemic. Many of us have had a rough year as the rest of our fellow Americans have. Some of us have lost people we love from Covid. We appreciate the staffs efforts and concern with keeping people safe. The staff is super friendly and accommodatin. They go out of their way to keep our smiles going. Great experience! I highly recommend. Thank you RIP Van Winkle Campground!

This is a delayed review given that we went camping on weekend of July 21st. I would definitely go again and I highly recommend this campsite. We stayed in site #84 (part of the River Edge - lake view), this site was close to water and bathroom, showers are a bit further but a 3 minute drive (20 min walk), no electric outlet for this site. Unfortunately, I could not get cell phone reception (I have T-mobile). Facilities are quite clean, showers are coin operated (25 cents for about 8 minutes). General store has plenty of supplies and wide selection of items (fire bundles special 3 bundles for $20 - pretty good deal compared to some other campgrounds). Staff are friendly and helpful and will recommend some great places to hike. Additional tips: Rather than lugging all of our food supplies from NYC to location, we stopped at Price Chopper to gather our food supplies and ice (Price Chopper, 138 Ulster Avenue, Saugerties, NY 12477).

My husband & I along with our 3 chihuahuas were in search of a dog friendly campground not too far from NYC. We found the perfect spot at Rip Van Winkle Campground. The name evokes a story book feeling and it lives up to the name. We arrived around 6pm without reservations on a Friday in August and were able to book a campsite next to the creek for only $47. This place is huge! They are very welcoming to dogs and gave our chihuahuas dog treats when we arrived :) The drive from NYC was about 2 hours and it mostly highways until you reach Saugerties. My favorite part is the creek where you can relax when it's hot. There's even a swimming hole where you can jump into the water. There are a lot of RVs and it looks like people stay there for the whole season. They are a bunch of cabins which include electricity and running water. We will definitely be back!

I love coming to this camp ground. Friendly staff, super clean facilities and all around relaxing environment! I look forward to camping here every year.

Follow the riverside trail for a better view of the creek.

Beautiful campground in the Catskills region! The grounds and facility are well-kept and the staff was very helpful and friendly. I tent camped in a group of 4 in the Riverside section and while our neighbors were quiet, the campsites seemed very close together. The additional fees for extra tents & adults was also a bit high. But I guess that's the price you pay for beautiful scenery. ***Free coffee between 8am-11am!

Are the tents included or do you have to bring your own? And what about wildlife? Are there bears around? Thx!

You have to bring your own tents. I haven't seen any wild life at all. Never seen a bear but that doesn't mean it's not a possibility

Great visit to Kaaterskill Falls on Wednesday, October 7, 2026…read more Decided to visit mid-week to avoid the crowds as it approached peak fall colors...I think October 7th was a bit too early...another week or so would have been better for colors. I have read that the Main Trailhead Lot (Laurel House Road), closest to the waterfall trails, fills up quickly during the fall. I arrived there at 8:30am and was the 9th car in the 40-50-capacity parking lot. When I left at 11:30am, the lot was full and staff was routing visiting from the main road (North Lake Road) to the Scutt Road parking lot...which is a bit further away from the falls. Once parked, the fall viewing platform was a short 0.1 mile walk. It offers some lovely views of the falls from higher up. From there, the walk to the lower falls was about 0.5 miles, but be advised that there are lots of steps (over 300) to get from the top of the falls to the bottom of the falls. You can walk even further from the base of the falls, along Spruce Creek, toward Route 23A and you will get to Bastion Falls. Since I arrived earlier, there were too many people on the trails...which made picture-taking a lot easier. I suspect the crowds increase as the area approached peak fall colors and on the weekends...so plan accordingly. The falls were great...I actually preferred the lower falls viewing area, for its consistent lighting and heavier waterfall flow. The upper was very high but the flow wasn't as heavy. The park is well-maintained with efficient trail marking and directional signage throughout. Free to park and enter the park/waterfall area. Port a potties in parking lot...are as clean as you can expect from a popular public parking port a potty.

If however you decide not to go down to the bottom, there is a viewing platform . The waterfall pressure/flow can vary depending on when you visit. Heavy after rain or less during the summer months. Swimming is allowed in the basin , the water is cold . The fall and parking are free in designated parking lots. There was a porta potty in tje lot we parked in. Not sure if there's one in each parking lot though. Don't park anywhere along the roads as you will get ticketed and/or towed. Arrive early aa the parking lots fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Personally I wouldn't do this trail on a rainy day especially if you're a beginner. Lots of stepping stones that can be slippery when wet. Other than that it's one of the most beautiful trails I've been on.

There was SO much wildlife we saw just on the grounds - friendly deer, baby turkeys, and baby ducks. We were fortunate to have a few nights here without any neighbors and it was so serene and beautiful even in intense rain and fog. Unfortunately, I came back when it was much more crowded, and that definitely affected my overall experience, so I had to lower my rating. One of the biggest issues this time was the shower. The water never got hot enough, and the water coming from the showerhead sprayed everywhere, making it difficult to shower comfortably. On the positive side, they were very attentive. They replaced the towels whenever I requested them, and whenever I sent a text, they responded almost immediately. I also noticed that the tap water from the sink tasted different compared to my visit in March, which was a little disappointing. As for the food, it seems like most of it is frozen and then baked or heated when ordered. I tried the pesto chicken flatbread. The flavor itself was good, but the chicken tasted like it had been frozen and defrosted, which took away from the dish. I also ordered spicy chicken bites, but unfortunately, I wasn't given the spicy version. The games are a nice touch and definitely add to the experience. One of my favorite things to do is sit in the common area and read. It's cozy and comfortable, and I enjoy being able to relax there even when other people are around. Overall, I still appreciate the atmosphere, the common areas, games, and attentive staff. I just think the experience is significantly better during the off-season when it's less crowded.

We booked the Family Cabin, which was decent, but there were a few areas that could use improvement. The water pressure in the bathroom was noticeably low, which made showering a bit inconvenient. Also, there wasn't a clear or accessible place to dispose of trash once it piled up. It would be helpful if staff came around periodically with trash bags or provided designated disposal areas closer to the cabins. On the positive side, the 24-hour front desk text service was extremely convenient. Anytime we had a question, someone responded quickly. The cabin itself didn't have an oven, but it did include a stovetop and microwave, which was enough for simple meals. I also appreciated that they offered free coffee and access to bikes, which added to the overall experience. AutoCamp has a great concept and a beautiful location. With a few adjustments to the cabin amenities and trash management, it would make the stay even better. Overall, still a solid spot for a unique getaway in the Catskills.

Definitely returning when the sun is actually out. I did the 8.7-mile Castle Point hike (my gut says it wasn't QUITE that long, but I don't want to argue with my book) from the Awosting parking lot down the Mossy Glen Trail (yellow blazes), making a left onto and up Blueberry Run (blue) to Castle Point itself, and then went basically straight down the cliff on the Scenic Trail (lavenderish and formerly light blue), down the Rainbow Falls Trail (orange) and finally making a right on the Lower Awosting Carriageway back to the parking lot. Wasn't crazy about the $10 fee to park - nature shouldn't cost anything - but it is what it is. It's really a shame the weather was crappy because I could tell that viewpoint at Castle Point is legit - it's sprawling and you can see for miles in almost every direction. That's a very cool spot and easily the highlight of the hike. There are some interesting viewpoints throughout the rest of the adventure, but I'd say they're primarily of rock formations and water features, which have their selling points but nothing beats a view at the top. I'm in decent hiking shape right now, and this was just not particularly challenging for me. The only part where I was even a little out of breath (and it was humid, so grain of salt in that regard) was on Blueberry Run, which was a pretty steady incline up, but really not hardcore at all from my perspective. The drop down from Castle Point on the Scenic Trail IS a little tricky and you really want to spend some time there figuring out where your foot is going to go next. Compared to other parks in the tristate area, this one definitely has more hazards, cliffs you could potentially fall down, etc. But same token, it has a ton of these completely flat carriageways as well. It rained while I was on the Rainbow Falls trail and I DID slip/fall on some of the rocks at one point, but that's on me since I willingly came over here knowing what the forecast was. Wasn't impressed by the Rainbow Falls themselves, and neither were the other hikers who were there at the time. Maybe it was just not an ideal situation for them, but it's been rainy the last few days so unclear when you should take advantage of the optics there. The trail blazes were EXCELLENT, easily some of the best I've ever encountered. Each official trail had an accompanying sign that not only gave you the name of the trail, but a map of the nearby area, the grade profile so you can see what types of inclines/declines you'll experience on that trail and tons of basic facts. Really well done stuff. The bathroom situation was pretty good as well, with ample restroom options in the parking lot albeit without plumbing. You get what you get, but I'll take a clean bathroom situation in a heartbeat, regardless. Okay wildlife sightings. The rain I'm sure kept some of the good quality shizzle away, but I got a cool shot of a black vulture and saw an edgy newt. Worth the trek and will return for further investigation shortly.

Bottom line: Don't come without a car. Come midweek or during off-season…read more I had a negative experience but I can't blame that on the owners or the campground itself. First, the good: it's a clean and well maintained campgrounds and the owners are friendly and attentive. My friend and I never had trouble finding a staff member when we needed help. As advertised, the area is beautiful and there are tons of trails and things to do nearby... if you have a car. Because there are no nearby towns, it gets very dark and we were able to see the Milky Way from the campground, a pleasant surprise. Next, the neutral: yes, the tent lots are very, very close together. But if you come during mid-week or in the off-season, as we did, the place is fairly empty, which is great. We had the place to ourselves. Nevertheless, there are too many tent lots and I wouldn't want to be there when it's busy. It isn't particularly quiet even with no other campers: you can hear sound from the nearby roads, farm machinery, lawnmowers, etc. Now for the negative, which is more about the overall experience. We found this place because it was supposedly accessible by bus and we didn't have access to a car. We live in NYC where owning a car is more trouble than it's worth. My friend spoke to the owners beforehand and did the research so I can't speak to what was said, but first of all, the bus did not drop us off at the campsite (some bus drivers will make a stop there, some won't, it's up to chance). We had to hitch a ride to the campground, and to be safe, when we left we called a car to take us to the bus stop in Saugerties. Warning: there is no Uber, Lyft, etc in this area. While it's true that there are many trails and attractions within a few miles of the campground, none of them is accessible on foot unless you feel like walking Route 32 for 4 hours. You MUST have a car. And this is where local car services come in to charge you an arm and a leg, if they even have drivers available at all. Again, I won't name names and I don't know who said what to whom, but my friend believes he was told the cab fare to the nearest trail (4 miles, 15 minute drive) was roughly $10-15, yet the car service asked for $45 each way which is preposterous. That $90 round trip to the trailhead, by itself, would be more than we would have paid to rent a car ourselves for 3 days. So we didn't pay it and didn't get to see the trails at all. Oh, and did I mention many of the car services there close for the night at 6pm? This was all very upsetting for us. Getting to and from camp was more difficult than expected, and once there, we couldn't do anything because we couldn't get anywhere. If we had known this was the deal, we would have rented a car in NYC and driven and had 1000X better time. But I can't fault the owners for that. Lessons learned for next time. I felt it was important to write this review in case other city slickers are considering this place as a car-free option. It's not.

For my husband and me, it was like a lovely cross between a bnb/camping experience, because we were lucky to spend a morning chatting with Wally over his delicious breakfast sandwiches and coffee--but if you want a secluded, private experience, that is easily yours as well at this lovely farm campsite. Instead of feeling like you're all on top of each other with tent site after tent site like at many places, you have an entire verdant hill all to yourself, with nice flat places for tent set-up, a firepit, and chairs. It is quiet, peaceful, and beautiful, and we slept well on our overnight stay. We arrived really late but that was no problem. Dominicans don't do camping. Period! But hubby's a Nuyorican and he loves all this stuff. In a Yurt? Well...That's the question I got when I told folks where I was staying for the weekend. But...it's a give and take and all in the name of love. Right? Caryn & Mark own Awakening Garden grounds. There's a Yurt, 2 Cabins, a Tepee and a Buddha Hut to choose from. (Call or check website for prices). Pitching a tent was definitely out of the question. Now you're asking......what the heck is a Yurt? Well Google says its a, "circular tent"- and that's precisely what it is- but bigger. Our Yurt, has no bathroom- but the 'Bathhouse' is literally 5 steps away (and no...it's not a latrine- by the way). It doubles (or triples) as a small kitchenette with a small fridge, sink and 2-burner hot plate, a full bathroom with a shower, 'Dining Area' and a gorgeous carpeted nook if you want to do Yoga (perfect). Yurt rental for us (at this time of year was $370 ($135 for each of the first two nights and $100 for the third night) plus $30 cleaning fee. It's super comfortable with a Queen-size bed, but there's extra room within the Yurt that could easily sleep at least 2 more people (please double check with the owners first for a payment scale and/or if more people are allowed before you bring your posse). Coming at this time in the Fall was perfect and we didn't need to worry about freezing up here. The Yurt has 2 portable heaters and kept us super toasty for this time of the year. Plus there's a potbelly stove as an added measure. Additionally, there's a baseboard heater in the "Bathhouse". Don't want to pitch a tent? Or do the Hut or cabin stay? But you still want to get that outdoorsy, woodsy feel? Then staying in a Yurt is your best bet to give you a bit of both worlds. Oh by the way...it's just you and Nature at it's finest because there's no TV. And WiFi? If you're lucky- because it comes and goes! Didn't realize how much more I'd appreciate Nature and sleeping in a Yurt made me feel like I was right in the thick of it- which we were. This is totally off the spectrum for me compared to my new fave and up-to-trend hotel- The Emerson- but we wanted to switch things up. I'm really not taking points off because there isn't a TV. Or because we had to walk 5 little steps out of our Yurt and into a Bathhouse. Or because there wasn't a thermostat to regulate the heater. All I kept saying to myself was- 'things could be a lot f*cking worse in the woods'. This Yurt is up to standards and met me in many ways for it being in the woods. 4+1/2! Both Caryn and Mark run Awakening Garden very nicely. It's truly Zen here.
