I'm a UM alum so I'm biased - the Richter library has many fond (and less fond) memories for me as a student. The standout here is the Cuban Heritage collection, which is open to the public and has an amazing collection of lots of artifacts from Cuban history. Everything from the original daiquiri recipe to copies of ration cards. The collection also partners with the Freedom Tower. A wonderful resource for the community. read more

Lots of mixed feelings about this place. Plenty of computers and floor space but oddly not enough tables and chairs. The study rooms are like freezers but midday on the second floor is an oven. Plenty of printers but the wifi is spotty. Recently the management changed study room policy greatly limiting the flexibility of group work- resulting in mostly empty rooms as opposed to the constant battle for them. The stacks are quiet but have terrible ambience and even more terrible internet connectivity. It can get a bit creepy at night as desperate study spot vultures circle the shelves behind you. Accidentally taking the elevator down to the M level is also reminiscent of a potential horror movie scenario with its locked cage gates and dimly lit narrow aisles. Nonetheless, the place is open 24/7 during finals and is a reliable place to surround yourself with people doing mildly academic things. You'll at least feel a little less guilty about not studying after sitting here for half the day. Try the music library or the law library for a better library experience. If you're just here to get books, Richter is just as good as any other. At the end of the day, Richter is a University Library which could be a lot worse and has a fair number of amenities, and at least- does it's job passably. I'm at Richter more often now then when I was paying for tuition. Go figure. Alumni get full access to Library, and borrowing privileges are available for an annual $50 fee. Can I count that towards my loan payments? Visitors can access by stopping by front desk and filling out a quick info sheet (I think there is also a fee). Grab a book and pass out in the Lawn by the tower. Still fun. Check with the Alumni Association to get your Alumni Cane Card. read more

It only seems appropriate to write this review while lounging in one of the library's comfy chairs, successfully procrastinating all the work that I have to do. Thankfully, Richter has provided a peaceful and productive place to get studying done for the past four years. From the more social first floor to the multiple levels of creepily quiet stacks, you can pick the perfect spot based on how serious you really want to be. As long as the printers aren't down, staplers fully stocked, and Starbucks open for business, Richter is the perfect escape from the tempting Miami sunshine when you just can't avoid doing work any longer. I study at Richter about two to three times a week. It has friendly and knowledgable librarians, quietly study areas, loud study areas, study rooms, and graduate student study areas. The librarians and staff are very friendly and always willing to help. They have been very responsive to my questions, both in person and through email or chat. They have even held helpful workshops a few times this year about research related topics (e.g., searching databases, research software, cloud-based storage, publication strategies, etc.). The graduate student and quiet study areas are located on the second floor, and they are great places to study if you need complete silence. The first floor study area, however, is typically very loud. I usually wear earplugs, so I don't mind. There are group study rooms on both floors that you can reserve through the library website in 30 minute blocks, with a maximum of 2.5 or 3 hours (I think). I have been able to successfully reserve a room as long as I do it at least a day in advance. Be warned, however, that being more than 15 minutes late will forefeit your reservation. I found this out the hard way. There are usually students who study in these rooms without a reservation, but as long as you say you booked it they are polite about leaving. If you plan on studying here with a group, I highly recommend reserving a study room. Otherwise you will find yourself struggling to find a table that will accommodate your group on the first floor. read more

It's no secret that I'm a library loving girl. Free wireless at Richter, now that's a little known fact. Hands down the best library in Miami is Richter but unless you're part of the UM family you'll be coughing up some cash to enter. No worries though, daily access begins at $5 and you can always sign up for an annual membership. I'd been here often but it wasn't until recently that I found that you can have access to free wireless. Hark I hear a choir of angels shouting out Hallelujah http://bit.ly/yIVuR No more need to worry about my air card signal. Now, to figure out free or at least cheap parking... I am now a frequent visitor to this library. I'm only giving it 4 stars because it can be a little noisy & I think it makes it hard to focus. However, if you are part of UM you get: -tons of computers to use -$100 worth of free printing/scanning/copying on your CaneID -You can request books/articles on-line and the library staff will retrieve it for you, they email you when it's ready & you can pick it up at the circulation desk -they will email you PDF articles that they don't have if you request it -they have subject librarians for most specialties that will help you if you're stuck -you can access the library remotely -Starbucks is across the sidewalk -open long hours read more

I love the library, especially because I am a Grad student and can get a free graduate study room fir myslef. They have great study places and starbucks is just on the opposite side. The problem is that the group study rooms are always booked out especially druing exam period. And if you forget to give back the card from a grad study room it gets really expensive. Also if you want super quiet and away from people in the middle of the books just go to the 3rd - 8th floor. There are tables on the sides. they have an amazing stack of books and printers all over 1st and 2nd floor. They also have staples and clips downstairs. I just dont like the new system they are running on since this summer. It is not user friendly and even the staff is just learning how to work with it. It gets annoying with time. I love coming here. This place just makes me want to study. read more

It's my University's main library so I'm always there. It has a college environment vibe to it, but main place for me to be productive. When the 1st floor gets too noisy and the 2nd floor is packed head up to the stacks tower. Stacks is quiet and has room for individual study. Their CHC (Cuban Heritage Collection) is filled with valuable research material from the island of Cuba. The University Archives on the 8th floor has cool UM memorabilia. The Digital Collection has a lot of materials as well. Items from the library's archival departments are usually always on display. Private library, however $5 gets you in as a guest. This place is enormous. During finals they stay open 24/7, thank goodness, and you can get help on pretty much anything. The best part of Richter, other than the study rooms, the computers, the nearly infinite books, the peace and quiet, and the gorgeous views, is that if there is anything you need that they don't have, then the library staff can help you find it somewhere else and get it sent to you. Need a primary source for a paper but it hasn't been printed since 1800? Boom. They can get that. Absolutely fabulous! read more

I love coming here to study! The graduate student section on the 2nd floor is absolutely amazing and very necessary with all the studying there is to do! It's on a first come, first serve basis for the room keys but if there aren't any available, there are little private tables where you can sit and look out on the lake. Very relaxing when you have papers due and a whole lot of reading due as well! The staff at the Richter have always been very nice and quite helpful leading me where I need to go for resources and such for research papers. Not everyone can get into the Richter, but if you're lucky enough to have access to it, I highly suggest you use it! read more

Richter library is by far the best library in Miami! I love coming to study here and the atmosphere is fantastic. To start off there is outdoor seating outside the library. What is even better is the convenience of a Starbucks directly opposite of the library entrance. This makes the outdoor seating a very popular hang out spot for students and teachers. Recently UM has renovated the second floor of the library and has included grad student study rooms. These rooms are on a first come first serve basis and are extremely private. Each private room is meant only for one person and is equipped with a desk a single chair and a power station. My personal favorite aspect of Richter library is the multitude of computers available for use. Whether it be for just simply writing a paper, or graphic designing. At the Richter library you have access to both PCs and Macs. Also what is great is that if you ever forget a charger or headphones for music, the front desk always has reserves that can be checked out and used immediately. read more
