I've been a customer of Rick's Gate Works for years, but after this experience, I won't be using them again--and I wouldn't recommend them to others. I recently had a wireless keypad installed, which took about 30 minutes. The invoice came to $368, far exceeding what I expected for such a short visit and a $49 part. I was charged $125 for that $49 part, which is a significant markup. When I asked for a breakdown or an explanation, I received little clarity and was told, "That's just how we charge." For context, I was informed their standard rate for 30 minutes is $205. Since their emergency rate is $250, this charge felt excessive and difficult to justify. Compounding the issue, the invoice listed the wrong town and address. This created unnecessary confusion and delays and, frankly, made me question whether I was even being billed correctly. Overall, the lack of transparency, questionable pricing, and basic administrative errors made this a very frustrating experience. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere if you value clear communication, accurate billing, and professionalism. read more

We called on a weekend because our cars were stuck in our garage due to a broken spring. The technician related that there would be a 250.00 after hours charge and we agreed given the circumstances. Although they indicated that they were approximately 35 minutes away, they arrived almost two hours later. The service tech indicated that he could not fix the springs and then, in less than 10 minutes with the help of the homeowner, put three shivs of wood under the door and the door was opened. They then attempted to upsell a new opener and left. A week later we received a bill for over 650.00 for the 10 minute service call. Attempts to resolve with the business were not successful. We had been using Rick's for years and never had such an experience. PLEASE BE CAREFUL with the billing practices that are happening there. This charge is so inappropriate and without any further recourse, I can only share our experience with the hope that other homeowners will call another service (or ask a neighbor for three pieces of wood to put under the door and lift it with help and save 650.00). As an estimate manager providing services for mostly UHNW clients who have multiple gates often with tightened security, it's imperative to work with a vendor who is professional and on their game. I feel like I had that experience with Rick's Gates and then some. I had to have some keypads on 2 different gates changed for security purposes. When I called and expressed the urgency, I was able to get an appointment the next day. I worked with both Niko and Brett on 2 different occasions and they were both excellent. One of the keypads was on the older side and it was complicated. Brett really went above and beyond to troubleshoot the issue and was happily able to find a solution in a timely manner. Their prices are fair and reasonable and their response times are excellent. I have worked with a number of gate vendors over the years and I'm very pleased to be working with them. Rick's Gatework recently replaced our sliding gate motor, Allomatic SL 150DC. They were able to install the motor within a few days of the approval. Ramon who was the installer was fast, super knowledgeable and did a great job. His helper Jose also did a great job. We did have some things that had to be tweaked since the gate goes slightly uphill and with no delay, David at Rick's Gatework sent out their techs to take care of the adjustments. They did an excellent job, super responsive and professional. I feel super comfortable since they have been in business for so long and have so many people working for them, they will always be there when we need them. Reliability and responsiveness is super important when you have a gate that needs to open or be serviced at a certain time and teh confidence that when yo udo need the warranty, they will be there and honor it. I had three estimates. The first two estimates both said the motor would need to be replaced for $4500 which didn't make any sense because the motor seemed to work fine. It was just wouldn't close all the way. Rick's friendly tech actually took the the time to investigate and found it to be a small computer chip box that triggered the sensor. Total cost to replace that box with labor: $400. Highly recommend. read more

I am the president of the HOA Board at our condo building and I would like to share with you a very positive experience. We had a gate that was not working periodically. When we had other technicians out, they couldn't find the problem. Ramon, who is great, was sent to us to fix our garage gate and he told us that we should NOT stop and start the gate when it's acting up again since it destroys the information that can be pulled from the mechanisms. A few days later, the gate wasn't working again and he came out and was able to diagnose the problem. We needed a new motor. He came the following day and was able to change out the motor. Rick's Gate Works is one such business - They are experts, let me repeat that one - EXPERTS, and dependable, honest, with service-oriented personalities. For over 12yrs I managed an apt building in N. Hollywood with two garage gates - a pull-up overhead one, and a side-to-side gate. Rick's Gate techs are just the best. Whether it was a midnight emergency call, or a day time svc appt, they could be counted on to arrive in the time window given, and most importantly -- they knew how to fix any and every problem we had with those gates. From new parts, service to existing parts, remote control issues, motors, springs, or just the mounts... anything having to do with the proper operation of those gates, they took care of. What a relief for me with my really busy schedule at that building! Rick's Gate Works......Be Extremely Careful and if you have used them....Be aware of below, especially if you have children or pets!!! They Keep your gate codes and frequencies and use them without you knowing or your permission!! As a brief background we used Rick's gate works to fix our gate which was working fine but the sensor to make sure it doesn't close on a vehicle stopped working. They replaced the sensor and it stopped working again a number of months later but outside of the 30 day window. They charged me a visit charge which was extreme and "fixed" the sensor again. Almost a year later that same sensor broke for a third time. I called to tell them and was yet again met with even more poor customer service than usual. Their technician David Starr came out and said it was likely one of two things and he didn't have the parts but would go get them and we can schedule a time to have the gate repaired once he has the correct parts. Keep in mind that the gate was working the entire time, just the sensor was broken. This is where it gets scary and please beware. A few weeks later I received an $850 bill for a new Motherboard and $250 of that was labor. I never approved them coming over and I have cameras all over my property and there was no video supporting they ever came out on any of the dates they claimed the work was done on. When I asked again for clarification when the work done, they gave me 3 different dates it "could have been done on." I have videos and timelapses of those entire days and no one ever came to work on my gates. I called them and told them that I have no intention on paying for work that was never authorized and no sign that the work was even done. On December 21 someone from Ricks Gate Works came to my house. When my children who were home alone didn't answer the doorbell from the gate, they used either some sort of master remote code from their car or used a remote they programmed with our gate frequency from a past service call and illegally let themselves in to my property. They then rendered my gate inoperable, left it cracked open so they could get out and drove away. I have videos to support this entire scary saga and please view the enclosed screenshots as well. It is so scary as a mother to know the technician came to the house with functional and closed gate, illegally letting himself in with either a master remote or a stored frequency, used a master key to open the box outside. He then rendered the gate useless, leaving it open enough to get out and driving away with the gate broken and left cracked open which could have been a disaster if the dogs got out. When I found out about what happened I called the office and the owner, told me to go F myself and I was crazy and to never call him back. I called Santa Monica Police and they came over to take a report as well. In addition, my husband called the next day to discuss it with him. He told him that I was crazy, he should go F himself as well and if we put a negative review online he would refute it and although he has never met or spoken to my husband he would say he was a child molester in rebuttal to any negative reviews. I implore you.........PLEASE BE CAREFUL with this company and rest assured if you use them or have used them in the past.........they have kept your gate and remote frequencies and have access to your house and your family.... read more

The lady I spoke with (on 2 separate occasions) is absolutely horrible and detrimental to the business. Customer loyalty of many years means nothing. She just didn't care. Needed gate repair and an extension, was asked to email them with pictures, and did same day and received no reply from them whatsoever. When I called a week later, again no response to the follow up, nobody took action to rectify. When I called again the following week, same response. I am not at all valued as their previous client clearly. My family and I are truly disappointed. read more

Been using Rick's Gate Works for many years. The last time was a repair of a custom wrought iron gate with a special picket designed years ago. The gate was hurt by vandals but fortunately Rick's guys came out and restored the pattern to its original splendor.
