Looking for something to do while passing through southern Oklahoma? We were staying at Lake…read moreMurray and decided to check out the Greater Southwest Historical Museum. We were certainly glad we spent several hours there. We've visited lots of "local" museums but this one gets the grand prize. Located in a former national guard armory, they have thousands of feet for displays and they've utilized all of it. They've moved settlement log homes inside, after disassembling and documenting each part so they could be reassembled perfectly. The whole museum is a collection that shows how people in the area lived in years gone by. A doctor, a bank, a school, a drug store soda stand, a blacksmith shop... the list goes on and on. They have extensive coverage of the oil and agricultural industries, which played a very important part in the local economy. The docents were very friendly and answered all of our questions about the exhibits. We also listened to some funny stories, too. Be sure to visit the Military History Museum while you're here. It's located in the same building and it's very interesting. Both museums are free to enjoy, but be sure to leave a nice donation for each one to help keep them going.

This is our first visit to Southern Oklahoma Speedway. We were staying at Lake Murray and saw that…read morethere was a racing event tonight. From their website, we found enough information to spark our interest. They have an oval shaped, semi banked clay track that is of a mile. We've enjoyed dirt track racing (years ago), so we decided to go. The website showed this event... ALL STAR SHOOTOUT iStock, Southern Sport Mods, IMCA Modified The 3 classes of race cars are unknown to us, but we were undeterred. The cost was $20 (or $15 for seniors or kids). Reasonable. We had a great, 4 hours of high octane fun. There were many heats in each class of car that resulted in 3 final races to determine the champions. Lots of thrills all evening. It was nice that we were allowed to bring our own coolers with adult beverages. I assumed that it was because they don't have a license. Sure enough, the concessions area didn't sell beer. So, if you like it, you better bring it. The concessions area did have a nice selection of burgers, nachos, frito pie, etc. and soft drinks. All are very reasonably priced.

You sit on metal bleachers but they have a railing and feel very solid to walk and sit on. The track is dirt and expect to breath in so.e dust as cars race around. The night that we went the races went from 7 till after 11. They have a snack area with soda. No beer but they do allow you to bring in beer and drinks and food which almost everyone seemed to be doing. Can't wait to go again
