This is a great school. My son has attended here since 1st grade. This far he has loved every…read moreteacher. They have a wonderful principle who is very involved with the students. My only issue here is the parking and the pick up. While the staff works hard to move the line, it's just suitable for the amount of students who attend this campus. At times it can take 30 or more minutes to pick up your child after the bell rings. No fault of the staff, but can be pretty troublesome when your child or yourself have any plans or appointments after school.

I am very thankful for Miss Melanie and Miss Martinez. I especially appreciate Miss Martinez, who took the time to work with one of my children on reading even though he was not her student. That kindness and willingness to help meant a great deal to our family. I am also incredibly grateful for the parents in this community who reached out to us directly after we left. Some offered prayers, some sent encouraging messages, and some simply checked on our family without asking questions or participating in rumors. Unfortunately, my son later heard from other students that he had been "expelled." That is not true. We made the decision to withdraw our children from the school. I deeply appreciate the parents who chose compassion and direct communication rather than speculation. There were good people here, which made our decision to leave even more challenging . Over time, we repeatedly raised concerns about comments, teasing, and interactions involving our children, particularly during less-structured times such as lunch, recess, and PE. From our perspective, there was not enough accountability or effective intervention to stop the pattern. We eventually lost confidence that our concerns were being addressed appropriately. There were also interactions with adults that we found especially troubling. One incident involved a PE teacher asking our son, "Are you a boy or a girl?" We considered that humiliating and completely inappropriate for an educator to say to a child. We also had significant concerns regarding our experiences with Miss Warner and Miss Lisa. In our experience, some interactions with our son and with us as parents felt dismissive, unnecessarily confrontational, and at times embarrassing for our child rather than supportive or corrective. We communicated concerns about these interactions to the school. Our concerns were not limited to this school year. In a previous year, we also had a troubling interaction involving Miss Evans. During a conversation regarding our son, I distinctly remember her referring to him as "lazy." When I later addressed the comment, she maintained that I had been the one who used that word. I strongly disagreed then and still do. I would not describe my son that way. Regardless of that disagreement, the interaction left me feeling that my concern about how my child had been characterized was being dismissed rather than acknowledged. We also previously raised a concern after our son reported an issue and was subsequently referred to as a "snitch." Experiences like these mattered to us because children should feel safe reporting problems to adults without being embarrassed or discouraged from speaking up. We also raised concerns regarding Miss Bartolome and interactions our son witnessed involving the way students were spoken to and corrected. Taken individually, someone might view some of these incidents as minor. For our family, however, they became part of a larger pattern that developed over several years. What became most difficult was the overall lack of accountability we experienced when we tried to address these issues. We were not expecting our children to never be corrected or disciplined. We absolutely believe children should be held accountable for their own behavior. What we expected was fairness, appropriate adult conduct, meaningful intervention. After multiple incidents and repeated attempts to communicate our concerns, we decided withdrawing our children was the best choice for our family. This was not a decision based on one teacher, one disagreement, or one isolated incident. It was the accumulation of experiences over time . I am sharing our experience because parents considering this school deserve to hear both the positive and negative aspects of our experience. Our experience with repeated peer issues, adult interactions with our children, and the administration's handling of our concerns ultimately outweighed the positive experiences and led us to leave.

Whoever planned the 2024 5th grade promotion should be terminated and never be tasked with a project that requires basic thinking or logic! There have been many changes over the years, but it has still managed to keep its community spirit. Due to budget cuts class sizes have gone up since he started here. They do a pretty good job though. I think it helps that it's a smaller campus. One thing I think they've done really well with is the Learning Center. Joe Malek does a tremendous job running it. He is so energetic and positive. Every school would be lucky to have a teacher like him. Maryland Ave has some really great support staff on campus. I think a lot of times people remember the teachers and might forget about all these other wonderful folks who make a huge difference in our children's lives everyday. I know early on I realized this because they ALL knew who my son was within the first few days of school. And it wasn't because he was a problem child, it was because they cared and made a point to get to know him even though he was very shy.

Our teachers thus far have been caring, knowledgeable, and dependable. While the school has gone through a few changes over the years, the sparrow community continues to hold together for the kids with help of parents and staff alike. The most important thing is my children are HAPPY at sparrow. They have made true friendships, they know all the staff on a first name basis, and are learning to love learning. Waldorf education is a different kind of educational pathway, however at sparrow all concepts that are seen in public school are still met at sparrow bcuz they are a charter and state funded. They just teach it in a different way. They are not perfect and it's an uphill battle to keep this charter school functioning as a Waldorf since we still have to meet state testing, but the village it provides makes it worth while. Those looking into Waldorf education private or charter, should really work to understand what, how and why, waldorf curriculum is taught.

The staff truly pour into the children and you can tell there's such an amazing blend of care with education. They provide a classroom setting and an entire curriculum. The program is geared to prepare children for elementary school. There's a spacious play area for the children and the preschool is gated providing safety and peace of mind. My son came from a faith based daycare so having him in a preschool that was faith based was also very important to me. I plan to have him here until he graduates out at 5 years old. The school has not only cared for my son, but also for me. The welcoming nature is so special and I've felt such a warm embrace by not only staff but by parents too. La Teresa is an incredible director who leads a loving and brilliant staff. My son is learning, growing and thriving here and I am so grateful to LCPC for supporting and navigating this important stage in his life.
