Wassailfest is the largest hot cider based festival in Central Texas. For the out-of-towner, wassail is a German spiced alcoholic cider based drink that's much like hot wine, or gluhwine. It's heavily spiced with mulling herbs and spices, such as cinnamon, cloves, allspice, or orange peel. Local businesses gather around Main Square in New Braunfels, serve up some hot wassail and sing Christmas carols, have a German Santa, and promote German Christmas traditions. There are some strange German Christmas traditions that didn't make it into American traditions, so it's cool to see the differences. Normally, Santa gives bad children coal, but in the wassail tradition, they get put into a sack and beaten with sticks by an anti-Santa named Belsnickel, or a Krampus eats them. Wassailfest is a good place to go holiday gift shopping, as they have lots of local crafters who make candles, Christmas ornaments, knittings, and other kitschy stuff to hang up around your home, especially for Christmas. The Main Square gets all lit up for Christmas with a holiday light display. The local businesses compete for who makes the best wassail, and it's a good opportunity to find out about all the local businesses around here.
