The house itself is that last remaining piece of the original neighborhood which originally stood outside of city limits. The docent was knowledgeable, welcoming, and gave what felt like an insider's look into the Campbell family highlighting original family belongings. My favorite pieces include a gas lamp that illuminates beautifully (seriously stunning) and massive portait of James A. Campbell with his dogs. Oh -- and the ornate toilet. The snow was coming down before we began our trip. Cindy our driver, and Glenda our concierge, were not only a fantastic team but made even the nervous passengers feel at ease. Glenda came around with candy for everyone and had a little trivia to pass the time for the up'ing travelers. Traffic was so backed up, because of the weather, but Cindy maneuvered around the traffic and got us to the show on time. It was wonderful to be dropped RIGHT at the door. The snow continued while we were at the show. When we came out, she was again Right at the door. How convenient! Especially with all the little "Elsa's" not completely dressed for the weather. We had to wait to start the snowy trek home. There were 3 passengers missing for quite a while, and Glenda went on a hunt for them. She and Cindy were patient and polite to the absent passengers, and Cindy attended to us waiting patiently on the coach. Cindy was an EXCELLENT driver and made everyone feel very safe. The driving conditions with crazy semi's zooming by was nerve wracking, but Cindy handled it with ease. Glenda brought the Frozen DVD to watch on the way home. It was a great distraction for anxious passengers and the tired young uns. When we arrived back, Glenda helped people clean off the 3+ inches of snow mounded on their vehicles. Cindy waited in the coach with passengers while their cars warned up. WOW....these ladies were impressive!!! If I could give 10 stars I would!!!

Our tour this weekend was on the bus which was perfect for the cold and windy night. While the group was large (the bus was full), our driver (Theresa) and tour guide (Julia) were great. We did have an unruly guest during the stop at the Enos Apartment Building, however it was addressed. The most interesting event for us was at the First Unitarian Church when Julia demonstrated a few ghost hunting equipment.

The tour could have been at least an hour shorter, since the stories all started to sound the same, given that we didn't actually see any of the interiors of the buildings where things supposedly took place, with one exception ( a tunnel used for hiding escaped slaves using the Underground Railroad ). This review is for the December nighttime candlelight walk, though my site notes cover any visit…read more Since the county parks department took over this historic village a few years ago, the program has been completely revamped. For the better, I've been told. For the candlelight program Daniel Boone and his wife, as characters, greet visitors and share a bit about their frontier life. Other period characters explain holiday customs, tell stories, or recite whole passages from memory of Dickens' A Christmas Carol or Moore's Nicholas (as 'Twas the Night Before Christmas was originally called). At points in the village visitors become part of the program, such as mummers (traveling beggars) at one house. The entire circular stroll starts and ends in the same spot. It takes about 2-1/2 hours to complete, though the time flies by. Visitor notes: This is not an ADA experience. It would be challenging even with a stroller. The interest level and time commitment might be more appropriate for older teens, young and middle age adults, and healthy seniors. Very much of the tour is outside as you move from building to building. Walkways are uneven rock paths, soft mulch, or wood stairs of varying heights. For the nighttime experience paths and buildings are lit by candlelight and can be somewhat dark. Floors are rock, wood, or dirt. The route would be difficult to travel other than by foot. Also, though cider and cookies are complementary, they're at the entrance/exit. You may want to pack snacks for yourself or little ones because no food is available on the route or allowed in buildings. However, go--if you can--and enjoy a truly unique holiday event.

We took the guided tour ($8 for seniors) and had a phenomenal tour guide. He was a recent graduate with a degree in history. His tour was very informative and he tried hard to dispel some of the myths surrounding Daniel Boone and some misconceptions based on the Festus Parker protrayal of Daniel Boon on TV. He was great. After the guided tour of the house, we did a self guided tour of the historic village. This was well worth the visit.
